The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

While I've been working on these for some time, I'm just now getting around to painting them....take a look.

I'm trying to paint camo for probably the first time, and trying to get it somewhat screen accurate.

Every picture I've seen of screen used BDU's looks different, so I don't know how far or how close I am. The one on the left was done first and has a grey-ish wash to make the BDU's look worn and weathered...although it came out a bit uneven.

The one on the right is a more recent version and I tried to get the "pattern" closed to the Hot Toys figures. Next step is to give him a wash. I'm doing the BDU'S on all the figures at once, or as close together as I can in the hopes of keeping them uniform in appearance. Once that's done, I'll move on to the armor.

Keep in mind that it's pretty difficult to render a BDU pattern at this scale without the use of stencils or a factory in Asia. :)

That is really awesome. What are you using as your base figures?

I wouldn't stress the BDU intensity too much since it seemed even character to character the level of wear was different. Dietrich's looked nice and new with Vaz's being washed out and gray. The full spectrum was scattered throughout (at least it seemed that way to me)

Thanks Terran, I failed to take that into account about the varied levels of wear.

The base figure I'm using is a GI Joe: Rise of Cobra movie Flint. I was able to get about ten of them from a seller in China, which saved me a ton of money. That was the closest available to the USCM uniform. The only things I changed were the collar and I removed the pockets from the shoulders.

Sheesh....I need to correct that. The base figure I used was Duke.

Anyway, here's another photo of where I'm at now. Just a few more guys need the camo pattern, then comes the same grey wash to tone it down. Bigbisont, I know you said that different uniforms had different levels of wear, but I feel without the grey wash, the uniform colors are too bright as well as all-around wrong looking. The grey wash is the only thing that saves them.

I wish I could have painted a more accurate camo pattern on them.

lol, dude I looked for 45 mins trying to scout out a Flint! Never found him...
You def inspired me though. I did end up getting a cheap 'General Hawk' that seems to share that body and also an unpainted "Dusty" that shares the legs with the field jacket. I don't have a specific plan but I figure one of them is about to become Gorman (either with tucked in shirt or field jacket).

I agree 100% on the wash. Def looks great.

OK, gotta ask: The shin guards? And is there body armor to follow on those guys you didn't paint the bodies of?

I think I may have used some of that recipe to make the Lt. I have in that photo!

Yep, I have body armor....helmets, shoulder lamps, weapons, motion trackers...everything to gear these grunts up. The only thing I am missing is accurate pistols, Gerbers with sheaths and belt tools. There was a guy offering all the stuff found on the HT figures from years back, but I'm not sure if he still offers them. There is also a place called Maurader Gun Runners http://www.marauderinc.com/ that offers their own self-made pulse rifles and flame throwers in 1:18th scale (very cheap and VERY accurate!). I had to cut the lower legs off the figures and whittle the lowers into stubs that could be inserted into the tops of the greaves since those are cast as a solid piece.

The unpainted areas of the upper bodies are indeed left unpainted because those are going to be covered by the armor.

A few more pictures of current work. This is the first fully painted Marine, the only parts that have yet to be added are the bandoliers, helmet and shoulder lamp.

The profile picture is there to give you a better look at one of the custom decals.

The camo scheme on the armor was MUCH easier to copy.

O.k., I finally have my squad of custom Marines finished, the ONLY thing missing is personal graffiti...and I'm just not sure how to approach that. I'm not sure I can paint what could end up as being some pretty small details AND I don't want to overload them with "stuff". I'd have to plan each one out carefully and that might just make my head explode.

So, sitting that aside, I'll post one each day till I get them all.

The first is Sgt. Tilden. Yes, his right leg armor is unpainted other than a coat of OD green, it's supposed to look like that.

That is what Operation Aliens should have looked like! Now I want a Sulaco play set like the G.I. Joe aircraft carrier!

Do you have a story line to go with these Marines?

No...not really. I had planned, like I said, to make a playset/diorama for them, and through that, take some pictures to tell a story, but I need a camera better than the one I currently have to do that.

And my APC from HIYA toys...which has been delayed another three months!

Pvt. Ramirez

This figure is pretty much a stock HT figure, I replaced the head, painted it and the arms to match, removed the gun holster and placed it at his side and placed a Gerber knife and sheath where the holster was, also repainted the grenades. I'll probably switch these out with the same ones I used on all the other figures just so they all match.

Retro, Lifer, thank you. :)
Yeah, Holt seemed to come together pretty nicely and poses well.

Stimpy, the armor came from a guy called "raginspoon". At least that's the name of his site. He molds/casts 1:18th scale (GI Joe) body parts, weapons and other such items. I checked his site a few days ago, I don't think he offers the USCM armor anymore.

Oh, i just assumed you had casted those for some reason. I shot that guy line asking if he is able to make them available again. I think that guy sells on ebay too. I used to see the helmets popping up loose back in the day. Not anymore though...

Somewhere there is another caster that offers a USCM style helmet...but that will do you little good without everything else. That said, I happen to have a small selection of 1:18th USCM gear available, stuff I didn't use, no armor though.

Here is Pfc. Mays.

1) Should I give him a more powerful primary weapon, and let the shotgun be a secondary weapon? I looked up the use of shotguns in todays military, and it seemed they are mostly used as a secondary. But this figure HAS what could be a secondary weapon, in the form of a pistol.

2)Am I drawing this out needlessly by posting a single picture every day?
