Oops! Spelling corrected!

Not bad considering I've had about ten hours sleep in the last seven days!

Harry.

I was going to point that out too- but then thought it might be some subtle joke that went over my head

I managed to find a hobby shop that had some Brown Bess so I cleaned them out of it (4 tins worth).

I also got some paint chips from Walmart to see if I could match it to a standard colour.

When I got the tins home, I noticed about an inch of dust on them. Stirring them was brutal. The paint had completely separated and was this brown chunk of goo stuck to the bottom of the tin. As I stirred it I thought, ok it's brown... no wait, it's grey... no, it's green... This was one odd colour.

After stirring it for as long as I cared to, I painted a small amount onto a white paint chip. It is very muddy dark brown in appearance (this was my first time seeing it in person). The Field Drab I mentioned earlier is much too light compared to this. Lolly's XF-51 is close, but looks a little too grey, this should be more on the brown side.

I think I saw a really close match in the store (I think it was a German brown colour- RLN something), I'll check again on the weekend.

As for the paint chips from Walmart, two that are close are: Olive Brown (20YY 12/163), and Turkish Brown (20YY 09/175). The Turkish Brown is the closer of the two, but is still slightly too light compared to BB.

Hope this helps.

Yeah - that's Bess Brown alright. ;)

Problem is it's not a popular colour so it tends to stay in the racks for a long time. Should I be stocking up on this colour? I can lay my hands on a dozen or so tomorrow.

Personally I would just buy a couple of tins or even just one.

The purpose being to get a sample of the colour that you can have matched at Lowe's, or find a close match on your own.

Humbrol paints aren't the easiest to work with and Brown Bess is particularly fussy. The consistency is either too thick or too thin, sometimes looks matt, and sometimes looks semi-gloss (within the same paint stroke). It also doesn't like to be handled afterward (you get oily prints all over your paint job).

It may be that I'm having a lot of trouble with it because it is my first time using it, but I would rather find a close match with a brand I'm used to like Testors.

I found that colour I mentioned earlier. It's Panzer Schokoladenbraun 1943 (F 2096). Must be British.

I'm going to do up some comparison paints chips like Jesse did to see how close it is (I have high hopes on this one!).:D

From what it looks like, the Panzer Sch. is too dark. Close but no cigar. I did see one last colour that might work- Raw Umber. My last hope.:(

Couldn't someone just take a Humbrol Brown Bess paint chip to HomeDepot or Lowes and get it computer color matched? They may even be able to tell you the exact break down of paint ratios, so anyone can walk into a similar hardware/paint supply store, and get the identical color... except in a form that's much easier to use than Humbrol BB.

Just a thought.

Car paint suppliers can usually custom match a paint sample and include a matting agent so they don't dry glossy. The car paint (cellulose or acylic) will be harder wearing that the Humbrol enamel too. With Humbrol the matt colours appear darker if they get buffed by handling so it's tricky matching from photos.

Having said that, I've just collected 13 of the little tins of Humbrol.
