The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Nothing major here, just looking for some confirmation.
Someone (sorry, forgot who) had once questioned if the Colony flashlight was painted BB or OD. I never really thought about it, but based on this pic it looks like the case.

I thought it might be a trick of the light, but I just noticed these in the background on the table of this screen shot.

The housings certainly looks OD on screen (meaning likely BB in real life) with the selector switch the unpainted bare black (or just looks black in shadows?)

-Anyone have better screen grabs of the light and its color?

-Also what are the silver 'toppers' on them in this pic?
**EDIT: Never mind about the 'toppers' question. I do recall Harry's website explaining the lamps were replaced in some scenes in favor of a 12v reflector lamp. That must be what they looked like when not lit.**

-These were 'colony' flashlights, right? I seem to recall Ripley finding one laying around while exploring the complex, but I may be mistaken. If they were colony items, why are they painted to match the military equipment?! (rhetorical question. I know the answer is probably the prop guy got carried away).

-If I am mistaken and they are military equipment, does anyone recall if the lights were seen on the Sulaco, APC, or Dropship prior to the sweep?

I remember seeing one in operations when the camera was panning through while catching up with the two company guys. I thought about taking a screen grab of it but then I got distracted by the tool box which I ended up starting a thread about.

Moosh posted some screen grabs of that same time frame...maybe there's a picture of it in there?

Found it!

Althought it (the flashlight) looks like it's unaltered?

I didn't even realise that there were 'military' painted flashlights! Just goes to show! It's often referred to as the 'Colony Light'... But perhaps they were just general purpose lights used by civilian and military personnel? I can't recall whether Bishop is carrying his when he first parks and leaves the APC outside the SOUTH lock?

While looking for something else, I stumbled upon this:

When the Jorden family ventured out, they of course brought the colony lights with them and check out the color scheme! Is that an orange and white pattern paint job?

Sure seems like we have 3 paint schemes on this prop

An orange and white one could be a great colony 'toolbox' addition. Just saying...

To me it looks like hazard-tape around at least one end. Hard to tell though.

As I recall with the colony light, at least one end is a bit flimsy and they are made of fairly brittle stuff... It could be that the hazard tape kept them a bit more secure as well as adding a bit of an 'industrial' edge...

Sure looks like it. Also now that you guys mentioned it, it does look like the front was just taped up above.

Time to rewatch the movie to make sure!

I think someone said they were actually Wierzbowski's and/or Crowe's greaves that were repainted yellow (remember the hive scene was actually filmed first, so they were all done with their sets very early on).

In this thread, viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9268&hilit=collectors+wierzbowski , "SgtTony" posted this picture of Ski's armor when offered to him for sale. Take note on the left, you see the greaves are still yellow.

EDIT:
and here is a link citing Crowe's to have also been repainted. Via the "propstore", they had Crowe's grives which have had large portions of the paint scraped off, but the remnants of both camo and yellow remain.

Here is another image that indicates the flashlights were painted. It almost looks like it just is wrapped in OD tape, but the other continuity of bishop with the light shows the color is all over, not just tape. Either way, the one he carried does not appear to be black.

There are actually quite a few companies that made these. Some are 4, 5, or 6 function, and some have 'ribbed' ends instead of smooth, but they are all nearly identical.

The "GE" and "Uniross" versions have the ribbed ends. Retrogarde recently snagged a 3rd brand that I can't remember at the moment.
"Brinkmann" and "Signal" brand lights have the smooth ends.

Nice to here "T-Lite" is another brand. I wonder how many other companies were doing these things!? There are apparently lots of options.

Mine was a Uniross and while the torch has the ribbed ends, the photo on the box shows smooth ends. Odd that...

For what it's worth, here's a shot of tape over the end of Ripley's flashlight during the Ops assault scene

The 4 in 1 light I have always felt weak to me, as in, it felt like it was going to fall apart at any moment. Maybe the tape is there to either A) keep the thing from falling apart or B) keep the batteries from falling out.
