The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Sounds like you have to be online at the right moment for your chosen species to be available.
Otherwise, you get whatever they've got space left for...

Yes, but in the game "foyer" on Xbox I can see existing players already signed up to the match changing species symbols. So ???? :(

If you're having problems with the Aliens then try shooting the head/upper torso area. One of the tips on the loading screen even mentions that shooting them in the head does the most damage, which is usual fare for FPS games :)

Under the picture of the pred/alien/marine you see three boxes I believe. Highlight the one under the right corner of the species. If you look close you can just make out that it has an arrow pointing up.

Press up and it will highlight the picture of the species. If you hit the (X) button (xbox) the picture will change to whatever is available. You can still only chose from 2 out of the three. I guess that is to prevent the room from filling with all aliens or whatever.

That is going by memory I don't have the game on right now. But it is something like that.

Here is another VERY reasonable gripe. Has anyone found a way to shoulder your weapon yet? Firing everything from the hip is SOOO 1999.

Well I finally got a game. :)

Not bad, although while I haven't played it for a while I didn't think this version was anywhere near as fast as Rebellions original AvP on the PC. Everything felt a little 'slow' really. I'm not a multiplayer... erm, player... though so I'm sure the actual game will be much more interesting and frenetic. Also for some reason I thought that in terms of graphics and design this version would leap out at me but that wasn't so.

Also I presume all the chatter in different languages is the other players in the group, is that correct? I must find a way of turning that off!

Anyway my STEAM ID is HHACA if we're starting a group. PC platform.

I always thought the point of multiplayer was that you could hear/talk to the other players?

I was having a great chat with the lads playing earlier, some of whom hadn't seen any/all of the Aliens films.

They were puzzled as to how the single player would work, with three different species using the same story.

Right got Harry added & he has I added. Now we need 6 more PC players for this, to make it work or more maybe?

One idea to counter the Death Match scenario is how about : 4 Marines, 3 bugs & 1 Pred? That was we`ll have a more interesting match?

Anyway PC Id for STEAM are:-

TECKNO VIKING
HHACA

Add to for the PC Steam players.

From memory is that on the last screen before the game starts?
Only place I recall seeing a pic of the species I was.
I'll have another look later.

If you have a preconceived hatred of multiplayer games, and like me are having a rotten time essentially losing every game so far (and have a head for the Bayesian) then take a good look at this website - if you drill down it has some pretty gory details: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/pro ... fault.aspx - This is for Xbox, but I'm pretty sure that the other platforms work in the same way.

In summary: however bad or good you are, it will eventually attempt to match you to give you a decent chance of "winning" or "losing" in a match. Different sources give different convergence times but you should be seeing things improving after 15-20 games. On Xbox at least, the system works between games so if this is your first experience of MP, you're likely to have a harder time of things until the algorithm works you out.

The implications also improve my psychological feeling about multiplayer: The system is actively trying to make fair matches that are fun for people who are crap, and the outcome of any given game, if not exactly "fixed", is massaged artificially by matchmaking to have a good long-term outcome for any given player.

I didn't realise that matchmaking systems were that sophisticated (or "fair") in videogames - You're only as good or as bad as the maths say you are! Keep at it! ;)

I had no idea such a system would exsist, I thought it was simple as you win some you lose some. Like Ive been playing the AvP demo now, I won a few times, then other times I was at the bottom..waaaaaaaaaaay down in last place. Its just a demo so I guess the ranking system dont work for it, but then again I dont see it, the times Ive been owned badly on Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3 etc. So to me its all LIIIIIIIIIIES! lol

Been playing the demo a fair bit on the xbox and I'm quite pleased with it overall. The graphics aren't up to standard in my opinion but it does play really well.

I hated playing the Alien on the original AvP but its great fun in this one. It requires an entirely different style and approach to conventional fps games and thats what makes it so refreshing. My tip is to use walls or cellings to get around, stay in shadows (destroy lights) and only attack marines/predators from behind or above.

The Marine is far from a wimp in this game, the pulse rifle is lethal and really the only weapon you need. The shotgun and flamethrower are useless, smartgun is ok but severely affects mobility. Make use of the motion tracker, extremely useful. Also, check behind you constantly for danger. I've got lots of kills just by checking behind to see an Alien/Predator try to sneak up on me.

The Predator is probably the hardest to master becasue he has so many gadgets and weapons. I dont bother to cloak much, Aliens can see you anyway and he's still fairly visible to marines even. Constantly flick through vision modes quickly to check for danger, very useful. Mines are great, if a little cheap, I plant as many as I can lol. Plasmacaster is devestating at medium range, abit slow for long range. I dont like the combistick, too difficult to aim. The disc is probably the strongest found weapon.

Dont overdo trophy/stealth kills, they make you vulnerbale to attack because they are slow to execute. In fact I never use them. I am still getting to grips with melee and blocking, this is probably the most crucial part to success in the game. As far as I know it works like this

blocking stops light attack
light attack deflects heavy attack
heavy attack beats blocking.

I'm told that it is an inherent function of all matchmaking (on Xbox Live atleast), so should apply to the AvP Demo. However, it doesn't mean that you won't have times when you're mullered; it just ensures that long-term you won't win most of the time or lose most of the time - you should have balanced games where you have a decent chance of doing well. Essentially, it's artificially enforcing the idea of "you win some you lose some"! :)

xenolv426 ;)

The Predator has weapons in the demo?

I only seemed to have the metal spikes/claws. How do I get the other weapons? :?

The Predators weapons are pick-ups that are scattered throughout the map, for balancing issues I guess. I thought the Predator would absolutely dominate this game but Rebellion have done a great job keeping things balanced. I do worse as the Predator than the other species lol but I've only had a chance to play it a few times.

The Predator has the cool/bad mofo factor, the Alien has the fun/grin factor and the Marine has the "there's movement all over the place" soil your underwear factor lol

Dunno if its just the xbox version but I was quite dissappointed by the graphics but the sounds are very authentic (the smartgun sound is rubbish tho). Close quarters melee combat isn't best suited to first person view in my opinion. The action gets a bit disorientating and decends into furious button bashing at times but it does play well overall . . . I really like it.

Ah, thats a very good explenation Gareth, thanks for clearing that up. heh, win some, lose some. Still its facinating, for me that is, that Mircrosoft considers us gamers, dont like to be owned by the supierior players whove practiced 24/7 lol

And regards xenolv624? You...lied...to....me

When I play you on the AvP..your...so............ DEAD, BUGBOY!! GAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Yup, I dont expect my xbox controller to last very long during this demo phase, ANDA when I get the game heh heh. And may I also point out, thanks for saying the preds weapons are pick ups, I spent ages pressing every single buttom combination possibly known to man, trying to get the Preds weapons going. So thanks for that lol

I started downloading the PS3 demo last night, but for the first time ever it was going slow (I normally get very fast transfer speeds from the PSN store), so I thought there must be a big demand for AvP (which is good news I suppose). I just finished downloading it earlier tonight, and now I can't connect to anyone. :(

The only thing I can say so far about it is that they've got the WY logo wrong. I noticed this instantly, and was a bit disappointed by such a basic error.

Oh well, I'll have to try again tomorrow.

I'm not much of a multi-player fan, so I'm hoping the single player game is good, as that's what I'll be buying it for.

i don't even bother with trying to get trophy kills. takes too long and someone always sneaks up on you.

i don't like how the alien melee attacks are on the bumpers, would make alot more sense to be on the triggers.
