The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I do believe we can chalk this up as FOUND. Finding a '76 bracket with two screws instead of one is going to prove challenging. The brake handle is easy to find :)

Again, great job!

Thanks guys. I'm glad I could contribute something useful to this forum. Up until this time I don't think I really had contributed anything that would help anyone other than myself (since I'm the only one stupid enough to do what I'm doing).

Thanks guys...it just gives me something to wear to conventions when my smartgun is not allowed or when I'm too tired to lug around a big, heavy gun around. Plus it's Terry English...how can I not want a set of his armor?

Well, a couple of additional acquisitions have arrived and have made my rainy day a little better...

Chef directed me to an auction for a Beyerdynamic M560 microphone, which I jumped all over given I needed a second one to complete my second headset (as I posted before, I have a spare headset from an Opus mic). Well, after I won the auction and contacted the seller, he confirmed something exciting:

Image

He sent a second one for parts (I bought a functional one)...both are fully intact! So now I have one for a second smartcam headset and the other will be used with my Terry English helmet! So pumped! Thank you, Chef!

Also, this showed up:

Image

Image

A Marushin Smith & Wesson M39 replica. This thing is beautiful and fires blanks. As you can see, it's got the accurate ivory handgrips, exactly like Vasquez's. Now I'm in the mood to pin a xenomorph to the wall with my foot and then joyfully unload a few rounds into its face.

Oh, and I don't think I posted these before:

Image

Thanks Corsasri!

Here's a post to show you guys more of the level of detail I am going to in order to get my smartgun as close to screen-accurate as possible.

Here is a comparison photo of the original Vasquez smartgun pre-filming, and what I thought was the 'restored' gun that Prop Store sold a few years ago...

EDIT: this may not actually be the restored smartgun that the Prop Store sold...if so, my mistake...but hopefully still interesting to show how easy it is to overlook all of the details! - Thanks Quarax for the correction. I can say that at the very least, the rear grip has been changed on the one the Prop Store sold.

Image

Grey Arrow: rear motorcycle/ATV clutch perch and lever have been completely changed
Red Arrow: the gap between the actual MG42 and the rear "block" (rectangular plate) was not maintained
Black Arrow: the rod under the gun now has a different ringed pattern to it
Yellow Arrow: the ammo drum top cover is a completely new build and different shape
Purple Arrow: the mounting bracket for the MG42 rear sight is completely removed now
Green Arrow: the underlying steadicam counter-balance (cylinder-shaped piece) is now gone
Blue Arrow: the welded front grip mount has been completely changed
Turquoise Arrow: the muzzle flash-hider has been replaced (it looks like they casted the original but didn't do a great job)

Most people probably just glance at the prop and don't realize all of the subtle details, which is fine...I realize not everyone is as obsessive as I am. The only time it drives me crazy is when people, who clearly have no idea what the prop actually looks like, comment on considerably inaccurate smartguns with statements like 'nailed it!' etc. I know it shouldn't bother me, but the props I'm referring to are not the work of anyone associated with this forum, so I figured I'd vent (sorry). Ok, I feel better getting that off my chest!

All I can say is "WOW". You describe yourself as "Obsessive" and that is just the kind of twistedness I can't help but admire. Those last few acquisitions are awesome and jealousy levels are off the charts at this point. Great work as always

You are doing a real service to this community man. I don't believe this level of research has ever been done on the SmartGun before and it is fabulous. The "refurbished" prop (above) at least looks better than the Ecto-1 they try to pass off as original, but it isn't fair to muddy the waters for folks who are trying to research this stuff. When there are so few good photos of the prop from filming it is inevitable people will look to places like Prop Store and assume they are seeing it in pristine form.

What can I say, absolute great work.

If and when I decide to build a smart gun, this will be one of main threads to visit for reference.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks guys...but just wait until you see what else I have been studying extensively. I think I'll have to make an entirely new thread with just a cut-and-dry layout of how to build the smartgun once I have it all completed. Then again, I don't think anyone cares to go to the level of detail I am getting into, so maybe I won't waste time adding another thread just for that.

Hey, please DO share every teensy tiny detail you unearthed regarding the smartgun. Enough people will thank you for just that - I for one will.

good find. Looks like on the restored version there is also a gap now between the shroud covering the trigger and the block behind it. might be a perspective thing though.

Isn't that one a replica? I could be wrong, but the picture seems to come from this post on the RPF: http://www.therpf.com/f9/steadi-cam-mou ... ens-65480/

The one the Prop Store has on their site looks different (but is still inaccurate in some places): http://www.propstore.com/cms/the-prop-s ... /smartgun/

Also, speaking of the Prop Store: http://www.propstore.com/product/aliens ... es-jacket/

I could have sworn I got the photo I compared to the Vasquez gun from the Prop Store website, but maybe I didn't! The one on the link you sent me appears to have a few abnormalities too...hmmm.

Yup... You carry on being your anally retentive self...

If you're not doing it, who will!

Someone has to be the "Custodian of the Information".

Don't let anyone ever tell you you're not doing the right thing by seeking out that minute detail.
Even if only one other person thanks you for your input, you've done the right thing.

I was listening to Jeanette's interview on "I Was There Too" (fantastic PodCast by the way) and she talked about the photos in her locker:

Attachment:

vaz3.JPG [ 135.33 KiB | Viewed 39596 times ]

She specifically stated that the man was meant to be Vasquez's brother! This of course is a semi-famous portrait by Richard Avedon:

Attachment:
avedon3.jpg
avedon3.jpg [ 11.63 KiB | Viewed 39596 times ]

She also talks a bit about the woman with the gun, saying it was a Sandinista fighter and that she'd clipped it from a magazine. I'm still trying to track that one down, but as you're into all things Vasquez I thought I'd share what I have so far!

That is indeed awesome! I can't say that I'd be sticking the same photos in a locker if I had one though...haha.

Well...as with everything else, I continue to find duplicate parts, and no, my spare is NOT for sale...

Image

Now onto more M56 stuff. I have, as always, continued to examine every detail I can from the very few photographs that are out there. One of the things I've taken a look at is the IR sight box. There are a lot of details that you can't see well, but there are some other details I've been focused on, and of course I want to have an accurate box made.

Image

Image

I also used to think that the steadicam arm attaches to a bolt that drills through the MG42 shroud, but I was wrong. This has been discussed before (props to sidewinder for looking at this well before me). Of course, I had to make some diagrams to use towards having the parts made (which will hopefully be soon)...

Yeah...this gun is so awesome and it's really a shame we get to see so little of it in action.
