The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I know for most of us, much of this info is all pretty common knowledge, but I thought it might be fun/useful to have it all in one place with pictures of the “personal touches” the actors gave their characters. Please feel free to add missing info and/or backstories!

Hudson

-Helmet: In black marker he has; an 8-ball drawing, his “game over” countdown, and “dead head” written on the helmet cover.
Attachment:
Hudson Helment Grafitti.JPG

-Body Armor: Pretty iconic and well known stuff.
-Louise with love knot (fiancé at the time)
-Iconic Skull "death or glory"
-Eyes behind his back
-'Contents under pressure, dispose of properly'
-Sardine can opener cod-piece
Attachment:
Hudson Customizations armor.jpg

Other bits:
-paracord necklace through sheath of his Explorer MM-IV (not Gerber Mk2 as often reported)
-Eagle "bolo tie" on right Grenade Strap
-Tattoos to include a "hinge" on his inner elbow & a barbed wire 'necklace' tattoo culminating in his skull logo 'pendant'
Attachment:
Hudson's tie and cord.jpg
Hudson's tie and cord.jpg [ 260.21 KiB | Viewed 20780 times ]

Frost

-Breastplate: “Heath” (short for “Heather”, his girlfriend at the time) inside a heart w/arrow.
*(As I’ve gathered, they did the heart too small and could only fit “Heath”, but someone assured him people would know it was short for Heather and to not worry about it…)
-Shoulder: Sticker/tape that reads “When in doubt, nuke em”
-He did also have a tattoo of a skull on his right shoulder, but clear screen grabs are difficult to find

Crowe

Hicks
*(worth noting that Michael Biehn did not do the personalization and in the ‘making of’ video vocalized displeasure with the previous actor cast as Hicks putting a “target” (the heart) on the armor)

Breastplate:
-Heart and pad-lock
-"Born again" (bullet?) hole in shoulder bell
Attachment:

Back:
-Chinese(?) character. (reportedly signifying "love" but details are difficult to see on screen and most replicas are inaccurate)
-"Lifer" (signifying his career status as a marine with no intent to leave the Corp)
*replicas featuring words "danger" above "Lifer" appear to be inaccurate and of unknown origin.
Attachment:
hicks back combo.jpg

Miscellaneous:
-Savannah Bronica lighter (w/case) duct taped to right grenade strap
-Ser#/Social Sec# Number tattoo on left arm
-"Non-Toxic" is written on his ab-pad above the cod-piece. It is VERY difficult to see/screen grab, but it is clearly visible when Frost tells him "Yo Hicks!" as the tracker pings and they set off (eventually finding Newt).
-Original (and fired) "Hicks" actor James Remar included a daisy flower on the helmet. Michael Biehn tossed it in the trash upon taking over, Never seen on screen

Apone
Surprising no one, the man was no-nonsense and had no mods to uniform nor armor.
-He did wear a "Mason's" ring, as he was apparently a free mason
-He wore necklace with a gold pendant of some type. Most likely a St. Christopher medal.
-Tattoo of some type on left forearm (indecipherable, potentially real and not costume decision)
Attachment:
Apone customizations.jpg

Wierzbowski

Helmet: “SKI” on back above his name stensil
Body Armor
-Back: “Spam in a can” w/rough hand drawn art
-Front: A pair of dice "rolled to 'snake eyes'
-Crotch: “Spare Weapon” w/an arrow pointing to his junk

Dietrich
-Helmet: Vietnam era Nurse's Caudices pin in helmet band
-Arm: Red cross tattoo w/drop of blood
-Rear: “Kiss My…” w/a drawing of lips written in red on her buttocks
-Undershirt (BACK) - same cross with drop of blood as the tattoo on arm
-Undershirt (FRONT) and Armor Breastplate include same Red "NO ENTRY" style symbol.
-Back of Helmet has blue "BLUE ANGEL" inscription (a tribute to classic German/American actress Marlena Dietrich)
-Hand: A bandage/Rising Sun headband wrap (on right hand)
*(with a backstory uncovered by Retrograde here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=12273)
Attachment:

Drake

This guy...he had fun with the assignment!

