The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

 Post subject: UK Sci-fi Weekend - June 17th & 18th 2006!!
PostPosted: Mon Jan 23, 2006 11:13 pm
On June 17th-18th 2006 the National Space Centre in Leicester are hosting a Sci-fi weekend. The event comprises S.F. exhibitions (including the HHACA Aliens exhibition in what will be it's largest, most comprehensive form to date!), dealers, hopefully guest signings (to be confirmed at time of writing), a showing of 'Alien' and 'Aliens' on the big screen and a party on Saturday night - and more!

There's also a live action 'Alien War' style experience planned called 'Alien Encounter' in the centre's 'Challenger Suite'.

As many of you know Geordi TK 1837, Quothcorvus, Simon and I recently met with Malika, the Centres communications manager.

I'd like to report that the meeting went very well and I now have a very positive view that the sci-fi weekend will be a great success; the venue is marvellous and the Challenger Suite couldn't be better for the live-action experience, it could almost be purpose built for it!

I should point out that my personal responsibility is solely to provide the HHACA exhibition, and to consult on the live-action experience if necessary (I have over 20 years experience in entertainment technical production and also worked on the London 'Alien War' experience).

YOUR responsibility is to come along and help make the weekend a great one!! :)

2006 is the 20th anniversary of 'Aliens' so we all owe it to ourselves to celebrate that, and I can't think of a better opportunity to do so.

I'll let Simon and Malika post further details about the event in general and I'll keep you posted about the HHACA exhibition side of things.

I hope you can all be there, I remember what a great time we all had meeting up at the LF&CC in November 2004 - let's try and top that! :)

Harry.

Hello guys...

Firstly let me introduce myself, some of us may have met and any that want to invite me for holidays on the other side of "the pond", I am always happy to meet new people!

For those who look at the name on the post and think "who the hell is the chick with the weird name" I am the Communications Manager at the National Space Centre and so responsible for the Sci-fi Weekend on 17 & 18 June.

I was lucky enough to meet Harry and Marc on Saturday and I hope alleviate any fears that may have begun about the event.

So here's the real deal... it is a Sci-fi event that will have a big slant towards Aliens (tying into the Anniversary). Harry's exhibition will sit in the HUB of the galleries and be supported by other partner organisations we are talking to at the moment.

The Alien Encounter does sound like being an amazing visitor experience, but I will leave it to the experts to explain (I will pull the ovary card on this one Harry!)

The National Space Centre is the host of the event and as such will be responsible for all parties involved, budgets, marketing and the overall management.

Now I am not pulling rank or wanting to play games, I cannot do this event without the support of the experts and fans, but I want us to all work together to make a fantastic visitor event for fans and families alike.

Just so you understand a bit more to help you make a decision if you want to get involved...

:) The National Space Centre is a not-for-profit charity that will look to cover its costs on the event.
:) All extra monies will go to charity (partners to decide)
:) There is a budget to cover basic costs for those exhibiting.
:) We promise to look after those working on the event (changing and relaxation room, lunch, refreshment etc)
:) We are planning a huge party on the Saturday night for all those working on the event with FREE beer (please tell me that sells it to you!)

I am happy to chat to anybody and if there's a pint involved the chat can go on for hours! So let me know your thoughts, ideas, questions etc...

Malika Andress
Communications Manager
National Space Centre, Leicester

First off a big 'Hi' to Malika. *waves*

As to the event, it all sounds fantastic.

The 'Alien' universe is why we are all on this little rock of the internet, it's great to see that its twentieth anniversary is going to be celebrated on both sides of the pond.

Dragoncon in the States and the National Space Centre event here in Blighty.

Unfortunately due to my work I can't really dedicate the time to help out with the 'Alien Encounter'.

Getting to rehearsals, etc, would be problematic and I don't want to let people down, but barring any unforseen circumstances I intend to be there for the weekend and if needed, will help out where I can.

Great to hear any profits will go to charity, that always gets my vote.

A cinema showing Aliens, I'm in!!! :)

(Can we all boo loudly when Burke appears and cheer like crazy when Jonesy the cat makes his star entrance!)

Don't forget guys the twentieth anniversary year only comes once, lets celebrate it in style. :D

Look forward to seeing updates over the coming months.

Cheers,

Andy.

Having talked to Harry and Malika at length I feel a lot happier about the prospects for this event. I’ve sort assurances that no one wishing to attend will be bared from the event and hopefully we can now put any previous misunderstands behind us and move on. I’m sure Malika would be happy to talk to anyone privately who needed any further reassurance.

From what I’ve heard this promises to be a tremendous occasion and knowing Malika’s enthusiasm I’m sure that working between us we can make this a cracking event to top them all.

