Post subject:  A Study in Pulse Rifle Grips - REVISED AGAIN!

edit - july 22nd - Got some photos in from Sarge today, so the study just keeps on expanding. Very cool.

--------------------------------------------------------
EDIT - july 20th - thanks to some input from Alex I have revised the photo study to be accurate to what the GEM pulse rifle looks like. I also added two more photos to it, with thanks to everyone who's let me use photos! Thanks guys.

--------------------------------------------------------
Over the years I have noticed that no two pulse rifle makers (unless one is recasting the other) seem to have the exact grips.

The grips seem to vary wildly in some cases. I've always thought this was interesting (maybe I'm alone in that interest) and have been mulling over doing this little grip study for a long time.

I've worked on Spats, which has a comfortable grip, the Wilco, which I think is very comfortable, and the Icons, which I don't much care for.

I prefer the wider, fuller grips, such as the Gem and the MIM have. Now, both of these models are reputed to be recastings of SD pulse rifle, but don't seem to have the same grips. At least not in the comparison pics I have for reference.

The Rcroberts ebay classic (as I call it) also has a wide grip. Everything on that resin monster is wide though :)

I really like the look of Matt's new grip too.

Anyway, hope you guys enjoy my little "chart" here culled from years of saving reference photos of many prop makers work.

First of all, I'm not that interested in Pulse Rifles, but that's not what I wanted to say... DAMN well-done guide!!! Props to you for taking the time... I'm impressed even though I'm not, as I said, that interested in them :-)

This is purely for fun and fans sake, not claiming any expertise here.;)

if it serves like modern grips, it's to keep your hand in place, ie a griped handle for better grip as you fire

I think he means the little nub at the bottom (not notch).

Retaining screw, yes?

The problem is that I have too many damn hobbies!!

And Tony do you mean the screw on the bottom of the grip, or the wilco grip with the thumb groove?

Tom - thank you (Derek please note how to be polite by Tom's example!) hahaha;)

Just the little notch on the bottom of the grip.
Its not touching any part of the hand, its just there.

The RC has it and a few others including the screen used ones.

Tony, what you're seeing there is the head of the rear grip screw. It sticks out like this because for the film they used the thompson wood grips, and machined away the shape of the grips to look like spas grips, and after that the screw head stuck out.

Here are some pics for clarification. (and Derek, before you make a comment, this took me all of 10 minutes to compile and setup in illustrator! PUNK! :P

Noeland the PR with the "wood grips unknown origin" is the one from the Technical Manual; allegedly assembled from mostly original PR parts by Bapty several years after Aliens.

It was a comission for the owner of 'Fiction & Fantasy Models' back in the 90s.

No idea why the grip was left unfinished though.

Joerg,
Thank you for pointing that out, I will revise and repost, I mistakenly used the wrong photo there! Sincerest apologies, thank you for not flaming me!

Harry,
Thank you for that info. I had no idea! I thought it was just a fan made PR.

Nice work Noeland, it's always interesting to see comparisons of the take on different parts by different makers.

Thank you, and thank you for the pics you sent over. Had a rough couple of days. My dog is sick, and we may have to put her down.

This really breaks my heart because she's so smart and so strong, but she has siezures, and yesterday she had 9 of them, 3 of them after we left her for observation at the vets office. The meds don't seem to be helping her.

We're bringing her home today in the hopes they will stop, but if they don't, well, we'll have to let her go.

But, in any case, I want her to stop having siezures because they knock the crap out of her. She has the full on grand maul thrash around violent type.

So, it was nice to get back on the computer and concentrate on this for a little while :)

Thought this was quite a handy reference for anyone buying an unknown origin PR.

I stopped this falling off the board. Can it be placed in the Archives?
