The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I don't know if anyone has used that specific make, but FriendlySkies added a video camera to his helmet

That look's promising. I couldn'y see anywhere where it tells you the dimensions of the camera unit though. It looks like the camera has to be hardwired to the recording media. As long as the DVR unit is small enough to fit in a pouch on the back lobster plate then that would be ideal. Otherwise, a wireless camera would be better.

Thanks for posting the link. I might get in touch with them for some measurements.

Cheers

Darren

Probably yeah, but I have asked them for dimensions anyway.

LOL, yeah.

Maybe we should approach one of these companies as a group and get a camera designed specifically for the M1 helmet. With housing made as part of the product. Might get a decent price if enough people committed to buy one. Just an idea.

I also used a similar wireless camera such as the one Friendlyskies installed. Works like a charm. The cameras shown in the first post are obviously way too big for a USCM helmet cam.
Not to mention expensive.

If you decide to go down that route, let me know first. I could certainly do with the work at the moment.

hey guys

I got an email back from the company that Tarim-Rex linked to.

Quote:
Regarding your question all of our helmet cameras are 3 inches long and 21mm in diameter. We do NOT sell wireless helmet cameras. The DVR is 4 X 2 X .5 inches. The wire coming from the helmet camera carries the video, audio and
power to both

I just checked my helmet cam and the camera would fit just inside the diameter of the back cap for a pentax lens which is great and the overall length of my cam is a touch over 3 inches.

However, as we all know, the helmet cam has a curved body so the camera from these guys still wouldnt be a perfect fit. If, however, you drilled out the back of the Pentax lens so that the camera was actually flush to the front of the Pentax lens then I imagine it would fit fine. The other option being to cut an extra hole in the helmet so that when the camera starts to protrude from the housing it goes inside the helmet a little. The first option would be my preference.

Anyway, it looks like this camera could be used with some slight modding to your M1 Helmet camera.

The DVR unit that comes with it is small enough to fit into the little pouches that MAA sells as cigarette pack holders also. So the fact that it is not a wireless camera shouldn't be a problem.

Cheers

Darren

Sorry Gareth, just saw your post. Do you mean by that that you can design a camera that will fit inside the M1 Helmets Cam Housing? If so, why is this the first we are hearing of it ;)

Cheers

Well.
If we decided that we wanted to commission a custom designed camera/recorder solution; perhaphs with a casing designed specifically for the unit identical to the castings currently in use - I would give it a look.

I spent the best part of 18 months a while ago working on a remote security camera design so I'm not without experience.

Why is the first time hearing about it?
Umm, I guess it's just the first time someone ever mentioned looking to get it commissioned. :D

I'd love to have the time and money to just do it on the side as a project and then offer it to everyone but unfortunatly I haven't.
But if it were a serious job, with enough interest I might be able to afford to. :D