-Hat: “This END UP” in marker & some kind of beaded woven necklace through brim.
-Voodoo/juju chicken bone necklace
-Another beaded/woven necklace with feathers around barrel of smartgun
-"Bell" and "scales of justice" charms worked into necklace
-White paint on weapon: "MY BITCH" on body, and "GRRRRR" down hand guard over grip.
-Bloodshot 'Eye' painted on eye-piece of headset
-Fingerless padded black gloves (likely a sparring or sports protective glove, unknown brand/model)
-A pink set of breasts (Boobs!) painted on gloves
-Undershirt was unique to other characters with AES and "I’ve Served My Time in Hell: Cetti Epsilon NC-104" printed on it.
(Shirt reportedly also contained phrases "eat the apple fuck the corps" and "pray for war" (Never seen on screen, no known photos. Presumably on back of shirt as front was seen clearly on screen without those phrases?).

Vasquez

-Chest plate: “El Riesgo Siempre Vive” in white paint (translates to ‘The risk always lives’. The actress stated in the “making of” film that it was chosen from one of her favorite poems )
-On her smartgun: “Adios” in white paint ('goodbye' in Spanish)
Attachment:
vasquez customizations 2.jpg
vasquez customizations 2.jpg [ 255.16 KiB | Viewed 20772 times ]

-Red bandana ("fast color elephant trunk up" pattern, discontinued but out there on secondary market)
-On her back (BDU top): Written “Loco” in black marker
-On her tank top neckline: Scribble. (per Jeanette, she attempted a skull but it went so badly she abandoned it)
-She started with straps of some sort (same material as the helmet bands?) around her arms to show off the biceps (removed after hive battle)
-Fingerless leather "biker gloves".
-Gold necklace (rope pattern) with gold crucifix
Attachment:
vasquez customizations 1.jpg
vasquez customizations 1.jpg [ 193.96 KiB | Viewed 20772 times ]

-Tattoos include:
Left cheek has a teardrop tattoo (in line with her backstory as a convict pulled into service from prison)
"VIVA" on hand/fingers (one on each digit)
"INEZ" on left forearm.
Attachment:
Vasquez Tattoos.jpg

Spunkmeyer
-"Grunt Runt" written on cap (never seen on screen, as he was hat-less or had his co-pilot helmet on)
-Writing on left shoulder of flack jacket (reported to be "DEATH FROM ABOVE")

Ferro

-Helmet: “Fly the friendly skies” graffiti
-Mirror lens on black frame aviator sunglasses (despite presence of a visor on helmet)
-Pistol holster had a "lucky rabbits foot"
-One black fingerless glove (on right "stick" hand). Left hand bare/gloveless.

I'd actually never seen Crowe's stuff or all of Drake's and Vasquez's.

Don't forget Vasquez's teardrop tattoo under her eye !

I did find good photos of Hick's armour, I didn't know at the time if it was the real deal or a replication. I will look again :)

Here it is, it is an exact replication done by Terry English :)

Now while I knew about the caduceus for about a year, it wasn't until recently that someone (gunny63?) identified the particular one used-

The "N" can bee seen in her promo pic (just before she gets jumped by the alien in the hive).

Hudson:

This is bloody hard to get a clear shot of, but he has an Eagle Bolo tie on his right grenade strap:

There it is to the (picture's left) of his skull graffitti.

This was identified a few years back as the correct Eagle Bolo:

(Hudson's is a bright silver rather than the subdued one above)

Here is another pic of the more accurate bright silver version (unfortunately I can't find a bigger pic):

These were readily available on ebay at one time.

