Right...

Another possible area of discussion... It may have been covered before... If it has, I apologise...

Just before his death, Drake is the rearguard with Vasquez covering the chaotic withdrawal of the remaining marines... Having already lost Dietrich, Frost, Crowe, Wierzbowski and Apone...

So as his Smart Gun ammo dries up, he (very skilfully) sheds his Smart Gun rig and switches to an Incinerator he's been carrying slung...

So I'm sure he didn't deploy with one... I therefore presume he's picked one up... Perhaps one from Dietrich (unlikely as it was slung and she was carried off... If it was torn from her by her captors, the sling would have been ripped apart)... So that leaves either Wierzbowski's unit or Frost's (which may have been dropped by Apone)...?

Thoughts...?

I am firmly in the camp that he picked it up. I never understood the rush to call it a continuity error or a hidden sidearm/backup weapon when it was so easily explained by just picking it up on the fly. In this thread I argue heavily not only the plausibility, but in my opinion likelihood

I completely agree with you bigbisont... There's no way a smart gunner could DEPLOY with a full size weapon like an incinerator as a secondary weapon... To be honest, even Hicks was a stretch carrying the shotgun... Great for the story but Jesus Christ... With a Pulse Rifle and armour... That was heavy...

Anyway there are NO shots of Drake with it before the hive withdrawal... So he could only have picked it up...

I completely agree with your theory in the linked thread.

I always thought he was a robomarine and it was stashed away in his robo-back scabbard. I could be wrong though.

I don't have any idea how 'canon it could be considered, but the screenplay in the copy I have depicts Draske as having picked up as discarded incinerator. Nothing said about who's it was though!

Now... We all know the "it's a film" carries absolutely no weight here. It's THE film. ;-)

CrashDown - What is the wording from the screen play say? Out of interest...

I appreciate the screenplay describes him picking it up.

I also appreciate it is a case of "now you don't see it, now you do" in the film itself, as it is definitely not there during the "collect all magazines" sequence.

However I have a great deal of difficulty believing that-

1) Drake would take the time to pick up a secondary weapon in the heat of falling back while hosing everything in sight that wasn't human and,

2) Is it possible for a smartgunner to kneel down and pick something up off the floor easily and quickly enough to risk doing it while trying to hold off an assault? :?

For me it's just one of those "movie cheats" in which we are supposed to believe he had it slung across his back out of sight the entire time. Much like in most 80s action films- endless rounds of ammo so that the heroes never have to reload.

But this film is hardly about people who never have to reload... They've never got enough ammo...

I know it's all going off on sub level 3... and (with all incinerator operatives KO'd) the SG operators are the only two giving meaningful fire support (Hick's shotgun is personal defence only really)... But the screen play makes sense... If he felt he had enough time to pick up something useful, and he judged it right, then fine... It's consistent with the way it's slung over his shoulder... And a full time professional SG operative would be capable and flexible with the kit...

Each to their own... I'm content with the screen play hint and bigbisont's theory...

Further to the above - bigbisont - the table in your link is awesome so thanks! Just on the subject of Ski and Crowe and a possible swap of weapons... (Crowe has a sidearm and Ski is asked for a mag by Apone)...

As Apone asks Ski to give up a magazine... He asks both Ski and Crowe if I remember correctly? Does this indicate that the incinerator operators also carried a single magazine? Probably just another inconsistency...

The belt tools I like to think of as spare batteries for the squad weapons... I.e. the smart gun...

It's not unthinkable that incinerators are unusual weapons to deploy with... And so everyone may have carried a mag for a PR (?). They may have deployed flame units as a direct result of Ripley's intel on the alien and acid for blood... Etc... A flame unit isn't exactly a precision weapon for going to a colony that (should) be full of civvies...

Thanks. Actually this popping up has reminded me I hadn't updated that chart in almost a year. I have gone back in to insert the most current version. (most of the changes are to knife accessories and a categorization tweak). But it is updated now is the point.

The discussion thread you did has made my mind up for my own CM kit impression... Very much based on Crowe... Pulse Rifle armed... VP70 sidearm in standard quilted holster on right hip... Both types of hero pouch... Long sleeves on my SPAT BDUs... Grenades on both straps (unlike Crowe)... Original Pulsemeter... Knife on belt (I'm still looking for a night raider)...

Nice.

Both are plausible. For point 1: If there were a momentary lapse in available targets, I can see him taking a few seconds to pick up a dropped weapon he had stepped over. He was likely acutely aware of his ammunition limitations, and developing a backup plan while watching your ammo counter fall lower and lower is believable. If you want to read too much into it (because we never do that around here), Drake barely misses a beat between the M56 stopping firing, "Shit!," and ejecting the rig and readying the flame unit. Almost as though he was prepared for it.

And point 2: I've worn the rig a couple times, and I've spent an extended period of time around a Marine wearing the smartgun rig. While clearly no expert, I feel I have a fairly good idea of the range of mobility allowed and what you can and can not do while strapped in. The left arm is relatively free. The spring arm holds the weight pretty well, mostly just needing to be stabilized. I could imagine taking a large step backward with the right foot, and being able to stoop down enough to grab a weapon on the ground with the left hand while walking backwards. Particularly if the weapon was not flat on the ground, but possibly propped up against something, as the "hive" environment they were in was hardly barren terrain.

I can second the comment to point 2.
Yes, it is possible. It's not lightning fast picking up items while carrying a M56,
but what option do you have when you are quickly running out of rounds.

As a Marine, we absolutely never leave weapons sitting around. If your buddy just got ate by a bug, and dropped his weapon, you'd pick it up and sling it.

This is the sort of behavior that it beaten into you, literally, since bootcamp.

If anyone here has seen "We Were Soldiers", you should note the pile of weapons and pile of canteens that accumulated as the battle progressed.
