The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

You see the Alien take a munch on a couple of prisoners in Alien3. However, it's interupted; poor beastie!

I remember, years ago, reading the theory that the acid blood was basically part of a biomechanical battery - so the creatures self powered.

Can't remember where i read it but always thought it was a nice explanation.

Maybe them bug juices turned the colonists into Xeno Soup :D Makes for an easy feast! All you need is a straw!
It might also depend on it's constant evolution every time it comes in contact with a different species who might not have to eat, just survive and make more alien babies!?! Because it would have to adapt rather quickly to it's surroundings. For example, after Aliens, the alien went from a human/alien mish-mash to an ox/dog (depending on the version you like). That buggy really wanted human meat in the worst way!
I don't know, just a thought... It's 3:46am right now and I'm fraking tired. Must go to sleep.... sleeeep!

Cheers!

A3 does show the Alien chomping on a prisoner as Gareth already said-

However I believe that the Aliens do not require nourishment in the classic sense. Why?

Because they are Alien.

The creature in "ALIEN" went from roughly 24 inches to 8 feet in a matter of a couple of hours. It was also never seen "eating" anything... well other than taking a bite out of Brett's skull and Parker's shoulder(?).

NOTHING grows that fast, and if it was based on an "Eathbound" organism it would require an enourmous amount of food to grow that quickly and maintain itself.

But the point of the film/creature IS the fact that it does not conform to anything ever seen before- hence the simplicity of the film's title "ALIEN".

So the whole point is that it doesn't "make sense". They don't eat. They don't have "eyes" yet they clearly see. They seem to live for the sole purpose of killing and propagating the species. Are they a species? Are they a weapon? Are they bio-mechanical? Have they always existed?

We just don't know, and to me that is the wonderous mystique surrounding the creature. Personally I can't stand when a film/story/PC game attempts to "explain away" some of the mystery.

There was a computer game years ago that allowed you to play as an alien...and it needed to feed, to gain strength...it used its inner jaw to kinda lap out blood,. The only time I think we see one eat is in the one tunnel scene where the man walks around the corner and finds the alien feasting...
Also agree on leaving certain things about the alien un-known. So far it seems to be working, This forum wouldn't be as fun if we knew all the answer. Thats what made the alien movies what they are. So much to ponder about.

Speaking from a biology standpoint, they would need to eat to grow unless they were like plants and could just take carbon out of the atmosphere. Of course you could say there is some other made up sci-fi process they use to drive cellular division/growth.

I even read in a wiki that it might be eating iron from the structures...
Pure speculation but acid and iron seem to look like a car battery !

Yes but Abe likes humping legs too... maybe that needed to aid in the digestion of the human food?!

based on my limited knowledge and access to any "aliens", I would have to say large quantities of alchohol are what keep them going

That's always puzzled me; what bit of Parker does get chomped on?

In the screenshots I've seen the open wound gives the impression it's his head, but the shape before the bite suggests not and when we see him dead later his head looks intact.

I think I did a super slow motion on that bite once, and it looked like Parker's shoulder to me.

Screen shot time.

Okay I have a bit of a question and I'd like to hear Gareth's opinion in particular (of course "everyone" is welcome to provide their opinion)...

In ALIEN during the scene where Brett encounters the creature- when the creature is hunched over, it is drooling "a lot".

But one thing that struck me is that the drooling seemed to be timed as if it was breathing as well as drooling. With each spurt of drool, it is if the creature is breathing outwards.

When I first saw this as a young lad I thought the creature was "breathing drool".

So... does it breathe drool?

I'm dead serious with this.

I believe it is like a fighter when they are out of breath they seem to be breathing drool.

speaking of brett, i always wondered why it bite him in the head if it used its tail like a stinger. made me think of it used the tail for extra leverage in picking up brett, or if the tail was indeed a stinger. (i know in the novelization of aliens, they spoke of gorman getting stung)

I believe in the RPG book published by Leading Edge Games, it was written that the aliens eat some pretty strange stuff, glass and dirt was on the list. I guess those two would make sense since the alien has a silicone cell structure?

Man, where's Mike Lynch when you need him??

I believe they want each Character to die differently, either to show what it can do, or to avoid boredom from the same thing over and over...

The Queen seemd to use her tail a lot :D
