The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Nice find Damian. I'd be very interested in getting one of these if you manage to find out a make and or model.

Cheers

No, I do not have one as I just discovered it yesterday.
And yes.... the one I've been looking at on FeePay, was just snagged. :?

There are however 3 versions of the same calculator and all will work.
So, another should come along.

The only difference I can see is that the bottom picture has larger horizontal gaps between the buttons... But that may just be my laser zapped eyes. :p

I think that's an effect caused by little raised white rims around each key. The first photo seems to have larger vertical gaps, but it's just the direction from which the photos were taken.

In reality I expect all the gaps are equal. :)

Obviously on the right lines, but don't you think the one you've found definitely has a more rectangular layout, where the original is square? :?
I'd say it was the right manufacturer (who?), so some of there other products will probably have the correct one.

The angle which you are viewing are different. One has the top back while the other has the right side back. Is it possible the use the keys but made a custome layout?

Thanks!

Greg

That's doubtful Greg. I had a conversation with Terry Red who made the Tracker props a few years back and from what he told me about the short amount of time he had to make them (about 2 or 3 days IIRC) they would probably have just cut out the calculator membrane keypad and slapped it on.

Yes I know what you are saying, but the perspective in those pics isn't enough to make that much difference.
They would have to be at a very accute angle to make the spaces inbetween the keys change that much.
I'm certain they are two different keypad layouts.
Very close but not quite. :?

So any chance someones going to spill the beans on what claculator this is from at any stage?

Or is this the ' If I mention what it is everyone will be looking for one and the price will shoot up' malarky raising it's ugly head again?

Personally I've got no interest in getting one, but it would be nice to know for reference what its from. Sure I'm not the only one here with the same thought.

The spaces...

As I mentioned, there are three versions of the same calculator.
2 of them are horizontal layouts... one is a vertical layout.

The photo above shows a version that has a horizontal layout.
The buttons on these have slightly larger gaps from side to side,
and smaller gaps, from top to bottom.

The vetical layout has larger (top/ bottom) gaps and smaller
(side to side) gaps, and I believe is THEE version.
(assuming that the angle of the original MT photo is not playing tricks)

The horizontal layout (shown above) is slightly spaced different, but I believe should work just as well.

I'll spill the beans, but first let me organize my photos and info and I'll be back.

I found it while searching through photos of vintage calculators and after finding what it was, checked eBay for one and there just happend to be one up for auction.

I ended up snoozing out on that one, but like I said, I don't have one yet and it is in fact one of the last pieces I need for my "all found items" Tracker.

So if you see my name as a bidder...

.. Well, ya' know.

These are the Casio Solar powered, card sized calculators.
Models SL-8, SL-80 and SL-85.
Introduced in the very early eighties.

The SL-8:
Appears to be the most rare. Not a lot of good photos out there.

The SL-80:
Same as shown in the post above.

The SL-85:
The One?

Keep in mind these things are tiny.
Perfect size for the Matchbox transformer.

It had always bugged me about that keypad, I always knew it looked familiar... now I know why...
I used to have one of those calculators!! Long since thrown in the bin....

No doubt they will cost a small fortune now on e-Bay...

The one on eBay US at the moment seems overpriced at $29, so maybe it's started already. However, the bidders seem to buy similar things so it's possible 'we' just happen to be interested in an already sought-after model?

It'd be shame to see the Eumig and Derwent Interconnect land-rushes happen again, but it might be inevitable. All part of the hobby, I guess.

The one on ebay is not accurate...

Image

The "plus" button is too long for a MT keypad.

Watch yourselves guys.

Honestly I think I may have had one of those 25 some odd years ago; I can remember the cool folding wallet. I also remember the keypad eventually developing cracks... and going in the garbage.

Who knew?
