Currently deciding to work on a second marine costume and i've like the idea of doing an injured Gorman costume. Already got the VP 70 and grenades. Thanks to Moosh, i know Gorman wears an OG 107 hat. What im needing clarification on is what type of BDUs Gorman wears. Does he wear a flight suit or OD BDUs? also, does anyone have a screen shot of the bandoleer he has so i have a ball park idea of how many grenades he's got in it?

As you can see here on Harry Harris' site, Gorman's BDU is not a typical uniform. I actually have never seen anything like it (not that I've looked hard). But it sure isn't common. I really hope somebody can find it and ID what exactly it is.
It also could very well have been made for the film.

looks like a mechanic's BDU from the 60' / 70's modified to the BDU pattern the troops wore

This is probably the case considering the camouflage BDUs, and Gorman's Service C shirt were custom made as well.

You are better to start with the OG 107 shirt and pants as a base. Manderian the collar, changed the pocket flaps, add a "yoke" line in the back across the shoulders and replace section of the flap that has the button holes and replace the buttons with velcro. (or you can made a flap cover to go over that strip where the button holes are and still use the buttons).

The pants I didn't notice any mods to.

Just posting in here to see if anyone actually has more experience with this costume, as it's the one I'm going to try and assemble.

What the heck does "Manderian the collar" mean?

Also, be patient with me. I've never tried to assemble or alter any items for any type of costume ever in my entire life.

You know those little oranges! The Manderian Chinese style of collar. It has also been called a "Priest's" collar and "Prussian" collar. Basically its a stand-up collar that either has a small space (typically 1" or less) between the two ends. They can be curved which is more typical of the Maderian style or a 90 degree angle ends.

In this case the collar stands about 1.5" tall and has a rounded 90 degree end to the collar and the open not spaced, but also not connected together.

Does that help?

Wow, that's a badass how-to. Thanks! I thought I'd have to take it to a tailor and confuse the hell out of them, but I guess I could just tell them more explicitly what I need them to sew now, as I am sure as hell not going to do it myself.

But still, my other question is on the table. Has anyone actually successfully replicated this Gorman costume, and what shirt was it that they were successful with?

MOD:

Damnit! He's also got another jacket that he's wearing over his olive drab shirt. (i'm shuffling through Polaroids on the Anthology disc right now. This jacket's got a zipper. Also, I believe the LT insignia pin on his hat is a curved shoulder one, but colored black.

I believe the jacket he wears in the APC and when coming inside was identified in the past. You are correct in that he wears a subdued, curved rank bar sideways on his hat.

Thanks for confirming that because sometimes it looks like a regular flat collar bar, other times I feel like it's curved. It does look bigger like the shoulder ones.

The thing is, how the hell do you get it in black, or how do you MAKE it black, because there's no uniform requiring subdued shoulder bars, they're only worn in service/dress uniforms.

This jacket...damnit. I was hoping all I'd have to do was modify a shirt and get the pants/boots! But, I ordered the OG-106 hat today...so I'm on the road to commitment here. Gotta get the patches too.

Gorman's jacket is a standard military M-65 field jacket:

I don't believe any modifications were done to it.

Get the bar. Spray paint it with flat black outdoor paint. I had to do that to one of my skill badges in NCO school. Cadre was none the wiser. So far, it's held up.

i believe you can get them in black now. i have a pair of black MSGT pins i got from a friend in the marines, so i would assume they make the LT bars in black now

Also, does Gorman wear the same boots as everyone else, AND what is the specific type of belt he's wearing around his waist WITHOUT the jacket? Whatever he has on over it with the VP-70 looks easy enough to track down.

I'm fairly certain he wears the same black boots that Ferro and Spunkmeyer wear, as opposed to the green ones most of the others wear.

Actually the entire collar has been modified. The zipper and hood unit has been removed, the collar has been reinforced to stand up as a 2-3" tall manderian collar.

I was looking at pictures today and noticed the zipper was not on his collar. Also, his main jacket zipper is black and looks to be plastic, while M-65 jackets available online seem to have silver metal ones.

Also looks like the two shoulder flap things (I don't know the official name of these) have at least been removed?

What would they have done to remove the hood and reinforce the collar?

Epaulettes. Yeah, they've been removed as well.

I've also noticed that the jacket Hope is wearing has a little shine to it in some of the polaroid shots. The M-65s I'm finding online just look like they're out of Taxi Driver.

I think with the epaulets removed, an M-65 is nearly the same thing, save for the zipper for the hood on the collar. There's a picture of one on amazon with a guy wearing it, without the epaulets and with the patches placed on it you could photoshop William Hope's head in there and it looks right.

Also, this guy didn't get the memo that the USCM nametape isn't on Gorman's jacket, and he's also missing the rocker patch underneath the sulaco one.