"Lifer" (in white letters) can be seen between his lower armour attachment (braces?). Never heard a backstory from Michael Biehn (or James Remar ;) ), but the simple answer is that a "Lifer" is someone who has no intention of quitting or retiring from (in this case) the Corps. They are in "for life."

I've never seen "Danger" on his armour either.

This may cause further problems, but the US Army Nurse's Caduceus collar insignia comes in several different versions, depending on whether they were made pre, mid or post WW2, or even later, with the N in a number of different colours.

Depends how screen-accurate you want to be... ;)

Awesome to the max. And yes, now I see the white letters "lifer". I was half expecting it to appear in red like on the reproduction armor I had seen before (and Moosh later posted), but sure enough, there it is.

Also the nurse pin and bolo knots are GREAT pics and info.

Thanks!

That first mark on her helmet isn't an "I", it is a single (open) quotation mark-

Attachment:

The opposite side of her helmet has the "close" quotation mark. So her slogan is in quotation marks-

' Fly the Friendly Skies '

Spunkmeyer:

(I forgot about this one)

On the left shoulder of his flak vest (circled) is some writing in magic marker. It has been identified (I believe by Harry) as

"Death From Above"

As Woody said, the writing on his cap is 'Grunt Runt.'

(Edited because I skim read Woody's original post- sorry Woody. :) )

PS- the pic of Ferro's helmet is the actual screenused helmet in case anyone is wondering. Pic courtesy of member "Gio" (Alien Emotion) who currently owns it.

There has been "a lot" of debate about the meaning of the numbers of Hicks' tattoo-

I don't think it is an SSN, but might be part of his Marine service number. I like to say it is his "Vidfone" number for the laydeez. 8)

One thing for certain is that he did have it in the film, and it wasn't just for that promotional pic:

Nice thread! Have been thinking this for ages so its great that someone picked it up. Had a discussion with an artist way back planning to do a small PDF guide to the Marines but both were busy with other projects. So I encourage all guys here to continue and excavate details and post pics to complete it all, I know here is more on the forum.

As for Hicks SSN I actually asked him at a con a few years back. He said that the prop department gave them hands free to "personalize" their outlooks so he took a grease pencil and wrote his SSN on his arm that he thought was cool. I interpreted as a flesh tag so one knows who the body belongs to in case of mutilation.
- So now you can use it.. he said smiling.
I said -Yeah later, and smiled back.
He suddenly looked like a ghost that scared me a little and he hurriedly backed off. He probably thought I was a stalker and got second thoughts which felt a little strange.

He also claim SSN during a magazine interview and I think it is also mentioned on one of the DVDs/BR's.

As for continuing Marine personalization there is the Barbed wire neck tattoo, whose was it... Hudsons?? that has to be added (don't recall if a couple of dog tags were also in the tattoo)?
The Eye on the Drakes Smartgun Eye piece must be added.
Dietrichs Medic bag has a huge red cross painted on it.
The Chinese signs on Hicks armor btw are deciphered in detail here somewhere. Some one with more time then me have to go through the archives.

Could we list all the details in text for each character to get a more clear overview?

/Jonsey

Well, not a "great" shot, as you can't see if dog tags are present on the bottom, but here is Hudson's "barb wire" tat.

Considering that elbow is under bandages through most of the movie, it could be a tough pull to find a good shot of the elbow. I'll see what I can scrounge up!

Try the one where Ripley says, "I hope you're right... I really do" and Vas stares back in chastised arrogance.
Also, look at Vas's facial closeups when she's welding everything.

Was gonna post pics I just took with my digicam from the blu ray, will post them once the camera's battery has recharged. :)

Vas' tattoo is barely visible and not shown at all in most publicity pics, maybe just done with mascara or something at the time?

Hudson has a skull & crossbones at the bottom of his barbed wire necklace, seen in the pic just above.

'Bowski's wearing a plain gold ring on his wedding ring finger too.

Drake's got more than one necklace on, including at least one metal chain. Will try to get a shot later.
