As promised, here's a little comarison between our much hated....er, beloved Humbrol 170 Bess Brown and some close alternatives. Credit for finding the Aervoe 999 Earth Brown goes to Mat of Hi-Impact. Until I did this comparo I didn't even realise how close it was. He did pretty good for being partially color-blind, don't you think? ;) The Tamiya XF51 was found by Mel (lollypopuk).

WOW!

Thats a really cool comparison shot Jesse. Great effort there.

If I was going to choose between them tho, I'd say Mel's XF-51 has the edge. She obviously did some homework to get that close, but even the A999 would look cool.

Again, thanks for this awesome comparison.

Really ?

To be honest I thought the Aervoe 999 Earth Brown had the edge but that could just be my monitor settings.

LOL! I spent 5 minutes in a model shop comparing a little tin of Bess Brown with as many other tins as possible.

It's not like I had it analysed by a chemist or anything :D

Aervoe 999 Earth Brown looks the closest to me - but it's not a brand I'm familiar with and is apparently only available in the US.

That Aervoe 999 paint must only be available in the US- I haven't seen it here in Canada.:(

A close match I found was Testors Model Masters Field Drab FS 30118. A little more brown than Testors Olive Drab, and not as dark as Tamiya XF51.

Maybe it is my monitor, but I can't help but see a better blend with XF-51. But really, both are very good. I guess its what you prefer.. A little more brown or dark green. :)

You can have my Brown Bess when you forcibly remove it from my seized, malfunctioning, grasping appendage……beeep…bzzzt…

I mixed up a gallon of the stuff and have yet to use it on a gun…LOL
Painted some ammo crates though.

Great compendium Jess, just the sort of thing a community like this was made for!

No - you're right Tim - seeing them that close it does look like XF-51 is pretty damn close. :)

I've changed my mind - A999 is dead, Long live XF-51! :)

The only problem with that is that HBB & A999 look even closer with the naked eye than XF51 does. I'll do some more shots with the 3 colors centered (there may be some color shift towards the edge), and maybe pick up some of the paint Sarge mentioned to add to the mix ;)

Looking at it on my monitor the A999 is closer but a bit lighter.
The XF-51 seems to be a bit on the grey side.

BTW: Nice job Jesse.

I'm sure your correct about the A999 matching HBB closer with the naked eye Jesse. Even knowing XF-51 looks kind grey in the pic, it actually looks green under artificial light and brownish under the sun's rays.. Just take another look at my previous post and it clearly shows a difference in color..

This is difficult - HBB looks completely different under different lighting conditions.

I still have 1 10ml tin left of HBB.....

Post subject:  Re: Bess Brown and Alternatives

BTW, if you Google for "aervoe earth brown", without the quotations, you can find lots of suppliers for it. It's more an industrial paint, and not normally associated with model making. This is why most of you probably never heard of it, like I hadn't until Mat found it :) .

And yes, HBB can look very different under different lighting conditions, even without the varying white balance levels of whatever camera is involved taking the picture :) Ah, the joys of digital photography ;)

One other thing that I should mention is that Aervoe Earth Brown comes in a regular, full size spray can for under $5USD :D

Sounds great!!:D

The Testors Field Drab might appear a little too light when you look at a bottle of it (don't think it comes in spray form), but it dries a little darker.

I'd also like to add SAC bomber tan, and Earth brown by Testors. The earth brown is especially nice.

Codes availabe upon demand.

Thanks for doing all that Jesse!!

Testors isn't in the UK either?!? Holy cow! What's normally used on plastic models then? Humbrol & Tamiya? Yikes...

Humbrol, Tamiya, Revell are the most common - but bear in mind I live on an Island with a population of 65,000, 120k from the UK mainland - I'm sure a big-city model shop would have more choice! :D

Post subject:  Re: Bess Brown and Alternatives

That's true. I keep forgetting about that ;) Revell, eh? We have Revell kits here in the U.S. but not Revell paints. Come to think about it, there was a product shot of some paints & assorted stuff on a research vessel kit from Revell Germany AG that I bought recently. I'll have to have a closer look at that when I get home from work tonight ;)

Revell paints are fine - better than Humbrol, I really like the Tamiya though. :D

I found some Airfix paints in he model shop I go to, they were really old, but nice, I think Airfix stopped making paints a long time ago or actually became Humbrol - I'm not sure.

Pals,

Posts like this are why this board just freakin' rules.

Jesse, thanks SO much for putting this together! I'm getting to that point where I'm going to be painting my shrouds. Being in the U.S. and needing to use a spray can (no airbrush thingies), I wasn't even aware of anything other than Testors making a color close to Brown Bess. Now it looks like I have a choice... for me either Testors Olive Drab or this new revelation of Aervoe 999 Earth Brown. Of course the NEW problem... now it looks like I have a choice. ;)

Thanks again to Jesse and all the posters.

Took a couple of pictures of my helmet minicam today. This is what Testors Field Drab FS 30118 looks like:

Interior lighting: 75W floodlights, with flash.

Same lighting, no flash.

Taken with a Hewlett Packard Photosmart 620 digital camera.

The more I look at it, the more I like it. (the no flash pic is close- but it looks a little darker to the naked eye). I've looked into SAC bomber tan-it looks slightly lighter than the field drab above. Tamiya XF-51 is really dark compared to field drab.

Hope this helps.:)
