The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I was flicking through my Directors Cut DVD the other day (we haven't got a Blue Ray) and I went through some pictures of the Hive... I didn't realise how horrific many of the dead colonists were... And how much of the hive we didn't really see in any detail... In the movie itself, we only see fleeting glances...

In fact, it seems we don't see all of the prop corpses in the movie...

I tried some screen shots but they came out a bit ropey. It's a gruesome subject but is there a more definitive set if screen images anywhere?

Regards,

2-1-6

I'm not sure where you can find a lot of hive images.

I do remember the novelisation mentioned several colonists appeared to have had limbs snapped when cocooned in order to fit better.

I've got a few images on the old DVD I have... A collection of stills and some concept art... I definitely can't see a couple of the colonists in the film... At least I don't think so... This included a male colonist suspended face down from what appeared to be the ceiling... All in grotesque poses and in varying states of decay... I'll see if I can get some better quality screen captures...

Like I say... A morbid fleeting fascination with this part of the detail from the movie... And not intended to be in bad taste...

I also remember the description from the novelization and it seemed much more horrifying to me than the actual scenes of the movie. I also gotta admit I'd be interested in seeing some more lit images. Now that I am wrapping up my 1/6th squad I think the natural progression is "background". Its only a matter of time till I want to create some colonists (and I probably wont be going for the 'alive and happy' look... :? )

Wasn't a lot of the hive left intact and found by the crew for the batman film some years later? There must be some decent lit images around... Somewhere...

Only two pics I actually have.

One features prominently in the movie - IIRC the one Apone first sees, the other shows a chestburster emerging from what appears to be a badly injured host, looks to me like an eye's missing!

I haven't found a pic of the other featured victim (with arm against top of head).

Hi all - I have some different shots - ill see what I can do to screen capture them on my laptop tomorrow... These shots aren't victims I recall seeing in the movie...

CompanyMan - Is your first shot above actually 'Mary' post incinerator?

Here is one of the images... I'm not sure how well it will show up on here... its a male colonist who appears to be suspended from the ceiling... I can't recall seeing this one in the movie... The quality is poor as a screen capture from my DVD on my laptop... I'm not sure what more I can do to improve the quality... the shot quality is poor anyway...

Here is another image... I can't decide whether this is an actual photo or a more detailed concept drawing... there are other images of the hive but they appear to be production shots and of very poor quality... some so bad I can't actually make out what the shot is supposed to actually show...

There are also some interesting close ups of the make up applied to Mark Rolston showing the horrific damage caused by the acid splash from the Xeno that Vasquez blasts with her Smart Gun... The damage is fairly conclusive that there is no way Drake was going to make it out... I hadn't seen these before... I assume many of the old school on this site already has but if someone did want to see them, I'll post them up here...

The makeup shot of Mark Rolston was published in the Aliens movie magazine as well as the Leading Edge game, and yet I never really noticed how horrific it was until the other day. I wish it had gotten a touch more screen time, but Cameron knew what he was doing.

I suspect it could be, apart from the fact that the 'burster appears practically undamaged, and the making-of seems to indicate the puppet was pretty much toast. Difficult to tell as she was still on fire onscreen when the warrior attack started.

However, as Ripley was headed through roughly the same area towards Newt, could it have been originally intended for her to pass the ambush site?

A lot of the concepts do seem to show a serious level of decomposition, maybe in original drafts the Sulaco's journey was to take longer?

One part of the excellent set design is that in several places you can see shapes that appear to human, but as they become clearer, it's just part of the hive walls.

Could Cameron have intended to indicate that the aliens ate bodies after the chestbursters had been born? After all the movies we still know little of nutritional requirements.

In the aliens comic series labyrinth . The aliens ripped the arms and legs off victim , to help the host from escaping . Pretty gross . In AVPR and alien warrior is seen feeding on a corpse with its double jaws . So maybee aliens feed on good ol flesh . Who knows

CompanyMan - I recall there were two chest burster animated puppets for the film so this could be a second with a 'pose' for some kind of shot... The colonist appears to be in the same position 'Mary' was... So it could be... Then again, I'd imagine that part of the set was pretty much destroyed with the flamethrower...

I tell you what though... With the decaying remains of perhaps 140-150 colonists cocooned in the walls, on reflection, the marines would perhaps have smelled death well before get got down to sub level
3... Grim stuff.

The timeline was never meant to be analysed as much as we do here on this forum... But how long did it take the SULACO to get to LV-426... How long had the colonists been able to hold on? In the franchise, a facehugger may stay attached for some time... Perhaps up to 24 hours? Then a chest burster may emerge quickly in up to 24 hours from there or quicker... So unless the lack of a threat and inaction and restraint of a host enables a chest burster to incubate longer and develop and mature more... Was it that 'Mary', the colonist the marines see die was only captured and impregnated a matter of days (or hours) before the arrival of the USCM?

Dialogue that can be barely heard in the background in the hypersleep chamber indicated flight time had been three weeks. It may have been up to a week prep time, but Gorman's briefing shows it was a rush job, probably days, or even hours, from the green light.

Hadley's probably issued weekly status reports, so from going dark to concern at Colonial Administration could have been anything from a few days to a couple of weeks.

This gives us anywhere from five to ten weeks.

When the aliens over-ran the colony, there could well have been a few colonists that escaped the complex, only to be hunted down over the next few weeks.

Given chestburster gestation times, I think that had Mary evaded capture for just one more day, she may have been rescued.

Yup, general consensus is that 'Mary' is the unluckiest woman in the galaxy...

That pic of Mary might be the continuity picture used in-between the animatronic shot of the burster dying (when it slumps down) and a stand-in burster for the longer shots.

I have no proof they did it that way but I know I wouldn't want to to have the latex burning off the puppet and showing all the workings on camera.

Just watched a part of the movie again and you can see the male suspended upside down behind Hudson as he first walks into the part of the Hive with all the bodies... Just before it cuts to Apone saying "Holy Sh...."

I'm still blown away by the outstanding set work done on this movie. It's such a shame that the 'nest' in Alien Resurrection was such crap.

It's such a pity there aren't decent photos of all parts of the hive... I'm sure it was bursting with detail that was never seen...
