The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Since the Weapons sub is locked I thought I'd document my build here. Mods if this is out of bounds please move or delete it!

So what seems like forever ago I got set of Matsu shrouds. (2009) I wanted to build a PR to go with my CM gear.

Then a few other parts over the course of a year or so... but the 870 eluded me. Eventually I got the cast version from Matsu as well, but the rack mechanism left a little to be desired. You'd think living in Texas it would be easy to find a real steel 870 for parts but after 30 or so pawn shops and places I gave up and it all went in the black hole I call the costume room.

Zoom ahead to last year and I'm having lunch with a buddy and we are talking about all my costumes and I mention how I always wanted the PR to go with Colonial Marine and long story short... he has a "barn gun" that doesn't work anymore and he thinks it's an 870 express... It's mine now. but I was in the middle of a droid build and once again the black hole effect kicked until covid-19. I happened to get the 4K Alien and after watching it naturally the wife wanted to see Aliens so back to back "movie nights" and here I am... I feel inspired. I have begun.

this is what I am starting with... I don't even know what I have anymore.

Matsu Shrouds
Real 870
Real SPAS
Majenko Counter???
All Metal Airsoft Thompson
unknown
unknown
unknown... rest of the parts... I think SD Studios for Barrel Vents
missing the mag base
2 different barrel end plates also unknown

1st Step was prep the deactivated 870

Image

That was fairly easy.

Next was to get the SPAS in order.
I had decided I want use Aluminum Black to "blue" all the bare metal. So ordered some and went about stripping the paint from the SPAS.

I also burned up a few Dremel Cutoff Wheels to get everything ship shape and ready receive the 870.

Next was the part I was dreading the most... attaching the SPAS slide to the 870 rack ring. Now my welding skill sucks and I don't have access right now, but I do have a 3D printer and I am very well versed in functional 3D printing so why not have a whack at it.

20 minutes later and 1 iteration I had this.

Image

Which I cut down to fit and that made this...

Image
Image

It moves very nice so far... next I will work on attaching the slide.

Great to see your PR build (progress). I like the 3D printed Slide mount.
Good luck!

Waiting for the Aluminum Black to arrive hopefully today and I will "blue" the metal and paint the shrouds. In the meantime I've been researching the Majenko board.

I found the info for my v2 Majenko board and since I cannot find it anywhere else here I thought I would document it in this thread.
I need to find some LEDs I want use and I will wire up the board.

Separate triggers for pulse rifle and grenade launcher
Optional 3-position switch for firing mode selection
Automatic display switching between pulse rifle and grenade launcher
Grenade launcher priming using pump action
Separate LED connections for pulse rifle and grenade launcher muzzle flash
Grenade launcher firing sound plus randomly delayed explosion sound
Single shot pulse rifle sound developed especially for this module
99 to 95 countdown on magazine insertion
All the inputs are active-low (connect to ground to trigger them), and the LED connections are all open-drain. The connections to the various switches and buttons are as follows:

IO0: Pulse rifle trigger button
IO1: Magazine presence detect button
IO2: Grenade launcher trigger button
IO3: Grenade launcher pump action button
The two LEDs are:

LED0: Pulse rifle muzzle flash
LED1: Grenade launcher muzzle flash
The sounds included in the firmware are from a number of sources, some free, some donated by dedicated individuals, and some even developed and synthesized especially for this module.

Things you need to know / provide:

Battery pack: between 6.4V and 15V - 7.2V Li-Ion / NiMh recommended.
Speaker: ~2.6W, 8Ω. This is a differential output and should be connected direct to a speaker. For powered speakers or external amplifiers use the LINE connection instead, or you risk killing the amplifier chip.
Muzzle flash LEDs: Up to 2.4A per channel, you need to supply load resistors. Calculate from your battery pack supply voltage.
Switches / buttons: Two triggers, grenade launcher pump action, magazine detect.
Wires: Button connections are 0.8mm diameter maximum, speaker and LED connections are 0.95mm, and power connections are 1.2mm.

Two LED output channels can drive two LEDs, or whole banks of LEDs, at up to 2.4A pulse current per channel - that's a lot of LEDs! Fully PWM driven, these channels could be programmed to create a variety of effects to enhance your weapon. A bright dual digit 14.4mm red LED display gives your ammunition count, and looks just like the ones in the film (well, they all look the same really these displays, so it's hard not to).

6 IO ports on the board for linking to buttons and switches make it really simple to wire the board up. However, I'll let you into a little secret... These IO ports are also analogue inputs, so you could have all sorts of sensors and things connected to them, not just buttons.

So Aluminum Black... meh ... I believe in posting fails and wins so here imo is a fail.

So it's messy,
sloppy,
uneven,
hard to control since it's a chemical reaction,
fragile once done although I did not try and oil it, simply because I do not like the finish.

