The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Odd question, but how much would one expect to pay for a NON-working Grid laptop?

Seen various non-working models on Ebay with people asking anything from £130 - £250?

Seems rather steep for something that doesn't work???

If you think about it, very few of the 'found props' we all covet do much more than a non-working laptop. Most are all just chunks of plastic/metal which have the primary function of looking cool on a shelf.

Personally I have been looking for one and expecting to pay around that much (if only I could find them! Clearly I'm not searching hard enough).

Edit/clarification: I'd pay around that for the 'correct' one even if broken. For a broken other model or "close but not quite", then I wouldn't expect to pay more than $50usd. Of course I would pay more for a working one we could put the sentry program into even if not entirely accurate.

I bought a non-working and not 100% accurate GRID for less than $100 USD. For what that's worth.

Paid about $200 for mine over a decade ago- it boots up, but has no operating system.

OK, its not the one one from the film, but it looks the part.

Planning on gutting it and doing what you did, so it looks like a working prop.

Thats a nice looking one.. still true to the Grid Design with some interesting details. I´m sure, even its not the Screen-used one, it will be a winner on the table ! We found out that the "General convention visitor" will instantly remember the Sentry gun scene and the "Aliens Super Fan" is glad to see a member of the GRID family in real. Enjoy your retro-fitting.. its as tricky as it is worth the effort :-)

Anyone know how the one on screen worked? If that was a program that someone wrote? would be pretty sweet to have that on an orange disc.

Someone did actually write a program for a Grid laptop that mimmicked the sentry gun readouts, if you do a forum search I'm sure you'll find it here somewhere.

I was going to try and work around my GRiD not working by placing a tablet inside the screen frame and then uploading that sentry gun program onto it. I tested it and was able to get it to play on a tablet I had, but decided trying to get a tablet big enough to fill the GRID screen and making it look good was way more work than I wanted. I mean, in the end, I was probably never going to actually turn it on and play it, so my computer just sits around doing nothing. My plan B is easier.....just print out a sentry gun screen image, place that into the frame, light it up and then have the "empty" sound played from an MP3 player on loop.

The complete gun arming sequence might be a bit too complex for my idea, but has anyone tried using a Nextion display instead of the screen on a dead Grid? They can be programmed to show graphics on their own, or they can be slaved to a RPi or an Arduino