Don't let Malika fool you! She may work for the Company, but she's really an OK gal.

;)

Welcome aboard the Legacy, and thanks for all your assistance to date, Malika! I'm confident now that this event will go well, and any drycleaners local to the venue will be doing a roaring trade in pants that weekend.

You never know where irrelevant "crap" can lead too...

So time to pick your brains guys, God knows I have little enough left, so I need a bit of your expertise on this one...

So far I have had no luck with agents to secure star signings.

Danny John-Jules is the only possible from a Sci-fi background and from Aliens I haven't heard back from Al Matthews and Jenette Goldstein yet (but I only sent out the invite a couple of days ago, so fingers crossed).

Is it worth trying IAN WYHTE - AVP (Ian played all the Predators)?

Do you have any other suggestions / contacts?

Do you think that people coming over for LFCC (1-2 July) might be worth checking if they are in the UK in advance of the event????

This and many more questions keep me awake at nights, so be prepared!

Malika (the Alien Queen Apparently!)

Ok, Ok, on a serious note. On the guest list front, considering the majority of the Alien movies were made in the UK, although we are aiming at more of a 20th Ani of Aliens, its worth considering actors from Alien 3 too (be honest is there ever going to be a 20th ani of Alien3 or Res?)

Well on that note, heres some suggestions

Charles Dance (aka Clemens, Alien3)
Ralph Brown (aka Aaron/85, Alien3) also starred in Phantom Menace
Daniel Webb (aka Morse, Alien3)
Paul McGann (aka Golick, Alien3) Plus you get the Who fans as well for that one

Mac McDonald (aka Al Simpson, Colony Officer, Aliens) was also the Captain of Red Dwarf

Well those are just a few ideas, enjoy

Already had a NO from the agents of Charles Dance and Paul McGann, not that I think the agents even asked them "I don't think it is something my client would be interested in!" - put on a nose in the air attitude and a pole up the backside and you have the idea.

But HUGE thanks for the others, invites have been sent and I will follow up with a phone call when I get back from London... bit busy working with Ewan McGregor at the moment of some narration work for the National Space Centre - now does that sound pretentious enough!! Can the girl name drop or what??? hehehe

Hey, FUN irrelevant crap is always good!

Re: non-Aliens signings etc.
Is Norman Lovett available?
Or, indeed, any of the rest of the Red Dwarf cast/crew.

How about ( On a slight tangent ) some of the Simon Pegg etc. "Spaced" collective?
Nick Frost is doing "Hyperdrive" at the moment ( for better or for worse :S ) and while Pegg himself might be a bit hard to get hold of, since he went all hollywood and is now better than all of us, it might be possible to get some of the lesser mortals from those shows.
;)

I've done Norman Lovett... no not in that way 3,2,1 and you're back in the room!

He was one of the ones with the "ever so helpful" agents.

Craig Charles and Robert "big boys toys" Llewellyn have the same agent and she won't run the idea past them until I can confirm I am happy to pay £5k per day, which is a bit over what I normally pay.

The rest of the Red Dwarf cast I am still in the dark about, but I will chase agents - preferably with a pack of large savage dogs and a very big gun!

Nick Frost and Simon Pegg... I will get on the case ASAP.

Thanks guys xx

If you get any 'NO' replies back from any of the Aliens cast let me know.

I know Ricco, Jenette and Al were all interested and wanted details.

Just wanted to chip my pennies worth in..:)

I'd love to help out unfortunately coming from Scotland it's a bit far to come for the rehersals. I would like to come down early and help you set up tear down afterwards. If that's OK.

On a related note since it's going to be a few days down there.. Is there a list of local B&B's /places to crash?

I'm sure Malika will comment more on this

The NSC has a relationship with the local Holiday Inn,
I think a discount is going to be aranged
so I think the plan is all to stay there, that is except Harry from what he was saying last weekend
I think it was somthing about mixing with the riff raff
or was it he would be closer the a cheese factory

Change it, cancel it, burn down the centre... whatever it takes!

I am now planning my diary for the next six months and I seem to be spending a lot of time organising the party on the Saturday night - it will be one of those events you will tell your grandchildren about!

As to accommodation, the Holiday Inn offer us a discounted rate of £45 per room for two people including breakfast.

I will start sorting this out nearer the time, but I can also look at B&B's in Leicester if people want me to get anything cheaper (but £22.50 per person ain't too bad is it?)

Oh, I should have said, actually...
You mentioning a party after the event made me realise I never said, but I'm a DJ.
If I can be of use to you in that capacity ( Mainly rock / alternative stuff... Ranging from Blink 182 to Slayer :) ) then please don't hesitate to let me know.
