The differences are sort of hard to explain; I'm not trying to be vague or difficult... it's just a general quality issue. The Kingform covers just... fit and look better. It's like buying Nike versus Wal-Mart brand sneakers. They're both perfectly functional, one's just... better.

You can find a great resource for hat sizing here. This will allow you to find your "normal" hat size. You'll measure -directly- above your ears for this. But this gives you a starting point.

Now, in the USMC, covers are literally "perched" on your head, with the exception of helmets and boonie covers. I'll include 2 quick photos I just shot for this purpose, to show where a proper USMC cover would sit. (don't mind the lack of haircut at the moment, Marines).... Though this is a cammie cover, the dress cover would sit in the exact same place. I wear a "medium" hat, but this cover is size "small", specifically to perch in the right position. I see people wear this cover at times in the same size as a baseball cap... they jam in on their noggins down to their ears and that's just plain wrong. These covers perch much higher.

Front:

Side:

The distance between the top of my ear and the bottom edge of the cover on the side is approximately 2 fingers. This is also how to measure the brim from your eyebrows.

Let me know if this is at all helpful.

EDIT-

Thanks for the advice and pics Derek! It is indeed helpful. I wear a size 7 hat- but it looks like I should go a size or two smaller?

Yeah I was worried about that. Looks like we may have to leave the cuff?

I would like to make sure all EGA symbols are removed and replaced with plain brass buttons.

I can't promise without seeing it but it should be fairly easy to open the seam, remove the "flap" and then restitch the seam.

If you've got access to a sewing machine - 5 -10 minutes work.
If it's by hand then allow a little longer. Perhaphs 15-20 minutes.

Are the sleeves lined?

I was at the Army/Navy store today and had a decent thought...the ribbons are gonna be hell to make, thats for sure. BUT, this store had a ton of them that we could buy and strip..then make our own. There might be a way that we could get the same fabric, and silk screen them somehow....OR, Rex had a great idea of wrapping them with thread...that would look VERY good. Im game for whatever...Ill go by there tomorrow and get a few and experiment.

Next...the Delta pins. From intel that Ive gathered, these are a go for us. Rex has offered up $50, Sarge $30, and FNG says he will chip in too...the total is $278.00. Ill be happy to give you guys my Paypal address and we can go from there if thats what you all want...just let me know and Ill post it...

Glad you saw it... I was afraid it was getting lost in the posts!

So, regarding ribbons... (I just read Derek's post, too), please check out this site to see the difference between "normal" ribbons (shown on left) and "thin" or "mil-thin" ribbons (shown on right). The thin ribbons are awesome... less bulky, etc.

Now, could this simply, maybe, be replicated with a high-quality printer... some good plastic backing board, and a regular ribbon mount?

Bear with me...

Dom's ribbons are excellent... there's ribbon-like texture, etc. So, get them sized up to real ribbon specs, buy a standard ribbon mount (here) based on however many you have... print out Dom's ribbons, cut out the plastic backing board to fit, then glue to the mount? When you earn a new one... simply recut, reprint, and voila... done?

For numbers for extra drops, either use the printed one or affix a real one...

Slap me around if this wouldn't work.

Ok..about these ribbons...my wife just brought out her oboe and showed me a piece that she had wrapped in thread...it was ABSOLUTELY perfect for what we need.
Check out this pic...

http://www.musicstoreinc.com/index.php? ... mnum=lesho

The colored parts are thread...just like what Rex mentioned to me...and the good thing is...she has two boxes full of these threads...and every color of the "Outworld Rainbow Flag" (DC goers will know what I mean..lol)
So, I was thinking...Im gonna go tomorrow and get a few pop cicle sticks and some ribbon mounts....and make some...Ill post pics when I get done.

I'm liking these ribbons!!

Forgot to mention a reply to your question, yes ,the sleeves are lined. It would not be fun to try and re-do it.

And, my jacket is toooo small across the chest. :?

In my excitement, I ordered a 42 instead of a 44. It's about 2" gap across my chest.

Sleeves fit good...

Who needs it?

Rex what is your normal jacket size?

A 42?

So if I'm a 39 chest and comfortably wear a 40- I should look for a 42? Or at least a 41?

Is there a size tag inside it? Are you a regular or long?

I'm (unfortunately) a short- maybe even an extra short. :?

From what I've seen online the sleeves seem really long. I just measured a suit jacket I own- it's a 42 short (though it's a little big on me now), the sleeves are 23". Most of the USMC Dress tunics sleeves are around 24-25". Or maybe they are listing the sizes (short/regular) wrong?

Dang! Don't want to grab the wrong size! :(

Derek- Paypal in the pipe! :D

Kev, I'm a 43- usually I can get away with a 42, but no where near in this case bro. If you're a 39-40, then this is yours. It'll fit you perfectomundo!

I don't know what to tell you about the sleeve length, want me to measure 'em?

There's no tag inside it.

Considering you're a few inches taller than me I doubt the sleeves would be short enough to fit me (my arms are on the short side to begin with).

Measure them anyway for me Bro. If they are more the 23 1/2" from the seam to the cuff- they'll be too long on me (like- past my knuckles :( ).

Been thinking about the rank placement issue. Anyone else have any thoughts? I'm having second thoughts of putting the rank on the arms considering we want to retain the Eagle patch and Flag patches.

So I'm leaning toward Derek (Smith's) suggestion of putting rank pins on the epaulettes. Anyone else agree/disagree with this idea?

Otherwise if we really want to keep the Eagle- (without having to have a custom "shorter" one made) we should go with the one rank insignia on the left arm?

Thoughts?

DevilDog- so on the ribbons... what's this plastic backing you mentioned? Is it part of the ribbon rack itself?

What I got from your post is to print out the digital ribbons (we are sporting in our signatures) on paper- and glue the paper to the ribbon rack? Then add real numerals (or printed numerals) for multiple drops?

It would certainly work for me. Quick and easy!

Personally, I would prefer rank on the arms. I'm not sure it would look quite right without it.

Even better option - print the ribbons onto the magical inkjet cotton and wrap to create a ribbon.

Lined sleves - add another 10 minutes onto the job of removing the "flap" at the lining will need to be resewn by hand.
It's not a difficult job but I appreciate that not everyone is as happy with that extent of seamwork.

No no... the plastic board I was thinking of is something I figure you could get a comic store or something... or WalMart, Target, whatever. Just like any rigid plastic... sheet. Or something.

Don't worry Tony, I'll hold a set of everything you'll need to equip your set of Dress Blues when you get the $$ together.

I can't think of you at DCon without this uniform! (as well as a few others, one in particular... )
