The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Profiler wasn't talking about doing the Charlies, but rather Gorman's grand OD combat bdus as he cowered in the APC.

My concept for that impression, if I end up going that direction, is a LT that isn't as green as Gorman. I seem to think that an LT who either started as a grunt or had a few missions under their belt that were not simulated. Would be a bit less of a jerk, since they would know how things are for the grunts. I have looked at doing the uniform as an out of armor grunt uniform. Reason I was leaning more toward doing a LT is the folks looking at us in our gear might be more accepting of a LT in that uniform. Over someone with lower ranks on their uniform.

I’m looking into the smart gunner on a budget. Thank you for posting the pictures and specs Ripstick.

It all depends on how the search of surplus stores goes on Friday.

And for Outcry27 and all others interested, here are the dimensions of the template I used for the smartgunner chestplate:

Click on the image above to view a larger image (1.8Mb). ;)

Jesse gave me these dimensions which I believe came from his chestplate -- although I thought they translated a little on the small side. Unfortunately Jesse couldn't make it to DragonCon last year so I couldn't do a side-by-side comparison. :(

One final note... I had used double-corrugated cardboard from an old HP computer monitor shipping box. ;)

I want to have your children. XD

And oh man... how funny would it be if someone went to the con wearing the O.D. bdus and bandages all over their head?

It would be accurate. Image

What are the measurements written down for the armor? Can't tell.

If you click on the pic above and then once it has loaded fully expand it to it's full size, then the measurements are clearly visible :)

Another idea you could try - android. I have yet to see one on this board, should be pretty easy if you can get a navy blue jumpsuit and the patches.

Hi all, new to these boards, but been lurking the UACM ones for a while...

I am currently looking into making a synthetic, but info is hard to come by on the web. Anyone could point me in the right direction?

Try giving http://www.sportsmansguide.com a look-over. The often have jumpsuits in different colors at a pretty good price.

After that all you would need are the patches. You could go the extra mile and get the correct shoes, but they are far from cheap, and not very easy to find. After that, you could accessorize with a flashlight, laptop or clipboard with maybe some facehugger specs on it.

That's the beauty of being a synthetic - canon on that one is pretty loose. All you really need is some kind of jumpsuit, similar to the one Bishop wore in the movie, and maybe some Weyland-Yutani patches to put on it. ...And then spend all day with a dry sense of humor and a penchant for being over-polite. Oh, and if you REALLY want to take it to the next level, drink nothing but milk the entire time you're at the con.

Motion trackers, medic packs, or other scientific equipment make good props for synthetics, but you won't see one carrying weapons. Here's a clip from the Tech Manual:

"In recent years increasing numbers of synthetic humans have been deployed with Colonial Marine line units. Though the Geneva Conventions prohibits the equipping of androids with weapons or uninhibited combat abilities, the Colonial Marine Corps regards them as an invaluable resource, supporting front line units as multi-role team-members and mobile databases. Marine androids are always employed in a non-combatant role, usually as drivers, pilots, medics and scientific advisers to combat units at the platoon level and above."

I already have a few royal blue flightsuits that I was thinking to convert, and a bunch of UACM patches.

I'll be looking for weyland-yutani patches to put on it.

In addition, I was thinking of making a large Weyland-Yutani suitcase. Maybe at some point a motion tracker (I love this prop).

The other addition I was thinking of a racal headset altered to include a headset monitor... ain't there someone to help with tactical info that receive feeds from the helmet cam??
While not canon, I was thinking it could be a good addon...?

Sure, you could do that. Get a Racal headset and attach a copy of the helmet camera to it.

I already have the headset.

But I wasn't thinking of putting a camera to it, but rather a HUD monitor. Like in a tiny TV screen.

I'm thinking someone somewhere must receive the feed from the camera, why not that android that's supposed to help with tactical and medical care of the crew?

You could get one of those kid's spy gadget texting toys. It's a headset with a hud, and a keypad that attaches to your arm. Looks pretty cool actually.

I was thinking about a headset like that:

http://www.shopwildplanet.com/prod/WPT70133.html

I'm hoping to hook it to the a wireless cam. If it works I'll have to fit one inside a helmet cam just for fun :D

you think the whole idea is worthed?

I'm cheating and buying only the spare headset.

Apparently minimal modifications makes it NTSC (normal TV) compatible.

That's basically what I said when I saw it. But it was out of stock. it came back in-stock only tuesday of last week, so I ordered one straight away*... from what I understand its not ment to remain in-stock.

Moreover, when I got the URL for that in another forums, the guy also pointed to a mod

http://jakeofalltrades.wordpress.com/20 ... d-display/

that I will try to perform. Technically, small changes and you have a "normal" NTSC monitor - the "video" standard like you have from a VCR "audio-video cable"

but i think we're getting off-topic. Should I start a thread about that once I receive it?

* Straight away is a big word. I had to explain the wife why we need a replacement part to a toy we don't even have... lol.

I always found it funny, did anybody else catch this, but Bishop was bound by Asimov's Robotic law, from the book I-Robot

. "It is impossible for me to harm or by omission of action, allow to be harmed, a human being." ~Bishop

"1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3 .A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law."

Three Laws of Robotics written by Issac Asimov in 1942

Talk about Sci-Fi Crossovers.......

Yeah I had to read I Robot back in high school- still sorta remember two of the storylines (weren't there three or four short stories?).

I totally caught that line from Bishop when I first heard it back in 1986 as it was about the same time I read I Robot.

It is also the reason Bishop hands the VP70 off to Ripley right away- his programming probably would not allow him to use firearms.

The laws of robotics are one of the core tenets of all robot fiction, and are generally accepted as universal. In William Gibson novels it leads to AIs hiring humans to do the damage for them- they are not harming, or by their own actions directly causing harm...it's a grey area.
