The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

More shaping down.

Lining up the lips with the forehead.

Image

Estimating teeth/lip position. Look like the jaw as a whole is too tall. Will have to bring that chin up a tad.

Image

Narrowing slowly ...

Image

Always drawing guidelines to make sure I don't go to far.

Image

Using my other sculpt for reference. I thought the original's teeth should have come out just a little bit more, so I'm making sure to address that this time.

Little progress ...

Glued the jaw onto the head. Started working out the top gums. The forehead may get shaved down a hair during the final shaping process but it's generally done size-wise. The jaws will also get smaller once whittled down and are proportioned properly.

I want to cast the teeth in resin this time.

Sweet! Love to hear it!

Make sure to post some progress pics.

The foam shavings are annoying, and I'm dreading the sanding that is coming soon.

Started hollowing out the mouth.

Since the last build I've been really wanting to make a hotwire cutter to tackle these larger cutouts.

Anyhoo, here's a saw.

Image

Two angled cuts, and then I thought it'd be nice if I had a cable saw. Instead I used some bicycle brake cable I had.
It was not very comfortable, but it worked. Hollowed more out with the big blade.

Thanks, guys!

Marking references for detail around the gums, jaw, and edge of the rear forehead to the start of the back of the head. Also did some sculpting in those areas. Lightly. This is the part where some areas are best done little-by-little.

Black marker to block out the raised portions on the gums. The butt end of the x-acto works well to push in reference lines and smooth sharp corners.

Even busted out the sandpaper, but I got lucky and had no coarse paper. Which is what I needed. lol, tired.

I don't have any more than 1 picture that shows some decent gum detail, and that pic is from a front angle. There's not too much consistency amongst all the other pictures when it comes to that detail so I'm just taking cues from the one pic I have and estimating.

Image

Also I found a battery operated engraver at Ross which does great for quick raw detail.

Image

Cut these gum donuts out with that engraver.

Image

Pinned on some scrap sheathing left over from the mini-xeno, and mocked up some temporary teeth. As more detail starts to evolve, these other parts help with referencing and placement. There are several moments in building a xeno head that are really exciting and adding the tubing and teeth are definitely one of those moments. Like you can hear it start to hiss at you. :P

Head shaping. Working mostly on the depth around the temples.

Took some dark pics so it's easier to see the contrast.

After this session, I think the very top of the forehead will get shave down a bit. Gums need to be minimized also.

Shaping down the forehead and jaws ...

Going to reshape the top going towards the back. Sloping it downwards. See new thin black reference line.

Looks great!

You need one of these, would be easier on your hands than a brake cable.

^^^ Totally! Was looking at those yesterday. Think I'm going to make my own, since the max width, is only 7 inches.

Thinned the jaw a bit, cut down the head slope, and trimmed the excess off the jaw.

First real pass with some 100 grit sandpaper using a sanding block. I basically push the block away from me with little pressure. 2 or 3 passes and lots of foam will disappear so go easy. The nice thing is that it's fast.

Also started tapering the back of the head.

Dark pic to show smoother surface. Bench light is too bright.

Working on some jaw detail. There's quite a bit of depth here so more will get cut eventually.
