The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Just looking through some old CD's and I was looking at the video of the Alien War PR's being made. Is there any good pictures of the finished PR's?

I know it was said that they had a pretty high attrition rate and they were being constantly rebuilt, but do any still exist?

Cheers

Tony

I've probably got some images somewhere Tony but I'll have to dig them out.

Stay tuned!

Here are some screen caps from my documentary featuring the PR's. Don't know if these are any help but happy to post them.

Lol. Those must have been from later in the run, no? The Beyond 2000 video showed them in all their (close to) movie style glory, complete with more accurate shrouds.

Okay, here's another related question: what were the shrouds made from when the soundfire rifles were made initially? Vaccuform weren't they?

*Edit* I found a pic somone shared of one of the later versions in my archives...

Yeah, the one's in Darren's photos above are the later versions.

The original AW/PR shrouds were vacuum formed plastic. I have a video of them during construction somewhere, I'll try to find it and upload it to YouTube or somewhere in the next few days.

In the meantime here are some video grabs of it:

And here's one of Armourerdoug with one of the PRs:

Thanks guys for the input.
Harry, the video I have you sent on a CD of stuff a while back, it shows them being made and they also compare the under-construction items to what looks to be a real PR, painted overall black.
The grenade launchers were vac-formed in black plastic off the original GL and the shrouds seem to be straight pulls off the screen used PR shrouds, so overall the first run must have had some degree of accuracy.

Just interested to see a clearer view of what they made, being that they have a certain direct heritage from the movie prop.

Cheers

Looks like the later versions used the same machined metal "core" but they simply replaced the screen accurate shrouds and GL with the later overall version...... :P
And those caps are from the video you sent me Harry, cheers.

Cheers

ok lads
First used soundfire pulserifles were vac formed abs over one of the rifles used for alien 3, the one i am holding in that hillarious old pic of me is one from alien 3! ours were OD shrouds not black, but as the days went on and we only ever had 10 of them to start with (built by Bapty and co,,who made the real rifles for Aliens) they got smashed and the abs was susceptable to the smoke fluid oil we used for Atmos, and it all began to crack and split (as did the body armour, but to a lesser extent) the grip/lower reciever section were of cast aluminium (think i have one somewhere)
the horrible "10 ton" steel replacements lasted much better and there were i think 6 still opperation when Alien War closed in 1995, hope this helps

You sure about that Doug? In that photo I noticed that what looks to be the SoundFire strobe is protruding past where the end of the barrel should be.

No worries Doug, I know you're getting on a bit - hee hee! ;)

I found a larger & much clearer version of that photo plus a new one of one of the original version Sound-Fire rifles.

How did the shrouds get broken so often? Was it just from bashing them around, handling mistakes or just generally from the plastic being weak?

I wonder if anyone still has plans/schematics for those rifles anywhere. Be kind of fun to remake an Alien War rifle with the strobe in the end and all that. :)

Also, the pistol grip and at least part of the upper receiver looks like a solid
(clamshell) piece. Any info on that? Were they machined or cast metal?

Russ, earlier in the above mentioned video that Harry screencapped from there is a quick shot of four or five of the grip frame/reciever/barrel assemblies stacked in a row. They look to be all one big assembly, even the barrel vents and barrel are an integral part of it.

We are thinking alike as I too would think a replica of the first AW PR would be a fun thing. They certainly looked pretty good through using shrouds vac-formed right off an A3 PR as well as the one piece GL sssembly.

Thanks for the further input Harry and Doug.

Cheers

Tony

OK, the receiver top and grip sections were cast ally, the barrel and under brace were steel. The outer shrouds were 2 sides of vac-form ABS as was the spas cage/grip. Where the mag should be had a ni-cad battery (charged over night). I do have a strobe tip at home somewhere too! the soundfire board was inside the spas cage, designed and built by John Fisher and Mark from fisher products (they worked on the motion trackers for Aliens).

They broke for all the reasons listed as well as electronic probs too.

Does Fisher Products still exist as a company?

When you say the "soundfire board" you mean an electronic PCB that relays when the weapon is fired, correct?
The speakers themselves were mounted in the background of the setting weren't they?

Thanks for the info, this is all very interesting to me!

You wouldn't happen to know where the APC is do you? :)

Yep PCB. No idea about John Fisher, I last saw him on "Golden Eye".

The speakers were specials made for AW by Kenwood and hidden in the walls by the 3 "shooting" areas, we had to turn them down as they were louder than blank firing pistols, shook your guts! hee hee!

Which APC the real one? No idea any more; Harry may know?

The 12" radio model I haven't heard of in years, but the one we had that was the close up model for the interior of the atmosphere processor corridors was with a guy called Nick Harrison from 1995, he passed away some years ago so lost track of it,,,but am working with Nigel Brackley who made the Jorden tractor and was involved with the APC and Drop Ship models 8)
He also made K-9 for DR Who! hee hee!
