The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Theres no indication on the silver parts of them once being card, really nice work! Nice smooth shape.

Am I right in saying that you only fibreglassed the back of the parts? Hard to see on my iPod screen.

Thanks. I could probably have done with doing a bit more sanding and filling, but I'm hoping a lot of it will be covered in the painting distressing and weathering.

The front has had a coat of resin, but no matt applied. I only put the matt on the back.

Are you not putting on the green base coat?

No, I'm not using a base coat. Just going to paint all the colours next to each other. I believe this is how the originals were painted.

Ah cool.
I always mess it up if I do it that way, don't know why!

I'm currently sorting all the pep into PDF's ready to print out :)

I hope mine turns out half as good as yours.

Thanks dude. If you have any problems just let me know and I'll see if I can help. How come you are turning all the peps into pdf?

This isn't t the easiest way of painting, and tbh I'm not 100% why I'm doing it this way as it's going to take a lot longer than spraying a green base coat. But I've started, so I've got to carry on.

I don't own a printer (well the ink to 100% correct!) so I'm going to have to get someone else to print them out so PDF seems the way to go. Plus I can offer them up on here to save people having to download Pepakura, obviously it'll all be the same size though.

Well doing it this way can eliminate any edges made by the paint layers, so the end result might be better :)

This actually looks awesome. I was thinking about making my armour out of pep at one point but thought it might cost too much. Also worried that tightening the straps on it etc would crack it. Can't wait to see the final product though and how it goes when being worn

Making the actual armour hasn't cost a lot. I spent about £30 on resin and fibre-glass matt. The main cost is time, it has taken a lot. But finally the end is in sight.

I'm hoping that it won't crack. It feels fairly strong and I think it should be ok.

Thats awesome. I might give this a try whilst I'm saving for Spats cause I need to get some practice with pep as I have a few projects I want to do and this definitely seems far simpilar than the others I want to do.

Can I just ask how thick did you make it in the end?

It's probably about 3 or 4mm thick. I used 2 layers of 300 gramms per square metre fibre-glass matt.

I didn't make my leg armour, and I did run out of resin, I started with 2 kg. So with tools and taking into account that you are going to need more resin than I used I reckon you could make a set for £50. But this doesn't take into acount things like paint filler webbing and all the other bits and bobs that slowly make the cost creep up.

Leg armour doesn`t have to be worn and also I`ve seen photos of NONE SA shin armour (RIOT kit for starters), once painted up does the trick, so there are other options too ;)

You'd be far better off ordering on-line. I nearly fell over when I went to my local motorfactors and saw they were charging £30 for 2.5kg of resin. I think I paid about half that on-line.

The only thing I have done since my last update is painting.

Here's where I'm at:
Image
Image

I also made a tobacco tin, this was to practise and see what the paint colours were like. I also needed something to put my tobacco in. For this I used the humbrol 98 chocolate, but I didn't like it so switched to the 160 German camo red brown for my armour. The tin started off a Rizla tobacco tin I picked up for the £1 store.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll get around to finishing sanding the chest piece so I can get the holes drilled and test fit it. I think I'm going to have to trim a little off the shoulder section on the back which is why I want to do a test fit before priming.

Thanks. The purple stuff is liquid mask. You can paint it on and then once it's dried paint over it and then remove it once you've finished. I really like doing my distressing this way as I find the liquid mask gives you nice jagged edges as though the paint has chipped away.

Yeh I used in my A-Level stuff, but that one was a flesh/white colour and you couldn't see it once you'd put it on!!

I personally prefer the painting the chips on method but that's only because I can't be bothered using the mask and if you bugger it up you can wipe it off and do it again.

Is the Sharland on the tin hand painted???? Looks really good

I used a card stencil and taped it on. However the paint still went every where, so I had to tidy it up quite a bit. Lesson learned: don't just tape down stencils, stick them down with some kind of glue.
