The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

nuts the link expired. Have you considered uploading to thingivere.com? Free hosting and easy source for many 3d files.

everything past the barrel and shroud which I downloaded yesterday...

I have no intent to sell or recast or any of that. It will be a build strictly for me. Just throwing that out there.

Anything 3d printed comes down to how its printed and built.
PLA+ and ABS are strong easy to print products. Pain the arse to sand and smooth off. But thats the trade off
How you set up your printer file it is the most important thing when it comes to strength and smoothness.
Layer hight
wall thickness
infill density
print speed
if your layer hight is .1 and your wall thickness is 3mm and your infill is 50%
that is going to be stronger smoother than something that is rush printed at .3 layer hight and 1mm wall thickness and 20% infill density.
But the sacrifice is it will take 4 times longer to print and use twice as much filament. But its going to be stronger smoother and easier to prep for paint.
If you use good quality glues and metal fasteners and reinforcers where possible. Then its as strong or iff not stronger than a resin prop.
I wouldn't recommend dropping it or smashing it against the wall. but i wouldn't recommend doing that to any prop.
You can coat the final 3d print with a thin layer of resin. that gives it strength and helps smooth out the print lines. But you can loose fine detail.
Hope that wasn't to long winded.

Thing is with 3d prints you just use two part super glue to put back together things, sand slightly and it is stronger at the failure point. Repaired properly, the fix actually increases durability of the prop...

I was more wondering how this particular one was put together, like if it was intended to be super sturdy or if it was more for display with not much infill n stuff. I just did some shoulder lamp parts with 40% infill and they are rock solid.

sometime I'd like to experiment with expanding foam in the hollow parts of my prints, just gotta make sure it doesnt bust it at the seams.

When you are doing a 3D printed build, how mush sanding down to remove any visible layering of the print is required?

I have a 3D printed Alien Bust and it seems to have a huge amount of sanding that is going to be required. What would you recommend for smoothing this issue down?

Lots of tricks to reducing sanding. None stop it completely tho.
1. print at the finest resolution layers. takes longer to print but saves you lots of sanding and retains more detail.
2. lightly fill the lines with filler. EG car bog, fibreglass resin spray putty. All require a good sanding are are messy.
3. This is a bit out there but it works well. Buy UV resin for resin 3d printer and lightly paint it and then take it outside in the sun our under a UV lamp.
It sands very easy, is mess free and the uv resin wipes up if you spill it. but sets in seconds in the sun or UV.

I saw that some improvements were made to the overall shape, but how close is he getting to the actual movie style instead of the airsoft gun? I would love to see this project reach that point.