I will probably try one more time then give up since I didn't even make it to the vent or barrel tip.

On the other hand I painted the shrouds and they look good. The flash of the camera makes them look a little bright ... they are not, I will take a pic without flash later. I am pleased with the color.

After reading about others facing the same problems I am I have decided to sand and paint the black parts. I am not willing to do anodizing at this point and the fact that there are different alloys of aluminum at play and the colors will never match.

There are a few rough spots that I think I will leave as it gives it some natural weathering grit and I plan to weather it anyway so I can hide any egregious crimes.

Time to make the stock retractable stock.

First I got this screw from the Thompson tear down. I got the compression spring at Lowes.

Image

Next I drilled out the mount hole.

Image

and a little bit of Dremeling to make it shorter on the inside.

Image

extend the center slot and make a few detent holes.
Image

Put a nylock on the bottom and viola a springy detent.
Image

I think I need a little nubbin on top to grasp, I am going to get a knurled valve cap and cut it down or something like it ... I have not decided. I also have not mounted in the shrouds yet to make sure this thing is solid... I feel like I need 2 screws holding the rail so I may drill and tap another guide screw once I play with it a bit.

...and that was a tactical error!

Turns out the shrouds cover it just a little to much... back to the drawing board tomorrow.

I need some help!!! See later in this post

Hold the phone... my sliding stock still works!!!!

First I made a little space in the shroud...
Image

it's hard to tell from this image but I am using the screwdriver on the left to push the pin up(right). So this means I can either keep a little tool in the butt of the stock or engineer something to do the pushing ... I'll probably do that!
Image

Next was the shotty... look I know people don't agree with cutting the cage this much but if you don't remove the trigger spring on the 870 there is no way to get the gun in the cage. After putting it in and taking it out 15 times I'd had enough. that little spot is not even visible so I cut it... now the gun goes in and out like butter...
Image
Image
Image

test fitting the shrouds and making adjustments where needed.
Image

Tomorrow I will work on the slide attachment (I've already started) and hopefully get the barrel vent and ring attached.
In the meantime...

I need some help!!! How do I attach the block?

here is the attach point...
Image

and here you can see the block mount...
Image

Now the question? If the shotgun is in the cage, I cannot get to the screws. If the shotgun is not in the cage then I can screw it in but then I can not physically get the shotgun in the cage? The shotgun is a tight fit anyway and because parts are in the way... I am at a loss here. Maybe there is something I am missing.

I saw in earlier pictures that you have previously stripped the thompson down and have you removed the grip and trigger assembly. Have you tried attaching the cage at this point? if not maybe you can slide the shotgun in there afterwards.

cheers

Actually I didn't see that it was airsoft. Does it strip down like this?

While I wait for a few items to come from mother Amazon ... I am going to work on my Slide. It's very tight... does not slide very easily at all. I am in debate about sanding down the inside, because what a pita! and putting in boiling water and trying to widen it a little or using a heat gun.

Anyone faced this before? Search has failed to turn up anything substantial.

Also in the meantime I redesigned my 3d printed slide mount. This should be a lot stronger and give a secure mount, the old one had a little flex in it and I am sure over time would have made problems for me.

heat bending/fitting things has always been a pretty clunky process for me.things always warp a little when I do it. I would go with sanding.
you still need some surface contact so its no rattling and feeling cheap. you could put something like chalk on the inside and run it down the cage to see where the high points are.
Theres also this wd40 brand dry lube stuff.

I did the same stock locking method on my pulse rifle. I just used a longer allen key bolt with a nylock on that actually protrudes through the bottom of the pr so that acts as the button underneath. No need for any tools to adjust the stock then!

Work continues ... next up was getting the vent, loop and barrel mounted. Easy peasy ... drill tap ... errrrrr there is not enough room in there for an allen wrench. Thank god! I had a ball socket allen set.

Image
Image
Image

Missing some images here I'm sorry but disaster struck. I put the 870 back in the GL and started looking at attaching the endplate. I had some button head M5s so I pulled out the tap and started to tap the hole for M5 and snap... yes like an idiot I had it in position so here I am busted tap unable to get it apart... Well I sacked up and ground it down, pulled the barrel and endplate off together and through sheer brute force removed the busted tap. I'm sorry there are no pics at the time I was not thinking about documenting this horrible thing... in the end it made a nice patina of wear marks on the GL that I kinda like so, silver lining.

Image

Next I set about to figure out the counter...
I figured out the Thompson's trigger was off the positive lead so I just snaked a couple of wires in there and used the red wire as the trigger wire on the Majenko

Image

Worked a treat... Video please click the image
Image

and finally I started formulating where to put a battery. I decided I am going to put the battery in the mag. It's not finished yet but conceptually it's there...

Again this is video please click to see the parts working on the bench.
