The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Greetings all,

Being the beginning of the year, I thought I would gauge everyone's interest in what we want to do as a group for Dragoncon this year.

AL photo shoot

This was quite popular last year. We got some good attention from various websites with our group. For this year, i was thinking the same thing, but i would want to know what days work best. Keep it on sunday, change the day, or time?

AL table

This was cancelled last year due to lack of interest. Unfortunately, no matter how many times I tell dragoncon the location kinda sucks, they still put fan tables in the Hilton. The only bright side was this past year, the Hilton really stepped up their dragoncon game and there was a lot of foot traffic. I would be willing to be the head of this again.

AL parade

This was also cancelled due to lack of attendance. Hollis DZC has offered to send in our reservation for this year's parade, but we would need someone to organize everyone the day of. We will be with the American Sci Fi track, as the color guard is a separate group.

AL dinner

Again, cancelled due to lack of interest. If we would be interested in having a group dinner, someone would have to be the chair on this. Our main stay of the past few years has new management, and was not very accommodating two years ago. I am up for any suggestions.

Other stuff

If anyone has any other ideas, please bring them forth. I know there was talk last year of a modified combat shoot where it was more of a group of us going from hotel to hotel, hanging out.

If/when I hit dragoncon this year, if there is no parade, group banquet, nor fan table, I will be PISSED.
Count me in for all 3. If I find that none of this stuff is happening again, it will actually effect my desire to go.

-I will work at least 2 hrs of the fan table.
To anyone who hates working the fantable, I'll bring you 3 beers per hour. It really isnt that hard. Drinking beers and talking 'Aliens' is my kind of day.

-For the parade, of course it is hot. It's Atlanta. But you know the famous quote; "It is better to look good than to feel good. And you look marvelous". We can get it done. Count me in for 5 people.

-For the group banquet, Pitty Pat's porch has the biggest juiciest fried chicken this world has ever seen. I wouldn't feel the trip were complete without it. Lets get it done! Myself and my wife will be there (assuming it happens).

^ THIS sounds like some of my favourite activities. Dude! If only I lived in the States! [getting to DCon one day is on my bucket list, but sadly that trip isn't gonna happen in the next 3yrs].

Good luck getting people to step up for the table and staff every time slot. In case you hadn't noticed, the AL suffered internal conflict. I don't see the bad blood evaporating any time soon. Even when relations were good, getting a full staff was challenging. If needed, I'll make myself available to work the table. I am still fond of AL and many of it's members. No hatred on my end. I choose to move on with our mission.

Odds are I will not be there if they have it. Work is cancelling all vacation till we get a handle on things. That has wiped out any plans that I try to make. We will see but I agree that it will be too big of a risk and expect it to go the way of SDCC. There is not way social distancing can be practiced there.

Thanks!

Greg

not to mention how much money they would lose if they had 25% of the attendees come. that would be worse than cancelling it out rite.

I expect the rest of the year's conventions to be cancelled for exactly that reason. It is one thing to want life to 'open up' and get back to work and be able to live less restrictively. It is an entire other thing to have faith restored in recreational activities that require piling up in massive groups. Not to mention likely guest cancellations (older celebrities will not want to 'meet and greet' a thousand people these days regardless of 'stay at home' order status).

I myself am finally accepting that this years 'con-season' is a wash. More time to prepare for next year I suppose.

Even if Dragon Con happens this year, there will be no parade.

I have heard some speculation that DragonCon will be cancelled, but they are holding out for the threshold where their event insurance policy will kick in.

I have nothing to back this up, but it makes sense. I have a friend that works in event promotions and she said that events that cancel too early can't file a claim.

I had planned for this year to be my first DragonCon, but unfortunately my work situation has made it necessary for me to can all of my 2020 travel plans.

Well, if they do cancel this year it gives me more time to get back in proper shape to be wearing any sort of costume for it. Then again, there may be a resurgence of this crap around then if people aren't careful so I'd say "cancel it just to be safe."

The NC platoon will probably not attend this year. Half of us are active duty and are now pretty much banned from travel, and a few others like myself are firefighters and are on mandatory OT for the foreseeable future. I hope those of you that get to go have a blast, oorah.

Con or no con, I plan to go anyway. Many Dcon people I know plan on doing the same. We don't need an official venue to meet up with old friends and wear a costume.
