The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

For the record folks Humbrol 170 is (or was) called 'Brown Bess'.

I see it quoted as 'Bess Brown' all the time, quite a lot recently too - but to me it reads like 'Rifle Pulse' or 'Thrower Flame'. There's no such paint as Bess Brown.

Don't believe me? Try typing Bess Brown into Google and see what happens! ;)

Ha - in the german army it´s the same.

everything is named backwards with a "," between.
like "Kampfstiefel, schwarz" (boot, black)

But the best is our ZDV (hard to translate - it´s something like the handbook /manual for all soldiers in german army)

The best two orders are:

"if you reach the top of a tree, you have to stop climbing by yourself"

and

"if you are standing in water and it is reaches your chest, you have to start swimming by your self!

no lie...

I love it! That´s why i am an USCM in my freetime

My last post was slightly tongue - in - cheek. However, the fifth image made me feel proud and was wondering if anyone else noticed it.

Of course Harry is correct. He's my hero!! :D

It is Humbrol 170 but I believe they no longer make it.

A bunch of the marine guys cornered the market in this not long before the NSC event and I'm not sure if there is any left anywhere.

I just recently found two tins from a hobby shop
in the UK.

It was their last two tins and the owner told me
he would write to me when more comes in.

I'm guessing that is an email I will never recieve.
<span style="color:gray;font-family:century gothic;font-size:small;]Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing.

"Humbrol 14ml Enamel 186 Matt Brown Bess"

Does anyone know why it's number is 183 and not 170?

So Sidewinder,

That`s not brown bess then? How much is it off from you experiance?

Seems strange having the same name on two different colours IMHO.

I`ve just ordered some along with some other colours I needed anyway.Though I don`t have a "correct" brown Bess to compare this one with,so any help would be usefull :D

Hi all

Just found this web site with paint conversion numbers for Vallejo Model Color : www.creativemodels.net/hu...ersion.htm

going by their where to get it chart there are loads of dealers, so might be quite good if anyone with a tin of 170 could go and check against this stuff and see.

Its way off, #186 is totally brown man.

However I just got some Humbrol Authentic Colour MC6 Brown Bess - this is a #170 equivalent apparently. We shall see, though I don't have any 'proper' #170 to compare it with.

Also Revell # 46 is apparently a #170 equivalent...?

Got to the cross reference page via the humbrol wikipedia entry. Lookie here:

{ Pug50 - the original site domain is blacklisted for malware. I looked it up in a VM and checked the HTML. Safe mirror here:

says that Humbrol 170 Brown Bess is "RAL 7013". So I looked that up, found this:

http://www.easyrgb.com/reference.php

run it through the calc and made the pic below. Not too bad. Any input appreciated, since I don't really have any Brown Bess to compare it to...

So Brown Bess is most similar to RAL 7013 which is RGB 84.59 79.72 65.72 (decimal) which is approximately #555042 in HTML Hex notation.

Additionally, the colour table also confirms that Revell 046 Nato Olive Matt is a good match for Brown Bess.

After a recent 'interesting' conversation on FB about 170 and the so called ral number equivalent, I've been doing some research and found this, it's interesting, I have no idea if it is true but.....

Interesting, thanks for posting that Graham.

I've ordered a jar and I'll test it against something original from the film that was painted in the Brown Bess colour like the Smart Gun headset, Ripley's data disc, shoulder lamp etc. and will let you know.

I can't say when I can get this done as everything is in storage but I'm sure I can access it relatively easily. Give me a couple of weeks though at least.
