The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I'm currently working on a full size Aliens Warrior statue that I'm hoping to bring to the NSC in September (albeit very much as a work-in-progress) and I'm after any advice I can get about shades of browns to use to give it at least a rough paintjob if I have time - I'm really throwing this one out to BUGZ as his suit is the closest I've seen to the originals in terms of the colour scheme and paint finish.

Check out the photos of his suit repaint here.

Any info would be much appreciated as it would save me from going through loads of paints to test which would work. Just the name of a shade would help, I mean I know it's not a chocolate brown, should I be looking more in the sandy brown range maybe?

Harry

Hi Harry

Sure Bugz will put you right, but I used a yellow ochre acrylic paint, mixed about 50/50 with liquid latex, for my Alien head.
I then basically dry brushed it onto all the raised parts etc. in several layers to build up and get gradations (from dark to light) in the colour.

I finished off with acrylic varnish again mixed with a little latex to give it all a shiney gloss finish.

I mix with latex as I was told it helps keep the paint a little more flexible when dry (stops cracking/flaking), if painting onto rubber, so you may not need that.

I tried to base my scheme on the screen used ones too and think it came out well.
Haven't took any pics, but could if you want.

Martin

Edit - pics added if any help. looks much brighter than is due to flash, and I remembered I added a little red in places for some variance.

Hey Harry,

I never noticed the thread mate - sorry!!

I only use three main colours for my pain-ups!

Go with Arylic paints. The main colours are; Burnt Umber (darkish brown) , Yellow Ochre (browny yellow) and Sap Green (dark green)

Coat the entire statue with a black acrylic/latex ( mix it up50/50 )

Using a sponge add the Burnt Umber to the raised areas and start to blend in ligter browns to that, giving you a perfect blend. Then add the Yellow Ochre with alittle mixture of Sap Green and work the colour in with the browns. ( hard to explain without showing you!) But once you try it on a small section, you will find it quite easy.

If I had known earlier I'd have done it for you mate!!

If you need anymore info then please PM me!!

Cheers

Bri

No problem - It's mostly a foam-filled resin piece and it's big!! I'm about 5' 10" so here's a comparison - you can see how tall it is and that's without the head!

The idea is to replicate one of the Warrior dummy puppets from Aliens, there were enormous differences between the puppets and the suits worn by performers. The legs (which are foam-filled fibreglass) are taken from the Alien costume that Bolaji Badejo wore, in fact I suspect the casting was taken with him wearing the costume. The ribs I think are from Alien as well, although for the Aliens puppets two more ribs were also added to make them even taller!

I still need to find arms for it, which were the same as those used as the smaller 'inner' arms of the Alien Queen so if anyone has a pair they can lend me for casting let me know!

Hope that helps,

Harry

The parts are from Alien, but you want to paint it like the "Aliens" alien?

Is this related to the 1:1 Alien "model" that was shown at Wonderfest a few years ago?

That's correct on both counts there DSB. I know it sounds weird but I did explain why in my previous post. ;)

This photo might clear things up - on the left is the Alien in Giger's workshop circa 1978, on the right an Aliens puppet in the Stan Winston workshop at Pinewood circa 1985.

I've no idea to be honest, at least without seeing a photo of that one, sorry.

I'm not that fast! I'm still building it on and off as well as building two Dropship pilot helmets! It might not even be ready for painting by the time of the NSC.
