The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Jesse,

Did you ever do the additional photos with the three main paints in the center (mentioned in your earlier post mid-way on page 1)? Just curious.

Thanks again for this. :)

I got pretty flippin' busy with work and with cleaning out and re-organizing the Hi-Impact Secret Laboratory (i.e. our garage) with my roomate and the rest of the gang, so I haven't had a chance yet. Also, I really need sunshine to do the outdoor shots, and I haven't been getting home lately until dusk or dark

Sometime soon though! Possibly this weekend (if it doesn't rain again...)

Well, I've never built or painted a PR, but had an idea.

Has anyone ever tried mixing different paints?

Maybe 2 parts TXF51 with 1 part A999 would be a good place to start?

Just a suggestion. I don't know the chemistry involved or anything so feel free to laugh at me if it's a ridiculous idea.

From eyeballing the comparison pic, I'd have to say the TXF51 is the closest to the HBB.

If A999 is incompatible with the TXF51, you could always mix other paints from outside the group pictured here that are acrylic based.

Looking at the comparison pictures, I'd have to say the Tamiya has a slight grayish tint to it in comparison with the Humbrol. A small amount of a slightly more brownish-greenish paint mixed in might bring it closer to a perfect match.

At any rate, if people are really dedicated to having the perfect match, some experimenting is in order.

Just don't inhale too much of the stuff! ;)

Edit: If anyone intends to experiment with mixing, be sure to document the amount of each paint used at every step of the way. If someone achieves the perfect match, it would be great to share the "recipe" with the board.

As long as they are both acrylics. I know Tamiya is an acrylic, but I'm not sure what A999 is.

No clue what would happen if you mixed an acrylic with an enamel or laquer paint. I Don't think the results would be good though. Probably the same as mixing water with oil.

You could only mix acrylic with acrylic, enamel with enamel etc.

It's exactly like mixing oil & water, enamel is solvent based & acrylic is water based.

Saying that - mixing could produce the best result :)

I believe FNG did Kev...If you brought a color chip in for them to match to, any paint supply with a decent mixing setup can do it.

Sigh..I tried to get you guys to mix your own paints so long ago but gave up..LOL...I got gallons of custom brown bess out in the back. Some acrylic, some enamel, I even made up some auto enamel. The secret is to get a good close stock color. Like olive drab, then use universal tinting dyes, available at finer paint supply stores. Tinting dyes are very dense and a drop will drastically change the color of a small quantity of paint. An added bonus is that they work in both enamel and acrylic. A good supply of these in pints should last a hobbyist a long long time. A house painter...not so long ;)

I first start with an olive drab color then add some yellow and some red to get the color to shift towards brown. If the color is still too bright burnt sienna will tone it down, never use black. Black imparts a grayish tone to everything. The colors I use are bright primaries, so that they don't muddy up the mix or make it look gray.

Mixing paint is easy, just start off little by little, you cant un mix paint. Keep a portion of the base you started out with set aside and use it to knock down the darkness if you over mix, adding white will only give you gray...again...have fun and if you screw up...I don't know nuthin!..

What a disclaimer!

 I never really thought about black or white giving a gray tone to a mix! I've always used those, and have gotten frustrated when they don't quite look right. Now I know why.:D

Humbrol Bess Brown #170 has been discontinued. The model shop I buy from had a couple of tins left, but were snatched up before I could grab them.:(

The colour is becoming scarce, and the tins at your shop would be on hand stock. Once it's gone, it won't be replenished so I would grab as many tins as you are willing to buy.:D

Manor Paints, based in Shipley, do this colour 'turtle'. There's quite a contrast here- it looked closer to the PR colour when it was on the colour chart. I dunno. Anyone think this might be a useful one?

Lewis

[edit] apologies for the sloppy nature of the samples. I didn't have time for the airbrush- xf51 is brushed on there, while I stippled the turtle one.

Someone with a Pantone book and a tin of brown bess needs to match the color and get the number. That way we'll have a universal reference for future generations. For the eventual day that it dissappears all together...:(

Am I right in thinking Humbrol Bess Brown is a different colour to humbrol Brown Bess? There was an empty slot for brown bess, and it looked more brown than green.

I have a new potential substitute anyway- pics in a bit.

Humm..

I don't really know what to say here Lewis. When I look at my XF-51 painted PR it looks like your Turtle color sample above. It's really amazing how lighting, etc., plays with color.

Your picture sample of the XF-51 looks like a completely different color altogether..

There is no difference between "Brown Bess" and "Bess Brown".

"Brown Bess" is the nickname of the British flint lock musket of the 18th century. Brown being the colour of walnut used on the stock. Bess just being a female name that sounded right.

So the Humbrol colour Brown Bess I assume is the colour of those 18th century muskets. Kinda interesting trivia for our 22nd century pulse rifles.

Humbrol may have switched the names around so it sounds more like a colour: Forrest Green, Sky Blue, Bess Brown.;)
