The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Indeed- if you don't have your card, all is not lost.

But waiting to pick up your badge WITH your card takes awhile (at least an hour)... I can only imagine how long it would take without your card. If you don't have it, be sure to have photo ID and at least one other piece of ID.

I know the party begins as soon as Spat steps off the plane, but are there any activities that occur friday morning?
OR is Friday the only day its safe to sleep until the con starts?

Another question:

Is the badge collection desk open for the duration of the convention? So could I delay collecting my badge until is needed it? Would that mean a shorter queue?

Short answer- no; waiting will not produce a shorter queue. In fact it will be the complete opposite.

Get it Thursday as soon as registration is open. Otherwise you face lines that can be as much as 4 hours long. The peak day is Saturday when lines will be the longest. However you need your badge to participate in the parade Saturday morning so you'll need to grab it sometime on Friday anyway. The earlier you get it the better.

D-Con is growing exponentially each year with numbers becoming larger than the convention is able to handle. To be honest it's getting too big for its own good. When I first went in 2003, I booked my room at the Marriott in late June or early July. Now rooms are sold out 11 months in advance. The DC staff are showing the stress of greater numbers without added staff or space (their nerves are frayed and they have no hesitation in showing it). Every year they become more Nazi-like in exerting their "authority".

I still love going though- and only a severe lack of funds would ever prevent me from attending.

I've actually never had to wait very long to get my badge. I've had my purple/green/yellow/pink/etc card each time, I always arrive on Friday morning, and in 2006, I had to get my badge transferred from someone else who I'd bought the ticket from. Still never waited more than about 20 minutes.

Luck is with me.

Oh man, I forgot all about the Guide!
Whoever's making the Guide to DragonCon for the Brits this year, make sure it says "DON'T PANIC!" in large, friendly letters on the cover.

I don't know if anyone can answer this... maybe Spat?

If you don't have a pink slip at all... but are going to have like a "professional" or "guest" pass, when can that be picked up?

I know out in SDCC we can get it earlier and in a different line... (if you think the D*Con lines are bad... SDCC is... just... *shudders*) so I'm happy for that, but I've no experience with a different type of pass at D*Con.

There's mention of a separate line for 'VIP' passes on the D*Con "What's new for 2009" page on their web site.

Edit:
Quote:
This year we are happy to announce that Eternals will have their own line in VIP badge pickup which will also be housed in the Sheraton.

I don't mean to sound argumentative, but I'm not too sure that this is the same thing as what Derek needs info on-

The "Eternal Pass" is basically a lifetime membership. Tentacle Chris and his wife Angie have these. Last year They had a seperate line to go in to pick up their badges (yes- even though they have lifetime memberships they still have to pick up their badges every year).

So like I said might not be the same thing- might want to double check (as said- maybe Spat would know) before waiting in that line.

I just took it that as there was a separate section for 'VIP' pickups, maybe that's where the professional/guest pickups will be too?

Spat will hopefully fill us in once he reads this. :)

Yeah, there are separate lines for everything. There's an Eternal area (which usually is the same room for Guest and other special passes). When you get to Registration, there will be signs telling you which lines or areas are for what.

But all the registrations really open at the same time. So even if you have a guest pass, you still have to wait until Thursday to get it.
