The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

With regards to the clamp - on the bottom of the barrel shroud there are ridges for the bipod - my clamp is a 'C' section piece of sheet metal that attaches as per the photos on the previous page - then bends around the barrel shroud, sits inside on of the bipod ridges and butts up to the barrel release door.

Its my belief that the inside of the clamp has a nut/tapped steel piece that snugly fits up between the clamp and the gun - so there should be zero movement of the clamp, as its snugly held in by the ridge and barrel door underneath and the bolt through the sight above, and the bolt behind the clamp making it all solid.

I don't mean to impose, but if you find the time would you be willing to check on a measurement from the arm?

Specifically I am curious to know the length of one of the covers on the arm segments (Distance from A to B)

Hey buddy, when I actually have the arm (it was JUST completed believe it or not), I will be happy to take more photos and any measurements you want.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to post real quick that Septic and I have been discussing the brake lever - the one that I have posted is indeed a little too long, which he proposed, and I'm glad he did, because I would've been real mad when I finally had everything to put together if I was just realizing it the week before Dragon Con. I brushed the lever aside after figuring out the perch because I was too exhausted to care, but even Matsuo stated that the lever seemed too long. I didn't really fully believe the lever was too long until I got my foam grips recently and lined it all up just a few minutes ago for Septic. I don't have time to post pics of this yet, but the lever search continues - just like everything else so far, I'm confident we'll succeed! The perch is still dead on...no matter how many times I recheck, it passes my inspection...I am still 110% convinced we've got that part ID'd.

Lots of work underway! Hopefully some big updates after I get back from California in a few weeks - I will hopefully be meeting the man who designed the steadicam arms when I am out there.

I've been doing some crappy extrapolations based on the assumption that the foam motorbike grip is the standard length of 125mm.

My [and I think Adam's too] Magura lever - measuring from the centre of the lever mounting bolt to the tip of the ball - is 175mm long.
This over-hangs the end of the grip by about 40mm and so, going off the ref pics, clearly isn't right.

Faking up a pivot arc ->

the correct lever clearly ends before the foam grips rear-most ridge.

Using that idea and the the generic short lever mock-up I started with, I estimate that the correct lever is between 120mm-125mm long (as measured from the centre of mount bolt to tip of ball).

So, as to which Magura short lever is the right one, that remains to be found ...

This is my favorite build thread here and in the RPF forum. Amazing work, Adam!! Great to see people draw inspiration from this build, myself included.

Thanks man!

Tomorrow morning I leave for California to check on my Ecto-1 project. Yesterday I was given the perfect bit of good news to get me excited for my venture...

Image

My Vasquez steadicam arm is 100% complete and 100% authentic, built from every single same period-specific part as in the movie (no reproduction parts). Nobody will be able to look at it and tell this, but it means so much to me. I should be meeting the man who built the arms next Wednesday, and I'm excited to do so.

Hey everyone,

It's been a real busy time at work so I apologize for not having much to post to keep you all updated...I'm entering the 'oh crap, Dragon Con is 2 and a half months away' phase of the project...things need to start picking up!

Well, things now can...

Image

My Vasquez arm is finally in my hands. I was very, very stressed when it was in shipment because I don't really trust FedEx. Funny enough, the day that I knew it was meant to be delivered, I contacted FedEx and asked them to hold it at the local shipping center so that I could pick it up rather than let them screw up and deliver it to the wrong address (it's happened to me before). Mind you, I was not home at the time and instead was seeing patients in the cancer/surgical unit of my hospital. They said that was no problem and that I should call back later that day to find out when I could pick it up. So, I called back...and found out that it had been delivered to my front door.

Needless to say, I FREAKED OUT...a package containing something that expensive sitting on the front porch?!? I was running out to my car to speed home immediately to get it (I had just finished seeing patients) and thought I'd call my dad (the arm was delivered to his house). He answered the phone and said he had received the package...PHEW! What a relief...it is so beautiful. I LOVE IT! The arm will be used to pull some measurements to make an accurate attachment mechanism for the gun.

Chef, being the swell gentleman that he is, sent me this photo as well:

My BDU's and some other goodies are on the way! So excited! This is starting to come to fruition!

Awesome pics! In fact, that photo does help me with something I am masterminding as we speak!

Oh, and I figured I'd show you all something that arrived today:

Image

It works, it's in great shape, and it's the reason I got into Aliens when I was 9 years old! I'm not removing the shrink wrap until I actually have time to play it.

Lots of photos will be coming of the gun progress soon!
