doh, i didnt clock the rocker! but the m51 and the m65 are very simular jackets, only real differences are the m51 is more 'tailored', i still personally think the pics of gorman look more like a m51 than a m65 though! but both styles are easily found on ebay and are about the same price
easiest way to tell the difference is to find a good image of the cuffs, the 2 jackets' cuffs differ vastly

Everywhere I looked the M51 was a lot more expensive, like over $100! On amazon I could get a 65 for about...65. :P

For what it's worth:
There a several "versions" of the M-56 jacket in the market (mine came without epaulets).
Depending on the picture/scene you find the "Sulaco" patch or the name tape on Gorman's jacket.

It would be great if someone could clarify:
What belt is actually used in the movie?
What other props did Gorman had apart from the H&K and the grenade?

I'm sending some emails trying to track down replicas of the Racal Minilite RA-150 headset that he uses. This thing has been used in so many movies I don't know why it isn't easier to get cheaper replicas...so frustrating.

Quick request that is pretty related to this topic,

I saw a "behind the scenes/making of" video a while back that had quick shots of the continuity Polaroids of many characters when discussing the topic of characters costumes.

One of them in the scrolling images was Gorman loaded out with a full pistol belt and what looked like a LEFT HANDED holster for his VP 70 on his right hip OVER his (m51/m65/m56/whatever it is) Jacket. It never clicked in my head that he was a lefty until I saw that pic.

Now I'm trying to find that pic online, but no luck. Does anyone have it, know where to get it, even have a screen grab that can confirm the belt/holster placement of Gorman when he enters the complex? Im trying to get a complete picture of how Gorman was 'loaded out'.

Just skimmed through to that scene, this is the best shot I could find, He definitely doesn't have anything on his left hip as seen when he first steps out of the APC. There would have been a perfect chance to tell after this image, when he stands upright and turns around slowly inside the complex, but his arms were down by his sides the whole time.

Found the video on youtube and just cropped a screen grab.

I'd say this is a decent idea of a "Combat Zone" Gorman (and any other EU officer for costuming purposes)?

I no longer believe the holster is left handed though. From how high the pistol grip is Im guessing its just turned around so he can grab it easier.

That would be a damn easy costume to reproduce as long as the coat stays on!!

That -is- a nice shot of his outfit with what appears to be a M36 style pistol belt. I replicated a "Lieutenant" look for one of my NecronomiCon/Halloween outfits and I've been using a generic 2" OD strap with an added buckle as I did not notice those details (guess I'll be swapping that out). My base coat is a M51.

If replicated to screen-specs, Gorman is wearing a uniform shirt underneath his coat (in addition to the white undershirt). It is the same one he is wearing on the Sulaco hanger and after he finally recovers from his concussion. To me it looks like a modified P56 shirt. I have yet to do that for mine.

See the two collars?

NecronomiCon in Providence by any chance?

I just meant there's a fair amount of discussion of about whether Gorman's uniform was custom made, but his coat, hat and belt are all available off the shelf.

Necronomicon in St. Petersburg, Florida I'm afraid. It was a letdown to be honest. I was hoping to also debut my steampunk outfit to a bigger crowd.

I agree with you completely. In my case I'm hesitant to alter my M51...I think it looks sharp as-is though I -may- try to add the stitching to the collar.

Hope you didnt already buy that M36 belt! Sorry to spread bad intel, but it would appear that continuity polaroid I posted earlier was a pretty early version of the outfit.

As this screen grab shows, the belt he actually wore on screen is VERY similar to the fastex belts all the marines wore. Your first belt is probably fine.

So is the hat a 107 or the 106 ? Confused

I believe it is the 106, I have one I found on ebay for under $5 :)

Have not. I noticed that his belt in the movie has a solid appearance. I've since swapped out the original material for something much thicker. It is a pretty neat glimpse to see what it could have been. Thanks!

Whichever one you recommended for me was correct, so you're the official expert on that.

Haha, someone else recommended it before me I'm sure!

No expert here, but thanks! haha

Unrelated, but I never noticed the "GRRRRR" on the trigger guard of Drake's smartgun. That's hilarious.

Post subject:  Re: Injured Gorman costume

So I am attempting a "gorman-style" officer build again (sold off my first attempt to Cooper last year) and its going OK. I can't for the life of me find the OG-507 pants in my size that I had the first round...

Anyways I figured I would pass along some new (new to me and this particular thread) reference photos and info.

First up, a much better version of the photo I posted earlier in this thread

(keep in mind that belt was never used on screen. The shaggy haired Gorman in this polaroids would have a few tweaks including addition of name tape to the jacket)

Next a pretty dang good upper body shot from filming of the "Im coming in" scene.

Clearly visibile notes (many already covered in this thread):
-Black Zipper
-"Sheen" to jacket
-Same belt all the other marines used (minus the straps of course)
-Holster with flap folded back and handle forward (he was left handed)
-Name IS on jacket
-My personal belief is it doesn't look like the collar is as tall as an unmodified jacket. My theory is the removal of the jackets zipper/hood system involved the outright cutting the collar short at the hood compartments zipper line. It was then sealed back up and reinforced in it's slightly shorter, zipper-less state. (or so goes my theory)

Next would be his belt. I had read other threads say that Gorman had a "woven" belt on his Service Cs. After grabbing this shot, I think he may have worn the same belt for both his Service Cs and his ODs. Basket weave-imprinted "Garrison Belts" are popular with many police forces and go about $20 online.

Other notes
*As mentioned in a previous thread, the OG-106 and OG-507 hats BOTH work perfectly and are functionally identical

*My first attempt at this I used a vintage M65 jacket. This time I am using a new "Austrian" version of the jacket (Cheaper to find in my size and "new" so many times better condition). The differences are below:
-The Austrian jacket has a more defined sheen (it is new, afterall)
-The Austiran jacket has NO velcro!!! The euro-version of this jacket uses old school buttons instead of velcro.
-Plastic (Austrian) vs. metal (vintage) zipper
-Austrian jacket has NO zip-out liner unlike the vintage one that can be lightened by removing the liner. The Austrian one is fairly heavy so that may be a deal breaker for some.
-The epualettes are easier to remove on the vintage jacket. As I recall, they are sewn in a way that they can be cut off right in line with the seam. The Austrian jacket epualette is sewn in such a way that completely removing it compromises the integrity of the sleeve sewing. As such a little nub must remain (hard to describe, i'll try to remember to get a picture).

*DO NOT use/order a 'rothco' replica sight-unseen!!! I think their are 2 versions of replicas out there and at least one of them has top pockets that are TOO SMALL to fit both the Sulaco AND rocker patch. The real vintage and Austrian versions have appropriately sized pockets.

So finally came back to this costume and I've made some progress. After doing a test fit, I realized the shirt is a different olive drab then the pants. So back to the army surplus to find a shirt that is the same color as the pants and hat. Then it's time for the jacket.

Maybe it's my eyes, but is Gorman's uniform shirt a lighter color than Gorman's pants?

From this pic?

download/file.php?id=10000&mode=view

It's possible, however I think it might have something to do with it being a continuity Polaroid. The lighting and poor quality of the Polaroid camera may be making the pants look darker.

Regardless, personally I wouldn't buy pants that were darker than the shirt on purpose if I was putting a "Combat" Gorman uniform together. :delta:

Yeah. I too thought it was a bad Polaroid and then I saw this picture. So now I'll have to watch the blu ray again and look to see if my eyes are playing tricks on me.
