The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Mostly the replicas of the real world stuff like the weapons and such. But do you go furthur?? Seen a mess hall tray like that on the Sulaco...do you snatch it up? Bishop's flashlight, do you get one and use it as your primary light source? I once saw one of those spinning-whirling things like those that sat on the mess hall tables...only thing that kept me from getting one was my wife. :) People thought I was a little overboard when I wouldn't stop about finding Bishop's light. I thought it was so cool though! So what about you?

Yes, this was inspired by the "Recognize this?" thread. :)

I think you collect stuff until you feel like wow I have way too much stuff, then you purge and go buy something from a different field. That's how it seems to work here, a cycle to it. If you allow me to go all "college and theroretical" on you here :D

You buy aliens stuff, collect, get too much, sell and purge your stuff, wow star wars looks cool now, collect, get too much, etc.

It's a cycle that the sooner you identify with, the better you'll have of not getting thrown out by your wife :D

Just my 2 cents,

When the wife threatens divorce...

Or hits you with a frying pan.

All kidding (?) aside, there does come a point when it becomes an obsession, or addiction. When you are scrounging to pay the bills because you bought that $300.00 do-dad last month, or you have to spend them same on a new wall unit to display all your stuff, it may be time to take a step back.

Money is probably the bottom line. Is it necessary to have the brand of cigarettes that Kane or Brett smoked, or some other really minuscule item that only hardcore aliens fans would recognize? It's up to the individual.

My wife used to ask me why I need all this stuff (crap)? My answer would be "because it makes me happy", even if I am the only one who knows what it is. This "happiness" has to be balanced very carefully with real life though.;)

Isn't the "big wheel" a staple in Cameron films? I might be imagining this, but did I see one in The Terminator, when Arnold shoots the first Sarah Conner?

I have played with the thought to buy one of those 3 wheeled kid's bikes and transform it into a Weyland Yutani one for when Aiden (my 5 months old son) is old enough to endanger the neighbourhood on a bike :D

Is still think it would be a lovely prop to own, anybody know the make and model of that bike they used?

Cheers,

Marc

I have the flatware used in Alien and the flatware that was used in 2001 and ST Voyager as well as the thermos and glass cups from ST TNG.
Also have the calculator on the doors of the lockers on the Sulaco.

Accept for the glass cups, all the others I had, then noticed them in the shows and movies later.

True is stranger then fiction.

Right about over there :)

I would try to get as much as I could. Cuz' I would know. I already get the rolling eyes from the wife as it is, but my son thinks it cool when I can show him something on the screen and right in front of him.

Just got my Jungle boots in on Wednesday. He looked very cute in them - he is 4.

That makes sense, it's pastel blue and purple underneath.

Take a look at Terminator 2 where Captain Patrick's police car pulls up in the suburbs- a kid rides one of these past, and I'm sure it's the same model.

I would buy almost anything that is a replica of/or same model as what was used in the films (depending on cost in scale to how major the item is).

I like to think anything I buy, I could have a practical use for; either for using in a fan film or using for real (e.g. bishop torch- any ideas where? :D )

I draw the line at anything that just sits there for the sake of looking nice- I don't collect small scale model kits or ornaments such as the palisades range. However, I would buy one that I thought looked particularly cool. And I'd like to buy a 1/6th scale marine- things like this I just want on the 'cool factor'- which I suppose can't be classified in any way. It's just whatever you have a taste for...

Karyn says I can have anything I want :D

........................except a Facehugger! :(

So I have to draw the line at facehuggers!!

By the way, ever since I got my 'Bishop Torch', I use it all the time, those things are so handy!! :)

At one time I went nuts. If it was in ALIENS I had to own it. The gyroscopes on the mess tables: had them. Flashlights: had them. Watches: Had them. Action figures: had them. And if I could not find an exact replica, I bought the next best thing. Then I sold about 95% of it. Bought my Terry armor and never looked back. I am bit more conservative in what I buy now. Space, money and kids have curtailed my collection :)

I had a piece of yardage of camouflage pattern in my living room draped over my couch and a thought came to me: Hmmm. Get the whole couch re-done in u.s.c.m. fabric, and then pillow cases, and then down comforter cover ....

