My gorgeous Shawn Morgan flame thrower kit! :)

There's some (but not much) cleaning up to do, and I plan to either make a few minor alterations or to do some major ones (like replacing the resin M203 grenade launcher handguard section with an original one) but I'll be sure to post some in-progress photos like I did with my Motion Tracker.

Neo,

Actually I didn't purchase it, It was a gift.

That said you should know by now that we don't discuss the sale of replicas in public here on the board anyway.

It is nice indeed, and it's certainly the most accurate.

I'll post some comparison shots with an original flamer too when I finish the kit.

Wow, that looks absolutely fantatsic.

Congratulations to Shawn on a job very well done, and to Harry for a very fine acquisition.

The detail looks very sharp, and compares very favourably with the images I have seen, must be the best replica out there.

Is it just me or does the carry handle look as if it would be a weak point? (Due to it's original design and translation into resin, nothing to do with the workmanship! :) )

Look forward to seeing the finished article Harry! :)

Actually Andy I forgot to mention this in my post. It's cleverly been cast in a different, much stronger resin. While I can't say for sure at this stage I'm fairly sure that it would be capable of supporting the whole thing.

The fuel bottle is hollow-cast by the way. I plan to fill it with expanding foam to give it strength without adding that much weight.

The handle would need some serious pinning and glueing but I think it might hold.

Cool, I should have realised someone of Shawn's calibre would have taken this into account. :)

So whens the next Harris Towers USMC Weapon Expo then????

You just need the Sentry, (cue Os and Stephan) and your all set! :D

Take care,

Andy

That's a phenomenal sculpt!!! :D

I just wish it was cast in black resin or something close to bess brown/OD green. Nevertheless, simply amazing!!! :)

Whoever's in contact with Shawn, perhaps you could suggest ( ;) )he look into casting some of his M-13 Sniper rifles:

Alex,

LOL! I can see it now! Of course I know how much the amount I mixed up earlier expands to (which I think was a little over what I need), and my next trail will be in a plastic bottle that's roughly the same size as the Flamer fuel bottle.

Hopefully I won't go too much over the amount I need. If it does overflow the stuff stays 'soft' enough that it should just pour out of the top of the bottle before it sets.

That's good advice Mike, thanks. I hadn't thought of that. :)

I could make a hole the same size as the neck of the tank in the bottom of a plastic bag, and put it over the tank upside down - kind of like a cape - and tape it on.

Harry.

Post subject:  Re: My latest Aliens prop replica!

Just a small update:

Although I've not started work on the kit as I said earlier I plan to fill the hollow-cast fuel bottle with 2 part expanding foam to give it strength without adding that much weight.

To follow on from that I ordered some foam which arrived yesterday.

While I was at it I bought some resin too as the fuel bottle is a little thin in places (that's not a slight on Shawn's moulding techniques, it's just something that can happen with hollow cast items).

I'm planning just to mix a little resin and pour it into the fuel bottle and keep it moving until it's set. This should add maybe a millimetre or two of extra thickness to the walls of the bottle. When that's set it'll be filled with expanding foam to give it some extra strength.

I had a little try out of the foam earlier on. It's fun! I mixed up about a centimetre of each part in one of those plastic mixing cups and left it to do it's thing. It's fascinating to watch (if you like that sort of thing!) as it expands to about 25 times it's original volume.

If anyone has any expanding-foam tips or tricks do let me know. Thanks!

Harry.

Here's one. Make sure you build a funnel and/or mask the outside of the tank really well, as the chances are some of the foam will spill over, and it's a nasty job getting it off once it's on a surface you wanted to keep nice. :D

Nice flamer Birdie!

Question: If the foam expands to approximately 25 times its original size, how do you know how much you will need to use!?!! I'm imaging Harry getting pushed out the front door of his house from all the excess! But seriously, at what point do you say "that's enough"?

I almost covered my screen in coffee reading this!

I can just picture Harry's neighbours thinking, "Look at that Harris fellow; another cheese experiment gone wrong!"

I must say those are fantastic flamers! And I would like to see that scope rifle as a kit as well!
