The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hey buddy, who is it in the title (of the film and this forum)?

Please remember that this forum is for the discussion of the whole of the Alien series of films, and not just a few specific characters in the 2nd movie.

Everyone has their interests but it has been said before: It's all about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Oh I agree, hence why we don't go out of our way to exclude them.

I feel sorry for anyone who wears rubbery type costumes (but I live in the South and I think of sweating and heat exhaustion and personal well being).

Indeed, colony sweeps would be quite boring without someone to "find".

Us and them? In the UKCM, it's all a big cross-species love fest. (Figuratively speaking, of course!! ;) )

Pug do you know that here in the US that "Us and Them" is getting actually quite bad? Heck we're having 2 members of the same political party about to take chainsaws to each other over it.

I don't mean it like that.

I have no idea what you mean by the concept of "us and them" in American politics.

I was joking 100% and didn't mean to make any political point.

(Oh, and I said "figuratively speaking" but come to think of it, UKCM members have been known to share beds while in costume lol)

Thank God you have no idea... Currently if you're not voting for Hillary Clinton you are "anti-woman", if you're not voting for Barrack Obama you are "anti-black".

Us vs Them.... bad very bad.

But OT again. Yes we are a diverse group of people: Aliens, Marines, a few Preds, and the rest such as pure costumers and prop collectors.

Wait, we're supposed to FIND the bug during the Colony Sweep?

Well, I guess there's a chance he'll be hiding in the bar area, maybe even at the bottom of one of my drinks, so just in case....

:)

If I'm not careful, my Alien will end up passed out with his face in a beer glass. hehe (Yes, don't worry people, I know all about keeping hydrated. I can drink 2 litres of water an hour at peak)

It's ConSluts, and only if they bring women. And he'd probably have to leave the tail at home. Cramped quarters and all.

It's very slender. It would fit up the tightest of skirts. ;)

I could tell you stories about where the tail, fingers and inner mouth of my bug suit have ended up over the years. Some women have a very strange fetish about Aliens. And I love them for it.

OoohRaa Asskicking Marine offensive?

Not wanting to chase anyone away but... if you're not a Marine (in costume I mean) then what the hell are you?

I understand that we do have some Bugs, but some of them don't mind being Marines also. Even if they don't, then they are still welcome and we don't go out of our way to exclude them.

If we had more "techy" types like some Weyland-Yutani reps or such then I would understand the reasoning behind that statement.

John I’m not saying its offensive per se, I’m just saying some people just don’t do that ( I guess that’s one of those cultural things I was talking about) and it can put people off if they don’t ‘get it’

I think maybe you missed my point this forum wasn’t originally set up as a costuming forum. It was set up to discuss the movies. There are a whole bunch of people here that don’t costume at all. In fact I think you’ll find a majority of members don’t.

I’m just trying to explain why I think some people are either visiting less often or leaving all together.

Well I (and I'm sure most of us Americans) wouldn't get it if there was a similar movie based on British military stuff.

And... Maybe it's just something that's evolved? Not trying to make excuses, but I've only known AL as a costuming site. I certainly have no problems with folk who want to work on their own projects or talk about whatever they wish.

My recollections of the board in its original incarnation as part of the Aliens Archive, are that it was very heavily based on discussion of props and costumes as seen in the movies.

As Spat pointed out, these areas have been discussed to death, and Marine costuming groups have increased in popularity. I think there is possibly a cultural difference in that costuming is really not that prevalent in the UK. Having said that, the UK Marine costumers have pretty much wiped the floor with other movie franchise costumers at the UK cons I've been to :)

Which is funny to me seeing as I've always though the Tech Manual to be very UK, the UK had the Aliens thing at the Trocadero, and the movie was filmed there... so while they were indeed "Americans", it has that UK feeling to me.

And while I do agree that Marines costuming groups have grown in popularity, I really don't see the groups as that separate excepting the physical locations of the members.

Remember that at UK Cons, less than 5% of people are in costume.

I think costuming is less common in the UK mainly because we Brits are, on the whole, rather shy. And I'm one of the shyest people in Britain ...

That would be a major culture shock to me. Dragon*con tends to be 5% people not in costume.

Also another factor for us Americans is... Marines seem to be a high military ideal. Yes, I give respect to the different branches of the Armed Forces. But Marines! Wow! We have commercials on TV to recruit, and the Marine ones look the coolest. Yeah Navy has big boats and technology. Air Force has jets zipping around. But Marine commercial have Dress Blues plus they look so... Damn Cool!

Even though I'm not real world military, the Marines were one thing I'm Gung Ho (pun intended) for. When I was a kid, Gung Ho and Leatherneck were 2 of my favorite GI Joes. I collected all the Marines from the old Starcom toys...

It really is just a cultural thing for us I believe.

I've been here long enough to have watched the board evolve. I was around when it was Aliens Archive run by Dan.

I know where Kevin is coming from as it truly has gone from being a prop/film discussion board- to a costuming group as a whole (as far as the majority of post topics). Both the North American and United Kingdom groups grew in leaps and bounds over the last five years. The most in the last two.

For me calling myself a Colonial Marine is a metaphor- it is a symbol of the friendship I share on this board. Talk of "Brotherhood", "Marines have each other's backs", etc... It's all about reinforcing the tight knit group we have created here.

Not everyone dresses as a Marine- I truly appreciate that and have the utmost admiration for those who have put together a Xenomorph. Not everyone here costumes, I appreciate and respect that as well. All are welcome.

And honestly I had no idea this was creating as much friction as it clearly has. Unfortunately it was never discussed as it happened- and basically has been allowed to fester.

When I say hi to a new person with "Welcome aboard Marine"... it never really occured to me that someone might get the feeling they were just drafted so to speak.

However I do agree that the majority of canon topics have been discussed at length already. Just as Spat said- we need another movie. A good one (personally with Marines fightin' Aliens in the future  ).
