The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

HI Guys,

Would anyone know what the original font was used for the decals on the M40 Grenade Box.

https://thepropstop.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/lastscan.jpg

Thanks

Andy

Moosh is the expert there. I have been helping a bit with getting a set of screen accurate lettering made.

I think there is a process to submit to have a font set made official. If we can finish that, we can make things easier for other aspiring artists and costumers.

I've finished my file, and I plan to offer decals publicly soon :delta:

With help from retrogarde and bigbisont, they are very accurate :)

Hmm, now I'm curious - is there any shot that show the M-40 on the top to be italic?
Never seen that before....

Cheers

The top M-40 is definitely italic, it also looks like they used an "O" instead on a "0".

The "G" in Grenade and "Q" on the side also looks to be either custom or a different font.

Woah! Cool find!
But .... looks like I have to redo my box....

It's strange that they used italics only for the M-40 part which looks somewhat out of place.
Also it's interesting to see that the box was partially repainted (when compard to the image in the first post).

Cheers,
Stefan

The original box was red but as you say @bugstomer there looks like a brown and then green colour on it.
Its difficult to see if its Brown Bess thou.

I'd have to have a stipulation of no resale on decals made using my files, as well as charge a small fee to purchase the file, but other than that, I would strongly consider that option

I completely agree. How odd.

Here's an image of the box taken many years ago when it was on the 'Aliens Archive' website showing the original scratches down to the red (or possibly orange) plastic. There were no images of the top of the box at the time. This was possibly done deliberately to stop folks from copying the prop as I think the website owner was very anti-replica.

retrogarde do you have any other images of the box, and are you able to post the side view image without the letters circled?

Fantastic - thank you so much!

Interestingly I have one of those wooden grenades like the one on the left. I've never seen another one before until now!

I should have asked you before but do you have any info about the auction this was in? I keep as many files and as much information as I can about stuff like that.

Harry

This pics are great. I have them in my files but cannot remember where I got them from. I have always said I was going to start naming them with the information but never did. The only other pic I have is from the screen cap. Again cannot give credit as I do not remember where I got it. I am sure it was here or on an Aliens fan page.

I'm not to sure how many of these props where made, as you can see from gman666 photos there is weathering on the lettering and the photos ive uploaded the letters are very clean.

Edited

My mistake i believe these are the same item as you can see a blemish on the "G" on both photos

The other auction images are interesting too!
The details on the "push-button" on the grenade is also something I never saw before.

Also Dropship Helmets, Flamer - looks like Gio sold his collection.
I really hope he's ok!

Thanks retrogarde. Is there any way of knowing when the sale took place? It looks like that site just has rolling sales on it and isn't a specific auction event site like, say Propstore.

Hi Harry,
I don't see any dates on any of these sales either. That's kind of strange. I honestly just stumbled across this page about a month ago when I was looking to improve my grenade box.

Short of writing an email to the website...
Archive.org has the earliest capture in March of 2017, where it had already been marked as sold.

What colour did they paint the box?

Was it Brown Bess?