To answer your question...
I spend about a year on each costume. I research, create prototypes, and then build. After Halloween it gets a display next to last years costume. Eventually I plan to have a room like Bruce Wayne. FYI, you guys probably lose me when Troy comes out in May:P You can see the start of my Greek Armor at
f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph.../my_photos

The skirt goes with the gladiator costume.

In my opinion, too far has to do with money. I would not pay $500 for something to be exactly right when $20 at the hardware store can get me close enough for my own needs. My armor and PR are close enough. If someone at d-con tells me it does not look authentic I will inform them that it is made from heavy gage ABS plastic not resin and they don't call me joeranger because I worked for the park service. I have spent a lot more time on ALiens because my kids love playing with the alien door in the basement.

Man, where do I start? I always loved the Alien and Predator movies, but it was not until the release of the Aliens vs. Predator 2 PC game, that my passion for collectables developed. I guess you could say that playing the game almost everyday since its release submerged me into a SciFi fantasy that could only be filled with that of tangible AvP items surrounding me in the real world.

My collection started with the Palisades Alien Mini bust. After purchasing that bust my collection went supernova and now almost completely fills the main bedroom.

My wife is really great. I can’t think of any chick off-hand that would allow their man to keep a life sized Predator, Alien Head, Face Hugger, Chestburster, and every possible mini bust and McFarland figure displayed inside the sacred chamber …

So where do I draw the line? I can’t really say for sure. I still envision having a completed full body Alien Resurrection Drone and Marine in full armor etc., inside the living room.

If I were a rich man, I would no doubt have a display like that one seen inside the original Batman movie at Bruce Wayne’s mansion. My passion goes that deep.

Hm, first I just want to build a PR and that`s it - not more.
In the first time I saw this board I thought : MAN, these guys are totally weird ! They collect each small bit from the movie.

After my PR was finished I was infiltrated from the Aliens prop virus from this board. My target today: build so much props from real parts as possible.

It`s hard to say where I have to set the line. I set the line in the past but I corrected the position more than once.

I`m not a big model kit freak, so I think I`ll set the line behind lifesize models. Biggest project I can imagine is a 1:1 powerloader, no space for an APC, sorry.

just do it !

I think this takes a great deal of guts! I was the same way in the mid-90's. I had money to burn, and spent it without abandon. I would take a grand or two to a convention and be willing to spend every cent of it! If one thing cost $500.00- no problem! I mostly collected Star Trek stuff back then. If they were making airsoft PRs back then, I probably would have owned three!

Then I got married:) and changed jobs:( .

Today I am very careful about what I spend my money on, and Steve is exactly right: wife, kids, and a house quickly running out of room will do that.

I'm not yet at the point of selling off my collection, but I can see myself doing it one day. However if I win the lottery, I'm gonna have that "Bruce Wayne" toy room everyone describes!:D

It's lucky (or unlucky) that I don't have either of my pug dogs anymore; otherwise, you guys may see them dressed up in camo as Marine K-9 units ready to fight the liddle aliens.:D

I guess collecting, like everything else, is left up to the individual as to where to draw the line. And I thought as much, I just wanted to hear what you all thought. :)

I used to collect ANYTHING Aliens related. I once joked with Guardian Matsuo that I would buy a rock if someone were to piant ALIENS on the side of it. But I think recently I have adjusted the focus of my collecting. MOst of the toys I had have been sold,, and that cash has gone to purchase things for my prop collection. And my list of items I want for my collection has grown shorter because of this. I actually have it written down what I want so I don't go nust and "impulse buy". I am mostly interested in rounding out my collection of ALIENS replicas. My list falls short of having anything of the alien itself on it besides the facehugger and chestbuster....but only because anything of the Alien warrior itself has proven either too expensive, or to hard to get into this country without risking damage to the piece. There are a few things that Golden Armor has created, but I tend to shy away from that for reasong I won't go into. And items from Alien 3 and Alien: Res. just don't light my fire. And I have managed to keep from buying things like the dinner tray I found that was the same as that on the Sulaco, of the spinning table piece (although I couldn't help myself 3 years ago from buying one of those drinking birds like that seen on the Nostromo. (regretable). What helps keep my focus is to also consider how much money buying that next trinket will take out of my wallet...and weather or not that could be used to purchase something to further my collection. Then it's easy. :)
