The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Definitely little and often, even if it means spamming my own thread. :)

I got more done on the main gun and made some decisions about Gorman's command console.

Looking good! That sure is a lot of x-actoing!

Red_2 - yes it certainly is! There's plenty of 3d printing but for all the flat surfaces, styrene sheet is the way to go. :)

Main gun has seen some more attention and a test fitting with the rails.

I'll have a think about how I'm going to hinge the back down like the Hiya Toys APC.

It's nice to see some color on that turret. This brings it home for me.

Thanks Yellowjacket - me too!

Adding some final paint colour is a real morale booster when I get bogged down with a difficult build stretch. That rear section might be the first bit 'completed' with tail lights etc. We'll see. :)

Such an impressive build mate, keep it up!!

I’m glad I’m not the only one that starts to paint to break up all the building, makes it seem more ‘do-able’ so to speak :)

Thanks 88reaper88 - I'm playing with the lighting solution too to break up the building tasks.

I'm sat here watching Terminator Genesis and to take my mind off how bad it is I'm modelling a sentry gun case for the APC on my laptop.

I'll model the cases with removable lids and a hint of the contents. It'll be fun to have them stowed properly with the ability to remove them. Proper play-set style!

I use Blender 2.8. I've been using it professionally for 15 years now so it's my go-to for any CGI/3d print tasks.

I got some time on this today. :) I've been working on the inner bulkheads that'll support the roof.

Image

Cardboard first!

Image

Looks good so I'll knock out another of those for the other side.

Image

I had a thought about stowage for the smart-guns to try keep it canon. I'll insert a small magnet in the bulkhead here (temp one taped in place).

Image

..and cement a little piece of bent wire in the smart-gun (using my prototype print for this).

Image

..and there we are. "Get those weapons stowed". :)

Image

I have two shelves of completed/semi completed pieces for the APC now.

Progress! I started to populate the cabin. I realised that the driver would need to be in an elevated position to see out of the window so I sorted that out first. The driver's chair is the same as Gorman's one at the command position. I put one of my figures in a driving position so I can organise the size and height of foot-pedals, consoles etc.

Image

Image

Image

The micro turbine sits at the left side beside the driver so I scratch built that from styrene sheet and a few nurnies from the spares sprues. The design and positioning of it is from Graham Langridge's wonderful blueprint document (which he graciously forwarded so I could reference it in the build).

I'm now working on the center console that sits at the driver's right hand and looks to house gear levers or throttle tracks (or something!)

Thanks Retrogarde - me too!

Work progresses on the APC cabin interior detailing. There's a large technical looking unit to tuck in between the font bulkhead and the right-hand wheel arch so I scratch built a unit to represent that - kinda like a comms station - from odd kit bits.

Image

I also did some work on the center console's stick control assembly on the top, and a little dressing all round. I found some interesting parts to represent the driver pedals too - which I think will look OK once they're dressed properly (they're just blu-tacked in place).

Image

Image

Overall I'm glad to be back at it. There may be a benefit to lock-down after all. :)

This is so impressive! I love the detailing and especially the greeblies, very much has the feel of pre-CGI kit bashing for sfx.

Hey Dropship Murphy, badkarma, retrogarde - thanks for the lovely remarks. I do design and 3d-print stuff but I love nothing more than going back to my roots and building with styrene, putty and greeblies. :)

I gave the center console piece a wash with primer to see if the pieces on it would hang together. I think they look OK. :) The piece of black card is a place-holder for the foot pedals.

Image

Because the driver's chair is the same as Gorman's I needed to print off another 'kit'.

Image

Here's the kit with the previously made up chair. There's a lot of work to do with these prints but they do save some time and they're built to scale from the off.

I'm now working on the gunner's chair - figuring out scale etc for the 3d print.

Thanks Seven! I'm glad to be able to get the time in at the moment.

The gunner's chair printed out OK. It'll get detailing added later.

The scale looks good when it's placed in situ.

Thank you Stimpy. :)

Next up was to start the driver's console. I wasn't looking forward to this because there's not much about the shape that's regular.

Image

I worked in card first, then styrene.

Image

That looks OK - it'll get a host of detailing.

Image

I decided to secure the door too. The hinges are brass rod in styrene tube.

Image

The gunner's chair got some initial detailing and a coat of primer to check where the rough spots are.

Image

I'll put this and the driver's chair in situ and work on the panel behind them.
