The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Thanks guys! Kinda pales in comparison to the 3 other builds that were just posted/updated since yesterday, but I like it! It really brings the room together.

Now for a little gun-porn...Short of one of those riot guns that had a millisecond of screen time, I've just about wrapped up my 'gun collection'. (At least my Aliens weapon collection)

Amazing collection!
Now you only need a sharp stick and a deck of cards.

I finally made a move on a vest and I think I scored pretty big.

It is not technically correct, and it is not 'complete' (no arm, no arm mount either) but I did secure myself a cinaproducts steadicam vest!

Best I can tell from the very limited data out there, this is the "Model II". I think this is a little smaller and and has less features (like no ability to add quick release) than the model 3. However for the price and for the looks (and with some paint/additions) it should fill my needs just fine!

Thanks, I'm digging it.

Considering this seems to be the 'little brother' of the actual one, I was pretty nervous about how it would sit on my less than svelte frame. I actually plan to let my little brother rock this at dragoncon and he is a fair bit bigger than me, but i think it will work out just fine. The strap settings are near their 'max', but I/we should be OK.

It is coming along after a weekend of 'resolve' (cleaner), sanding, and painting.

The place it lacks the most is in the back. Lots of work to do there if I want to simulate screen accurate.

Now for some mild controversy. (its been a while since I stirred this pot! )
With all due respect to the numerous chest plate builders out there, I think many run a bit big for my preference.

Many believe, "The plate covered most of Vaz's body, and she looked good, so a big plate just looks 'right'", and that is perfectly understandable.
I fully respect this very popular approach toward the plate.

However, Vaz was 5'2" and she probably weighed 120lbs even 'bulked up'. She was tiny.
If I make a plate scaled to cover my 240lb body, I just think it will be pretty silly. So I have chosen to scratch build a plate and scale it for how it looked on Drake. Drake was a near 6ft guy who was no small-fry.

As you can see, it only appears be just a bit bigger than his head.

So I have been through about 4 versions of this (all made from cardboard), and am finally happy with my shape and overall size

(even now, I think it is a bit wide, but those sidewalls are a bit flared out and I can fix that when I fiberglass it.)

So now that I have my shape, it is just about time to fiberglass it!

Looks great and I assume your right about the chest plate not being "full size" for Marines like Drake.

Some folks prefer absolute screen accuracy, and I'm fine with that. However, I think it's plausible that the USCM would stock larger plates for larger Marines (just like real-life body armor - even plates - comes in different sizes).

In the end, it's your build and I say build it the way you want. Nice work!

I feel your pain on the chest plate! Ive been slugging away on my version for ages now and only just got to a point where I'm totally happy with the size and shape. Its a tricky prop to replicate thats for sure.

Perhaps Adam can help here as the chest plate is connected to the operators vest so apart from the neck size we would have another reference when it comes to the size.
Fully agree that's a difficult build. Looking at other builds this shouldn’t stop us.

To use a poker term, I am pretty "pot committed" at this stage on my current template and feel pretty good about it.
I worried it was still 'too big' even though I know it is smaller than many out there, but the more I think about it, it is better to error on the side of 'too big' so I guess I will just see how it looks when fully glassed up. Hopefully it looks good.

Of course I welcome continued discussion on the topic. As far as further reference for size, this is the only pic I am aware of that shows both Drake and Vaz, straight on, in the same frame.
Attachment:
Drake and vaz.jpg
Drake and vaz.jpg [ 476.14 KiB | Viewed 11277 times ]

Some distortion comes from the fact drake a bit further away, but still. When I look at this picture I can't help but wonder if the plates were even pulled from the same mold. If they were scratch built independently, they may actually be different sizes?

I mean, it just looks sooooo much smaller on drake than it does on Vaz.
Of course it could just be an optical illusion because Drake has so much more padding under it (the vest plus another layer). Or as I first stated and currently am banking on, it could simply be the fact that Jeanette is so tiny.

Other reference points would be the chin and the mouth.
In the last picture the the straps come out of the plate in about the same angle which could indicate that
Vaz plate was smaller than Drake’s.

If you compare the SG headset size of each one to their plate size the ration indicates that
Dake’s plate is minimal larger.

Well, I cranked out 4 so far (I always like making multiples at once so that hopefully at least one will actually end up 'good'!)

Basic 'pep' work on to shapes cut from black poster-board/cardstock.
Got them all trimmed up and rough sanding done. The next step is filler, primer, and more sanding before paint.

I actually need at least 2 of them to turn out well. I need to give one to my little brother so he can use it at DragonCon this year.
(little punk insists on having his own graffiti and doesnt want to use 'mine', yet he has no problem borrowing my smartgun! Go figure...)

I'm going to go with the theory that Vaz's plate IS much bigger just to accommodate the graffiti.

Yeah, it really does look like Drake's plate is much smaller, but then again like you said it could just be an optical illusion due to the large difference in their size and their distance from the camera.

Otherwise, really nice work! Looking forward to seeing the final project!

Even though I've not finish the chest plates, I feel good enough with my foundation to turn my sites to the arm, which I will be scratch building.
I wont be machining anything or going to insane lengths to recreate the 3A. I won't be recreating the 6x spring system it uses nor the pullies that connect them. I just want something that looks good at a glance, so I think getting the overall size correct with accurate "covers" are key to pulling that off.

I have tried and hunted and searched to get accurate dimensions on the 3A arm, but failed at all turns. So i am going to do this the hard way!!!

I found this random picture online. This is far from a perfect perspective, but this does provide some scale. After a relatively brief online hunt, I have ID'd the case as a Pelican iM3100.
***NOT MY ARM! Just a random several year old 'for sale' thread image via 'google' search***.
Attachment:
On Pelican iM3100 case 40 x 16.5 inches.jpg
On Pelican iM3100 case 40 x 16.5 inches.jpg [ 95.25 KiB | Viewed 11125 times ]

So...I did what any sane person would do. I cut a 1:1 scale template of the case with the dimensions easily found online! I will now be using it as reference when building a cardboard arm that will become the templates for my metal brackets.

Doesn't Adam have an arm that he can give you dimensions from?

The perspective from that pict makes it very difficult.

Yes, I have asked him. He said he would get back to me, but I guess he is pretty busy. If he comes through, great. If not I think I swing this. The perspective makes it tough, but it is not impossible. Known dimensions of case and the shadows combined with screen grabs should get me "close enough".

Of course if anyone comes through with actual dimensions, be they Adam or anyone else, I would be extremely grateful!!!
