The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Been quite a while since I posted at lengh here, moved house late last year, xmas happened and work still gets in the way of all the fun things!

After said house move I found myself with a small shed at the bottom of the garden, cover from the elements for fiberglassing/spraying and fabricating stuff - hmmmmm, I always wanted to own a smartgunner rig.............NOW'S THE TIME!!

So I ordered myself a smartgun kit from Matsuo, including a fiberglass chest plate (mid January) and set to making the harness whilst I awaited the gun kit (impatiently!!)

Using the Hot Toys Vas and Drake models for reference I made the harness, arm and padding pretty much by eye and my mannequin 'Harry' (No seriuosly!) was extremley useful for sizing and test fitting. The arm is made up of just under 1" x 1" aluminium box, the harness made out of several pieces of aluminium, 10mm thickfor the waist, 6mm thick for the chest upright, 4mm thick for the neck V and 3mm thick for the back/kidney plates.

I haven't actually tried on the finished harness yet but several trial fits 'in progress' seem quite comfy.

The headset was bought from our own Cpl Smith and I added the boom mike (4mm aluminium tube) and a couple of air fittings as mike ends with a 35mm film can attaching it to the headset. The wiring is attached with a 1/4" mono jack and socket into the base of the eyepice. Finishing it off, I added a screen from an old mobile phone as a screen in the eyepiece (just for effect).

Some of you will have seen the pics on facebook of my progress but I'm going to be adding them here too.

Now all I need is the gun kit............................................... :D :D :D :D :D

That isn't made of metal.
That is made of win.

Epic, epic win.

Well played, sir!
Looks like we're gonna have quite a few smartgunners at our 2012 drops!

Looks amazing thanks for sharing . I'm also doing a smart gunner kit to, and your photos help very much . Did you machine cut all the metal or were you able to purchase the metal parts pre cut and just put them together ? Great work keep us updated !

Thanks guys! I did toy with the idea of a functional back release but felt the whole harness would be too flexible, the release rod will come out but I riveted the plates together for strength.

Matt, the aluminium plate I purchased online from a UK supplier. They will cut your chosen plate thickness to size but I had to bend and shape them myself and the card templates were basically roughed out by eye and guesstimated. It all worked out though!

Very cool thx for the feedback does any one know where to get the resin parts for the smartgunner head set? 2012 looks like the year of the smart gunner due to the amount of people putting together smart gunners gear

Hey Simon, when I get home later I'll email you what I have, although the back pieces as I said were roughed out on card over the mannequin and pretty much custom made to fit me. What I do have should get you started though.

Very kind of you mate!

Just so I can work everything out, could you tell me your height etc?

This is damn fine work your doing by the way. I bet there'd be only a slight difference when you compare it to a real steadicam vest.

I had a thought about that arm too, could you not cut some piping in half and weld/glue them onto the bars to give it that curved look the real ones have?
