The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

The dice are showing two ones, known as snake eyes, meaning bad luck.

Guess Trevor did it as he knew Bowski was going to snuff it? :)

I'm going to lean toward "no", but I'm not sure what color/graphic I'm looking for.
I just scrolled through the DVD I leave at work (just in case of such emergencies!) and snapped some shots. Do you have a pic of the supposed "toxic"? Is it a color or size that could still be present? This pic isnt super duper clear, but I don't see where it could be.

Veeeerry interesting. Well, the medlab scene from the first pic I posted I think is the best "bright" view of it (rest of movie is all pretty dark). Watching it over and over again I do think something might be there but its just a dark gray blur on top of a slightly darker gray/black. This may require the ol' bluRay investigation this weekend!

Shots of the kanji on either side of the sun on Dietrich's Samurai headband/hand wrap. In Sharpie are "corrected versions" and translations from a friend of mine from Hong Kong. I think this pretty clearly shows what Cynthia wrote and what she might have meant to write.

Just watched the Blu-Ray... verdict is in.

100% CONFIRMED. The Vinyle above Hicks' "cup" absolutely undoubtedly says "NON-TOXIC". I can't get clean screen grab of it, but when Frost says "Yo Hicks" in the medlab (prior to discovering Newt) and Hicks walks over to look at the tracker screen, its clear as day on the Blu Ray. On the DVD not so much, but BluRay shows it pretty clear when you know what your looking for.

Sweet man. So as a Dietrich nut, any clue what is on her bag? For some reason I thought it was just the red cross, but the pre-filming polaroids dont show anything at all. This grab from the "reference shot" thread showed something that could be more interesting. ...or more boring (if its just weathering 'crud' they added).

Image

Anyone know for sure what is on Dietrich's bag and/or have a better pic of it?

The band around Dietrich's hand certainly does appear to be a Japanese hachimaki judging by the rising sun emblem next to the kanji characters in both pics. One thing that's confusing to me is that the rising sun is to the left of each kanji in relation to her hand position... :?: That said, it's possible she used more than one hachimaki wrapping during filming, because normally the kanji would either be written together, or on either side of the rising sun emblem. Look closely and you'll see what I mean.

The kanji 信 (shin, meaning fidelity, faith, sincerity, etc. in Japanese) that your friend identified is clear as day, however the other one isn't, especially the inside part. Judging by the position of her hand and the direction of the character, to be 正 (sei, meaning righteousness in Japanese), the character would have to have been written sideways by the looks of it. I searched but couldn't find any Japanese words in the dictionary with both 信 and 正 combined.

It looks to me to be either 風 (as in 神風 = kamikaze) or possibly 用, which I think is probably what it is. The combined characters 信用 (shin-yoh) is a Japanese word for confidence, trust, faith, etc., which might fit the bill nicely in Dietrich's case. I did also find 風信 (fuushin, which means news or wind direction... not likely! :)

Unless somebody else beats me to it I'll try to look for another shot of it. Maybe in the scene where she's just finished examining Newt it might reveal a clear enough view of it to make a positive ID with Blu-ray resolution.

Till then, my best guess would be: 信用 based on what's visible in the pics.

Anyway nice pics, and great job identifying that one character for certain!

You thought right-

It's just a red cross. This is from the BTS disc of the Quadrilogy- a screenshot of what must be a rehearsal of entering the colony.

You're right that the cross isn't in the Polaroid continuity pic:

I guess it was added after the pic was taken.

Annnnnnnnnd... anyone else think that her bag (along with Frost's) is NOT an S6 respirator sack? Because I sure don't think it is.

It is not.

Respirator bag is used by Ripley gearing up at the end.

I am 99% percent sure these are simrad rangefinder bags.

There was someone on the RPF selling a rangefinder and bag a few years back.

Recently, I got dimensions of a rangefinder for my bag build..... and some OD 3/4in camlocks on the way.

Some recent Blu-ray searching turned up a few more detail pics of Vasquez, including her gold crucifix & chain, the Sharpie penned "skull" graphic on her tank top, and previously unseen "VIVA" finger tats (look like they were cut into her fingers). Posted here for your viewing pleasure/reference.

Outstanding! I love when little details like those knuckle tats have been staring us in the face for nearly thirty years yet we're only just seeing them now.

Absolutely! Looks like Jenette held her hand up for a moment in that scene just to show them off, too. I was trying to get a good shot of Hudson's barbed wire & skull tat and just happened to spot something on her fingers while I was advancing frames. Never knew they were there because she wore gloves through most of the film, and without HDTV & Blu-ray they'd be pretty easy to miss!

Her backstory involves being in the USCM as part of a prison early release program, so, murder may be it.

I seem to recall when I mentioned the teardrop tattoo in the context of being a murder/killing mark. Someone also commented it is also used if a gang member is imprisoned when a fellow member is killed and they are unable to attend the funeral!
