The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Is there any truth to this? I consider myself an Alien/Aliens expert, yet I've only heard this in the past year or so. Personally, I'm not seeing any resemblance. Somebody help me out here. Is this true? How the heck is there a connection?

I've heard this before and didn't like it so looked into it. I think this is a red-herring.

The best root-source for this story I can find for this is Dr. Tammy Frank of the "Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution" in Florida. She said on July 16th 1999:
Quote:
"We're pretty sure this is the animal they modeled the creature in the movie 'Alien' from. Hollywood wouldn't have to do much with this design except make it a lot bigger and give it a nasty disposition." - SOURCE

When someone with a PhD says that they're "pretty sure", does that make it true?

She's not heard of some guy called H.R. Giger then?

I thought the Alien was based on Giger's love of phallic symbology...

QFT. Giger was a sick dude, lol. Did you know that they had to change the original design of the facehugger egg for the movie? Giger's original design had the facehuggers coming out of the top of the egg through what was basically a foot long vagina... complete with inner and outer labia

Yeah I've always heard that the Alien design was based off of a very similar looking creature he did in one of his earlier paintings, Necronom IV, as seen here:

http://www.giger.com/Posters/PosterInfo04.jsp

I knew about the egg vagina thing. Hell if you look at the eggs, they still sorta look like vaginal lips (labia) at the opening.

Camel Spiders...Those look...nasty.

And checkout Giger's Alien Lanscapes...there are a few 'interesting' lanscapes...especially the one that was based off the 'Cowboy' ride.

Stay safe,

Tim.

All of Giger's work has very sexual overtones.

Check the "openings" in the derelict that the Nostromo crew enter from the outside.

Very sexual overtones.

First time hearing about the deep sea creature. Nasty little thing.

Someone should email the man himself and just ask him. :D

I have alot of Giger's images and they are all very sexual.
It's also interesting to see how the alien warrior developed from forms in his earlyier work, befor he was contracted for Alien.

Oh they're real alright.... sorry Mike. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camel_spider
http://www.camelspiders.net/

Back on topic... Yes, Necronom IV was the basis for the Xenomorph, and yes, that is a giant penis on its head. I just find it funny that the more their look evolves from film to film, that penis is becoming les & less apparent.

Oh... and yes, Giger is obessed with peepees. Have you ever heard of Penis Landscape? It was the original artwork used for the Dead Kennedys' album Frankenchrist.... and then it got replaced by a photo of Shriners.

Simple. The Aliens don't look like spiders.
I can watch "Aliens" over and over and I love it; try to put me in front of "8 legged freaks" and I'll sh*t myself!

Re the camel spider. I never knew too much about them but thanks to Dom's link I discovered that they are not true spiders! Who knew! Still, it makes litte difference. They look like spiders and that's enough to send me to phobiaville.

They are apparently non venemous too.
"The greatest threat they pose to humans, however, is their bite in self-defense when one tries to handle them..."

Ha, well no danger for me there then I won't be attempting to handle them!!
But I disagree with that assesment. I think the greatest threat they pose is cardiac arrest should I find one sitting under my helmet or bergen!

Hmm. They are obviously spider-like but never caused me a problem for some reason.

You can see the xenomorph in different incarnations in alot of his early work. Necronom IV is perhaphs the most obvious. Others such as this and this are equally familiar.

And in case anyone was still unconvinced about Gigers sexual imagery they need only look here:

Because in the movies they blow them away with lots of firepower

If I could do that to spiders on occasion, I think I would like them around

Heh, Troy just told me that in Iraq in 2005 one of his soliders actually emptied a clip at a camel spider while trying to retreat.

He said he had to get onto the kid but later when out patted him on the back and said, "I'd have done it too."

And yeah....

Aliens look nothing like spiders.

30 rounds at a spider!?
Blimey. I'd have just run :D

Our rifle's select leaver is labled "R" for single shot (repetition) and "A" for automatic.
We joke that it's "R" for "Regular People" and "A" for Americans. :P
Now you see why. :P

The above is only friendly banter. Please don't take it the wrong way. We're all collegues after all.
