The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

The circular ‘Weyland-Yutani 161’ patches from Poland arrived. They’re pictured here next to an older one by Harry for some comparison. They are not 100% SA but I like them. The material is very supple, unlike any embroidered patches I have ever handled. I have flipped one over in the bottom left of the photo to display the back. Have a look!

So there's really no belt loops on these trousers? They are the strangest and most redundant piece of costuming: elastic waist with the drawstring in the front, laces in the back, and they're worn with a thick honking belt.

Some of them do have loops, some of them don't.

The photos are on a disk which is elsewhere at the moment but I'll try to get a photo up here soon of an example with belt loops.

Hey everyone.

I’m jumping in too, with a parka build. I found this site while doing my research. I lurk and post over on RPF but there are no posts I could find on this jacket.

The jacket itself can be quite easy. Under $100 for a new Alpha industries, but it’s what I call the “commercial” version. It was not made under contract and has the black/gold Alpha tag under the white label inside (which does not have the date). I’m looking for a pre-1980 version. There are enough I can be picky here. No one knows the year of the ones used for the film, but they were certainly surplus and probably 20 years old when collected by the prop department. So, 1980 or earlier for me.

Anyway, I have some patches in hand but I’m not happy with the red one. I got all three from the same eBay vendor (cosplaypatch), and the quality is great, just they don’t look 100%. The bird I can doctor up. I got two in case I screw it up somehow, but it seems pretty straightforward. The black and white one for the ball cap is okay too I guess. Not as well documented so after weathering it’ll be fine. The red one, I’d like a better looking one. If anyone can help.

For name tape, I went with a UK military sling for something. It’s OD green cotton webbing with a slightly different weave to it. I also noticed the name stencil is about 3/4” high and the rank/title is about 1/2” high. Just a detail I noticed doing my research. There’s an art supply store near work where I’m going to check for stencils. I already have black fabric markers (fine and medium tip).

That ball cap was a bit of a mystery for a while. I thought it would be easy, because I’ve seen the cap before, but it wasn’t that easy. The local army-navy couldn’t ID it from screen caps either. Finally I figured out it is a dyed OG-106 cap. I found a seller in Texas with NOS ones but only in size 7-1/4, which happens to be my size. I grabbed another German belt from that same seller in TX. I already have one (which I upgraded with a leather belt) and my local army-navy had two last time I checked.

20-hole boots I found for reasonable money, considering they are new. What are we going with for socks? I have some knee-high white Dickies work socks but I’m not certain if the socks are seen or not…

Pants I’m hoping someone ends up making them. Otherwise, who is the best option for for those “close” ones that two of you guys have? I didn’t see that mentioned.

I drink coffee as a public service. Me, without coffee, would make a Xenomorf cower with fear. Coffee cups appear to be Japan made, but there are many similar. “Half heart” handles are a good search term, but I think they’re just tapered. I found a red Japan one… also Russian surplus are very similar. And less expensive. Beat up ones on eBay are pushing forty bucks after shipping. That’s too much for me, for that.

The mock turtleneck shirt is no longer sold under the “Hanes” brand but they have another name they use (Port & company) that seems to be the same pattern. I found two of them at the thrift store for $3 each but not my size…

The other details are: watch cover (reproduction ones are cheap n easy), dog tags (the local and my-navy makes them on an old machine) and the keychain. I know a little about the keychain, but not much. I guess I should get my number issued so I can have tags made. I presume they have the chains as well but I haven’t bought tags before, just saw the machine there.

I would be grateful for any assistance here!

Found and purchased my jacket. 1978 vintage. Very nice other than some stains which may come out when I have it cleaned.

I’ll pull the ruff before it goes to the cleaners but it’s in Pretty nice shape overall. Should make a nice base.

Welcome! Some shots clearly show a grey wool sock folded over at the top of the boot, so that's an option.

That's what I SAW, but we can't trust the colors we see on film...

Any ideas where I might search for knee-high wool socks? I'll check the usual suspects on line, but if they've been found, it would save me some searching time.

(and thank you for the welcome!)

My hat came in. It's a 507 (with the leather headband) not the 106, but it looks the part (and was $10 brand new), along with my second German belt.

My jacket arrived today- it's in decent shape but does have some "character" stains on it. I'll rip the ruff off and send it to the cleaners. Despite being XL size, the body is still very short on me, particularly in the back. I know it should sit at the waist, but this thing is short!

