The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Now I know little to nothing about sound boards and programming electrical boogalaboos, but I do know that lightsaber builders have some extremely small boards, a lot with micro SD cards. Majenko, have you examined boards like the Petite Crouton by Plector Labs, or the Igniter Mini or Spark by Naigon? Just a thought as those guys know a lot about sound boards that control LEDs and sounds, and special effects.

Dang, now I want to build another Pulse Rifle!!! Thanks a lot guys!!

Looking forward to your kit for a M56A2 Smart Gun Majenko.
The M56A2 does have more space so a larger speaker and enough battery power shouldn't be an issue.

Wanted to chime in here, having had some experience with this. It took me forever to find a powered speaker that was a) small enough to fit in the ammo drum and b) powerful enough to be heard and to not overdrive or distort. I have a JVC iPod/phone speaker currently that gets the job done, but it still doesn't do justice to what Juliet should sound like.

Let's face it - that M56 should ROAR!

I am currently planning on mirroring Tony B.'s idea and putting a portable amp in a hip pouch. Hopefully that will give my baby the voice she deserves.

The problem I have found with amplifiers is big amplifier = big batteries.

I have a mono 40W amplifier chip that I often work with. In fact, a pair of them make up my home stereo system. They are reasonably small (32 pin TQFP), and the full board with all the support components is 50mm square (could be shrunk a little), but the problem is they need at least 10V, preferably nearer 20V to operate properly. And of course high current (>3A) with it, so you need big batteries that can provide enough punch. Ideally 8 lithium ion batteries in a 4S2P arrangement to give around 14V. That of course is a lot of battery, and has associated charging issues around it. 3S2P would just about do, which is better, but would limit the overall volume you could get from it.

One day I will find the perfect amplifier chip for these projects... I have even looked at DACs with a built in amplifier, but they tend to be over complex for the job, and hence over priced.

For me a speaker in the M56 drum would mean either modifications (less BBs ...) or no AirSoft functions.
But there are alternatives e.g. the tube below the M56A2, where the counter weights have been placed.

The Battery is of cause something to consider.
Looking at AirSoft/Racing Accus that can be solved.
Two examples:
GM Power Pack 12 V 3600 mAh Measurements: L 235 mm W 52 mm H 25 mm
Ansmann Racing LiPo Akku 11.1V 3800mAh 30C Hardcase Measurements: L 138 x W 46 x H 25 mm

@Outcry27: Agreed! The M56 should ROAR!
The best way for that kind of volume might by a wireless transmitter/SFX Trigger to a large external speaker.

That is an interesting idea. A wireless transmitter.

I may employ this in my kit. Recommendations? It would need to be dependable and not get interference from other devices at a busy Con.

Well, you could use a normal FM transmitter like you'd plug into your MP3 player to listen to it on the car stereo... Could be prone to interference, but does give you a very wide choice of frequencies to use, so if you can find a dead spot in the FM band you can usually get it quite good - and the distance would be low.

Hmm..what about Bluetooth? Say an adapter for the soundboard (connection via 3.5 mm audio cable) and transmitted via Bluetooth 3.0 to an external Bluetooth speaker. Maybe less risk of interference?

The problem there is getting something that you can pair your bluetooth speaker to. All the sound input devices I know of are "slave" devices, like headsets, microphones, etc, which require an active host device to pair with in order to work. You'd basically need a bluetooth audio device in the gun paired with a computer (or maybe a phone?) with a second bluetooth audio device (speaker) also paired with the computer. You'd then need to run some software of some form to pipe audio through from one device to another.

Hmm...might not need a wireless. I managed to fit an entire Aker 1505 into my Matrix PR. It was never intended to be an functioning Airsoft gun so I removed a little interior plastic and the metal mid cap mag. Just need to replace the Matrix digital counter circuit with the Makenko all in one, connect a 3.5 mm cable to the mic, wire in the trigger and I think it should be ready to roll.

You can get a bluetooth TRANSMITER that will connect to the sound board just fine. Then you can have any size bluetooth speaker in a ammo pouch hanging off your waist. This is what I am in the process of doing with my resin Spulse. The only downside slight delay ms from trigger pull to sound.

Rimwar, it's not odd to have the sound coming from somewhere other than the gun itself? Or do you wear the pouch in the front and fire from the hip?

I'm liking your solution, I just can't quite wrap my head around the direction of the sound.

One could use Bluetooth transmitter with a 3.5m Audio connector, which could be connected to a PR/M56 sound board.
There are "small" Bluetooth speaker e.g. JBL "Flip 2", "Charge" or fro Sound2Go etc.

The plus for such a Bluetooth option would be that you could have a sound area (one small near or in the PR/M56) and
multiple others nearby with this much louder set up it would be so odd hearing the sound not from the expected source.

Personally I would prefer all on/in the prop so you could move outdoor without the dependency to anything external.
For a show/performance/Alien Encounter type event one might want to go for more volume.

Retro your kinda correct. With the speaker in a void inside a airsoft gun it's still largely directional. In a resin Spulse the just isn't sufficient space for a decent sized speaker so in a belt pouch is the next best option. Will post a pic later haven't mounted it yet but will get the idea.

See pic below compared to the max size I could find of a speaker to fit in the resin well. It's a Logitech Bluetooth speaker and the test pouch beside it.

Ok, mad scrabble time now ;)

I have 4 boards ready to go: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191326488042 - first come first served. I will have more next week, I need to order some more components (just need to get an order together large enough for free postage from one supplier), so if you miss out don't worry, you can get one next week.

Majenko don't forget that you should normally only post sales posts in our 'Base PX' sales section.

Also I've moved this thread into the correct Airsoft section.

Could you make a M56 Smart Gun version of this board?

E.g. 2400, 295, 1200 at start instead of 95 and M56 sound instead of PR sound.
And a description how to use the different firing mode switches e.g. different sounds.
It should drive an external (aktive) speaker >6W (I guess using LINE out should work, right?

Majenko, do you know if your pulse rifle boards will fit the HCG shrouds? I am looking for a board but do not want to cut/modify the aluminum shrouds.

Thanks,
Mike

That's the kind of thing I'm intending for the V3 modular system.

I know people have used it with the HCG, but I don't know if they needed to modify it or not. Here's some measurements for you:

The board size is 50mm x 32mm. The display is 9.5mm from the right, 8mm from the top, 15.5mm from the left and 6.8mm from the bottom.
