The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hey There!
Maybe you wrote it already somewhere and I didn´t find, but can anybody tell how the cup Newt and Ripley drinking out is called, or whom it was manufactured by?

Greetings

Kai

I all the years I've been here, I don't believe I've ever seen this question asked.
Just when you thought all (or nearly all) of the props have been disscussed, somehing new comes along.

My guess is that with the tapered (white) rim, the cup is some sort of thermal/ insulated mug.
This, combined with the little thumb support/ handle, it may even be a top cap to an older style Thermos bottle.

* Now that I think about it (I'd have to watch the scene again)
does Ripley pour the hot chocolate from another container, or is it already in her hands?

I think we are looking at two cups.

The newt cup is really small (seen in Ripley's hands).

The ripley cup (from "you'll take care of it hicks" scene) is large

and shaped differently.

I think the larger cup is part of the thermos that is sitting on

her sink back at gateway station.

Any thoughts? Screen grab guys?

I'm into collecting mid century Eames type stuff.

Very interesting! Didn´t notice the differences in the cup size! (Seems to be a generall Ice-problem...). Yes, we´re getting closer!
Have a look at my cup:

Is your cup one of those coffee cups from Solo that have the disposable plastic inserts (the white part) and a skeletal cup (the dark part)?

No, it is just a black plastic body with a white insert, not disposable. It is very thin, so I do not really think it has any thermal funktion. Unfortunately, I got it from a friend and he can´t tell, where he got it.

I could swear I had one of those as a kid, but was blue and white. It was part of a thermos set. If my parents weren't so far away, I'd go look in the old stuff to see if by remote chance it was around anymore.

I remember having it in my lunch box for school.

yeah, that is meant to be disposable. Most church kitchens had those around, and a dispenser where you pulled out a new insert. I bet you could find a ton at the Goodwill, but good luck finding the inserts anymore. They are so mid-century modern!

Cool!
That's a really close one, but the handle looks off.
RPC Tedeco-Gizeh produces a similar one (have a look at No. 025):

However, the handle is off too.

Cheers,
Stefan

Maybe an older model?

I always thought it was part of a thermos in her room at gateway..

Just been watching the film In Bruges for the umpteenth time and noticed the cup a Dutch girl was using in the film:

Image

It's from the catering area of a film that's part of the plot of In Bruges. (rather than the catering area of In Bruges, if you see what I mean?)

Looks like the same type as Newt used, so they must still be made. 8)

Nice seen, Steve.
Perhaps someone living in Holland can check out the local dealers. On the other hand it seems to be a cateringservice from England. I´ve never seen these cups in Germany at all. There are some close finds, but- you know!
We are getting closer- the Legacy is everywhere. Good work guys!
By the way:
Happy 2009 to everybody out there!

LOL this is not true are you guys hunting those??? Had hundreds of them back in the 80 & 90s both from coffe machines and bought in like towers/tubes of 50 apiece. Never ever dropped a thought on that they where in Aliens. Im going to check the malls and see if they are still around.
I mean the white plastic rimmed ones has been around for 30 years + and are still here so the other type should hopefully be around too.