Meanwhile, my cap is soaking in a bath of hot black dye. I cut the interior mesh out, as best I could, as it was causing a very odd "peak" down the center of the cap, which is exaggerated when I wear it... They have extra material in the front so it stands up a bit too, so even with the plastic mesh out, it's still looking odd. I couldn't remove it from the center seam, because they sew the panel seam, inner tape and the plastic all together. I think I can get the center piece out when I rip the seam but I need to place the patch first. Fiddly work...

I also plan to begin the beak reduction surgery of my patch.

I ordered another red 161 patch for the side too. The silver and white are not right. I have an all white one on the way now. Also not perfect, I think it may be better... It was cheap enough anyway.

I will have to rip the cap seam under the patch and take in the extra fabric, so it sits smoothly on my head, as it did on Aaron's head. Sot of a PITA but not horrible. I don't think the seamstress can deal with this unfortunately because I need to stitch and fit about thirty-seven times...

I missed out on an Alpha jacket early last year (kicking myself that I decided being married was more important, lame).

Post pics as you go please (so I can realise my costume dreams vicariously 8) ).

Okay. Today I dyed my cap- actually it’s in the bucket now- I’m letting it fester all night.

I aged the hat patch with sandpaper and the over abundance of shop filth we have.

Then I did beak reduction surgery on my patch. It wasn’t bad to take out the threads, but I did have to take the rear sealant off the patch (razor) to get the threads all out.

My cap is dark green… it’s soaking iN standard black dye overnight tonight. The synthetic dye didn’t do it. If it’s still green tomorrow, I’ll get some red dye to blacken it.

Weathered my bird patch today too.

Then I started on the jacket. Pulled the ruff off, and I’ll drop it off this weekend at the cleaners. I wore it a bit and it’s nowhere near as warm as my Canada Goose parka. About the same as my N1 deck jacket I’d say.

I also drafted and cut out the shirt stencil sized to the sizes stated elsewhere (another thread I think). I can save it as a pdf and then anyone can print it. Just scale as needed to match the dimensions on the drawing.

Figuring the layout of my (and Aaron’s) dog tags. This is helpful:

I got my tags made today. But, they have a WW2 era machine that fits 15 characters, not the standard 18 now. So I had to split up my number between row two and three. They screwed up and changed an S to a 5 but whatever. Under 8 bucks for two notched tags, long and short chain and “silencers”.

Not bad.

I checked my hat earlier, but now it’s going to sit in dye over the weekend… I forgot to pull it out before I left…

Seems like the closest match. No button on the top of the crown which the mil hats don’t have.

But I’ve not found black ones, only OD.

I took this off the screen last night. It is distorted due to camera to screen angle, but I wanted to see the patch placement.

I found a dog tag vendor on line that debossed the tags with 18 characters per line (so the entire number fits on line 2) and also laser engraved the bar code image I showed above under it. Oh, and shipped them the same day I finalized the design!

My hat is very dark green now, so it's going to get a bath in red dye soon. I also removed all the "heat seal" stuff from the back side of the patch, which softens it up considerably. I suggest this trick for all patches!

And I got my second 161 red sleeve patch. It's an eBay special, but I like the look better than the one I had. Still not right, and I hope someone has a more accurate one they'd part with, or perhaps I'll have a run done with the "W" proper width and all three numbers in "161" the same height. I think it works out to ~$10 per patch for 50 of them. I just don't want to be sitting on 49 of them for ever...

Pants are another issue. Custom would be great, but a "close enough" solution is also proving to be elusive... I have a mock turtleneck found (not perfect but very close) as well as boots and socks. Watch cover is easy, but I'm a watch nerd so I may get something unusual for the other wrist- I think Aaron wore the cover on his right wrist?

Not much else to report. I'm restarting a Micro-Seiki BL-91 and that's taking a good bit of my focus and energy right now.

Where are the good ones?!?

Please help!

Does anyone have a good red patch they’ll part with to finish my jacket? I’ll move forward with one I have but I’d really like to get it right the first time!

Jacket is finally at the cleaners and next stop is the seamstress.

Back on track- my hat looks bad. I went for the nuclear option and gave it a red dye batch to counter the green that just won’t die, er, dye.

Plan B: rattle can. I need to fillet the front seam under the patch to get it to lay flat. That’ll be tricky but I need to counter the Mohawk look I currently get.
