The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Post subject: Shoulder Lamp Light question for tech Gurus
PostPosted: Sun Apr 01, 2007 8:39 pm
Building my shoulder lamp.

I have all the ORIGINAL parts except the arm.

Question, for electronic gurus,

What light technology should I go with?

Halogen,Xenon,Incandescent,LED....?????

I don't have to use the original light bulb.

I want something really bright, lasts long, and doesn't

generate a lot of heat.

Need some good advice, a lot of junk info on the web.

Thanks.

Second on the LED. All three of the other are Incandescent (halogen and Xenon are the type of gas in the bulb, but it's still your normal incandescent technology).

If you want something, REALLY bright you need to go for LumaLED. It WILL need heatsinking though, so it'll need to be attached to the metal case but they are very bright.

Anyone attempted to run with a spotlight style shoulder lamp?

Ya know, the 30,000 candle powered one that causes blindness if you look directly at it?

That'll be awesome :D

It's also called Luxeon.

Online:

www.luxeonstar.com/

www.thecustomsabershop.co...onics.aspx

Though it does take a bit of electronics knowledge to wire one. The easiest way would be to use a driver such as the ones at LuxeonStar:

Thanks WG!

Man, which one should I get?

Wondering if the driver would be okay in the alarm box.

I don't think it will be a problem. Soldering is no biggy for

me, I used to be an alarm tech for many years.

This is a fun project for me, and my lamp will practically

blind tony if he looks at it long enough.

The driver will be fine mounted in the alarm box, you only need to connect the positive and negative leads to the Lumiled Luxeon LED.

Although there will be pleanty of space in the can to mount both if you choose.

The LEDs are current driven so they need some form of driver however this can be a very simple circuit consisting of a battery and a current limiting resitor.
There's not really any need to buy an expensive driver.

Here's a blue lambertian mounted on an ordinary heatsink.
3 size references to keep everyone happy: 10p, Quarter Dollar and I think you recognise the third.

Sorry for the poor focus - crappy phone camera.

And here's the back showing the driver curcuit. A simple voltage regulator and resistor. This runs brightly and happily from a 9v PP3 battery.

Yeah, if you're an electronics tech, then you can go the resistor route, be happy to help you calculate the one you need, or look up LED Resistor Calculator on google. LuxeonStar should have all the data sheets.

I recomended the driver purely on the theory that mnoble2 didn't have electronics experience.
