The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi all

I've just got back from Holiday so just been catching up on all the new theads.

I can confirm what Reverend Scapegoat said about the TE armour. According to Terry all the armour sets were made to the same size and the only actor who needed abit of adjusting was Trevor Steedman. He did say that his memory of it was a bit fuzzy now but sounded 99.9% sure that that was the case.

The Spat armour I had was smaller than my TE set and did not wrap around me. Maybe this is so that it will fit most sizes. If it wrapped around then the people who could wear it would be limited.

My armour was however made to my specific measurements and when compared to the Hudson armour Terry has it was about an inch or so longer.

This is a great thread for those of us without armour & of course those with various armour too.

The MAA Large armour, where can you get that from? Is it still available? Anyone in the UK got a spare to sell? ;)

Thought I would post this link. It's got some good shots of the Hick's armour and how it looks wrapped around him. He must have been skinny!

That's interesting as I remember him telling me that the armours were all custom made for each actor.

I recently spoke with the owner of the Dietrich armour from which the Alien War/John Riddell sets were cast from and asked him to measure the height of the chest plate from the middle of the neck to the bottom of the piece. He told me it was 13".

I just pulled my Hudson armour out of it's flightcase and measured the same place and it's 14". Not much of a difference but with all respect to him it may be an indication of Terry's memory not being too clear, of course after 20 years whose is?

Hm.
That is odd. He definitely mentioned a few times over the weekend that all the sets were the same.

It was 20 years ago, mind. 20 years ago, I was making powerloaders out of Lego, and could I tell you how I made 'em?
Hell no.

Height wise the armour may not be that much off a inch or two can make all the diff though.

These pics show how the front and back should be touching or overlapping each other.

Since I started this thread I thought it only 'fitting' that I add some more. I have owned a set of Steel Dreams armor and like i said before it looked like it shrunk in the dryer. (195# 6, 44chest and 34 waist. I picked up a sef of MAA off of Ebay and it is definatly larger. The shins look like the same size but the chest, back and shoulders are bigger in girth and length. From doing casts in my Icons days I am comfortable saying that this was a pull from a metal set. There are definate signs of where the metal bendt on the original. The details are crisp except around the main 'H' shape on the breast plate. The crotch plate also has a dent molded in it.

Get a heat gun mate! You're gonna need it to shape that FG armour. I have a set of MAA Hicks and when I got it, everything was a bit too flat except for the back piece. Oh and use the gun before you paint.

Or, if you have a helper you could do it in the oven, and then custom form it to your body. Just be sure to not leave it in too long, and wear a heavy, long sleeve shirt, or wrap a towel around yourself to avoid getting scorched.

Crowe is 14.5 measured to the piece that curves in. I thought it would be the smallest of the 3.

I am going to go out on a limb with the folowing statement. The MAA armor might have been molded off a set of Hudson armor, not Hicks. For the past 4 days I have been holed up in a hotel room with the chest plate of my newly aquired MAA armor. The Hicks chest has certain charactics: the neck scoops down and there is a ledge on both left and right area where the upper grenade harness clamps on. On the Hudson armor, the neck line doesnt go down as much and there is only a ridge line on the right, not left. Anyway thats my observation. The chest has been reformed and the 'H' is now crisp and clean. I'll take pics when I get back to LA.

As far as I know the MAA armour is a cast taken from a resin recast (sold by global_uplink_uk) of an aluminium set that they commissioned Terry English to make for them after Aliens was released.

Because of this it would be inaccurate to reference measurements from it in terms of accuracy to the screen-used sets.

Harry, I agree that comparing 'available suits' to screen used is hopeless. Screen suits are hand made and thus each one is different. Even the TE suits (made for collectors) that have pics posted are different from the screen used. I'm happy with the MAA suit because of size and its fiberglass. I'm thankfull that I have fiberglass experience because it needed some love. I will post some pics next week.
