The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Sorry if I missed this. I know that it was going to be posted. I couldn't find anything using search except staying hydrated at the parade several hours earlier. I saw last years sweep on youtube. I am a noob and this will be my first year. What exactly entails a sweep? I believe last years was after the parade. Will it still be this year with the dinner on Sat? Sorry just eager.

Thank!

Greg

Im sure the sweep will be after the parade again....after the people pour back in. We usually meet up at start point and walk and talk it through before it happens...just stick with us, and we'll break you in right

Aw, man. I was planning on showering and napping after the parade, assuming I survive it.

I fully expect to hear "Medic! Man down! Man down!!" in reference to me.

You'll have time, don't worry! He means we start getting ready for it after the parade... by getting ready, I mean bouncing around looking at our watches, thinking "is it time yet?! is it time yet?!"

Last year the sweep started around 2PM, with a rehearsal walkthrough beforehand. We split up into two "teams" then, and this year there will be close to twice as many people involved. I wouldn't be surprised to see us split up even more, maybe even across multiple locations, just due to the sheer number of people we'll have, but I'm sure everyone who wants to be will be included. :)

Ok I will need time to change out of my Dress Blues have a quick shower and back into battledress after we have finished taking all the pictures we plan on taking after the parade. Not to mention time for lunch: food is important (no joke here).

So after we finish taking pics I'm looking at at least a couple of hours before I'll be ready for the sweep.

2pm for the rehersal would work for me. There's no hurry right?

As to how the sweep itself works- basically we are roleplaying the platoon going into the hive. We are looking for survivors (ignoring the fact we are surrounded by the actual con-goers).

Last year we partoled the upper levels of the Marriott finishing on the lowest floor (using the various staircase/escalators). It is a low and slow patrol- heads down, crouching, slowly advancing through the "colony". The sweep usually ends when we make contact with one or several Xenomorphs/Predators (the more the merrier  ).

Unfortunately the worst part of the sweep has become the ending- since we are not actually carrying blank firing guns (and have no intention to if anyone's interested  ) the end is pretty anti-climatic. There is no firefight. No spectacular battle. But we still ham it up pretty good with the Xenos causing serious casualties and the group having to fall back (like when all hell breaks loose in the hive sequence).

Then we have tea and crumpetes.

Well, as long as I have enough time for you to drag my withered, burning corpse off the road, revive me, and send me off for shower detail and R&R, I should be ready to rock after a few hours.

A suggestion if I may.
Is it neccessary to have all those involved do the test run of the sweep ?
I think it kinda gives away, what we are up to a little early.
Other thoughts that I have had is to have the aliens and preds further ahead in the lead.
No Dom not like Benny Hill, but more of a fox and hound hunt.
Or at the end of the sweep we stop searching and the Alien/preds converge on us.
Or heck, make it a comedy and start off all menacing and end it in a game of rock/paper/scissors.
Again, just a few thoughts.

Since we will have so many numbers, and assuming we can all behave correctly, I dont see why we couldnt take it outside of the hotel this year...as in the mall!!! We did that for the first sweep we had..and the mall crowd CHEERED US at the end....we actually went through, looking under tables, kicking chairs, and interacting with the "colonists". Now that was the sweep to remember :)

And NO, the police wont mind as long as you dont act stupid...they know its DC and that we carry replica guns...they might even want to hold a PR from time to time. Plus, I know Security at the Hyatt pretty well.

"Check under those chairs"!

Given the amount of people involved this year, I think maybe 3 or maybe even 4 squads will be necessary.

Any volunteers to film?

We did a quick no weapon walkthrough beforehand and I don't think people gave us a second glance.

I am so amped for this! Heck if you haven't done this before... you will want to do this more than once at D*con.

Yeah, Sean. I thought about that when reading Kevin's post.

Maybe this year we can all retreat under the cover of our one working weapon.

Didn't we all revert to big 9 year old kids last year and start making gun noises with our mouths?

Funny enough...

That's how Dom took out a chestburster at the Polaris sweep this year.

"BOOM!!"

If we all had sound systems for our guns I would be so happy I'd shed a tear...

I've tried looking into a simple sound piece for my PIG, but either the sound itself is too childish sounding, or wouldn't be loud enough given the noise level of the convention itself.

That's why I said "Might", hehe. The fx board is fully installed and working perfectly; the question is whether or not I'm going to be able to scratch-build a battery powered amplifier to power the speaker in time. The amp is going to go under my chestplate and connect to the gun through the cable harness and DV-9 battery. Assuming I can finish it in time, hehe.

I'm going to be working on that in my free time while I'm up here in Jacksonville for the next two weeks on my yearly reserves training. I'll keep everyone posted on how it works out.

That's the one bad thing about compact speakers. Small speaker equals small sound. I do like my FX PR and am waiting for a couple things to FX my MT
