The acronym is probably a throwback to modern naval assault ships, too. Acronyms for troop-carrying ships have started with the letter L since the WW2 era: LCI (Landing Craft, Infantry), LST (Landing Ship, Tank) on up to the modern LPDs and the LHA and LHD Amphibious Assault ships, aka "Gator Freighters". If memory serves, LHA and LHD break down into something like "Landing ship, Helicopter-capable, Assault/Dock" respectively... or something unnecessarily technical like that.

If you went along those lines, I could see "LAS" standing for "Landing Ship, Assault, Spacefaring" or some such.
