The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hello all!

I've wanted a Pulse Rifle for a long time and recently decided to 3D print one, that started an Aliens prop building spree that is ongoing :).

I'll start with the PR. FDM 3D printed on a Wanhao I3 using Oleg Khmarnyi's model from myminifactory. Glued together, filled and sanded. Painted using Rustoleum deep green and flat black, then some weathering with gunmetal, brown wash and some black oil pastel.

Belt tool by martinr1000 on thingiverse. (Has since been weathered).

Helmet camera by mkauffman41 on thingiverse. I printed out a pic of the lens face on some photo paper and glued it into the front, then added a glass lens in the middle.

Shoulder lamp by April storm props on Etsy.

I modified this to give the handle some angle, added a LED light with reflector from a torch and some metal mesh.

The helmet build is a work in progress.

The helmet is an ABS reproduction and I have made some parts on the 3D printer, others are metal pieces from the 'pile' or just cut from scrap materials. I made a version of the lobster plates out of heatformed ABS but have since done some lighter EVA foam versions.

I couldn't find 3D files of the hand welder so I had a go at designing one myself. It's not great! :D. I'm only using Sketchup and doing curves and complex 'round things' is out of my league so I made some parts to be filled with filler to create the curves. There's no grip texture so I would like to add that later as well as a green tinted plastic instead of the solid black I have now in the screen section.

Glad someone is using my file. I have some other 3D files for props similar to some you have shown, but with a higher degree of accuracy than those commercially available, IF you're interested.

Thanks for the file! I didn't find it straight away but stumbled upon it when using different search terms, glad I didn't have to try and recreate the camera myself :).

Would like to see what else you have done :D.

All BEAUTIFUL builds!

One bit of advice i have is that most of the helmet parts look oversized. I have never seen a scratch build that didn't start off "too big" and required some shrinking (including and especially my own!). Use the ear cushion that you have as reference. That should be able to actually wrap around the entire ear defender (so everything should be the same size or smaller than the cushion). The entire mic/boom assembly on a real one is only about 22cm from back to tip (including a gentle curve)

Great looking stuff overall!

Thanks bigbisont! I was watching your videos on youtube about making the armour and it helped me get some side views of the earpiece. Originally I took some basic measurments from some earmuffs I had and the ear cushion is from a broken gaming headset. Good thing about 3D modeling is I can shrink the size easily and reprint.

What thickness is the aluminium sheet you are using, I need to go buy some :)

I have revisted the helmet earflap parts and shrunk them down about 10%. It does look better, I also printed out the pepakura parts and they match up size wise pretty close.

Speaking of pepakura I have printed out the templates and have picked up some aluminium. Looks like lots of hammering in my near future!

Started hammering out some pieces, this may end up as a test set as I'm getting the hang of shaping the aluminium and I also found better templates in another post.

Thanks geo71!

I guess I'll do some more, each time I finish something I have a look around and say "I guess I could do that too". :)

I've redone the helmet pieces in aluminium, bump plate still to do. Picked up some grey vinyl and have printed out cybermike's template for the ab pad. Will sew that up once I get some padding to go inside it.

Those have to be the best finished 3D prints I’ve ever seen, of any subject. Looks like a resin kit!
Keep up the great work :)

Thanks reaper!

It takes some time to get rid of the print layer lines, I get to a point where I say that will do. It is great to see the parts with paint on them and then to get feedback like that is awesome!

I have sewn up the ab pad, it went ok :). It was quite hard to get a smooth curve on the little details with the bulk of the pad in the way. I am yet to do the second line of stitching on the inside of the details, I'll build up some courage for that one.

Cheers seven!

I have 'finished' the greaves as well as starting to prime and paint some parts in a basic green.

Buddy you've got this dialed in!
Looks like you've got a bead roller/ beading maschine?
The flutting on those greaves is top notch.
I bet a list of your tools and tricks would go over pretty well.
gauges of the aluminum ect.

Ha! I wish I had a beading machine! Very tempted to get one for this as I went along. It's all just hand hammered over various metal stakes. Bigbisont's videos were my source for all of the techniques and without them I would not have even attempted it.

Did you rescale the motion tracker? was 100% the correct size? Ive seen other print them and they looked to small.

I did print it at 110% only based on what a couple of people mentioned on the thingiverse page. I have no idea if that is right or not. Just need one dimension of a known part to set if it is right :)
