1100 rooms sold out in 6 hours?

Please understand I'm not directing this at you Dom,

But a Bro on the Brotherhood of the Bat (Liam) spoke to the hotel three times.

First time Liam speaks to a guy- who tells him the hotel is sold out.

Second time he speaks to a woman- Liam explains to her what he was told the first time, and goes on to say that he is a returning customer and does have a room at the Sheraton, but would rather stay at the Marriott.

The woman was curious about this as she didn't think the entire hotel was sold out, and even doubted that the first guy said that. Apparently it would be nearly impossible for 1100 rooms to sell out in less than 24hrs. It would be the talk of the office with everyone buzzing about such a massive booking in such a short period. She says she would call Liam back... and doesn't.

So Liam calls back and asks for the same woman. She gets on the phone and her demeanor is completely different than the first call. Where she was polite and sincere the first time, THIS time she was stand-offish, and very abruptly tells Liam that the hotel is sold out without any explanation.

There's something not right going on. Rumour is that someone booked all the available rooms under one name- thereby selling out the hotel without any intention of keeping the reservations.

As far as I can tell what's happening is that a lot of people are reserving huge blocks for other people. I know a friend who reserved something like ten rooms... but she's holding them for other people.

Indeed. I booked seven rooms for the UKCM, but they are now 93% occupied.

I checked the website the other day and it was going to let me book a room at regular rates. I didn't recall the code to try it.

This would seem to show they definitely have rooms. I would bet more will be released to the DCon rate in the coming months.

Missed last year, planing on this year, the marriott sold out in like 2 days so i cant get a room there, no room booked no tickets bought....

Well my brothers, I probably won't be able to make DragonCon. My finances are difficult to say the least. I used my credit card to not only pay for last year, but to just stay afloat. At $11,400 and no more. Working to keep my house...times are tough my friends. I've got almost enough to pay this year's prop taxes, gotta sell a few more props. Can't afford the mortgage if taxes are included. Have a good loan at 4.4%, but it's the principle. The house has dropped $185 k in under a year, taking all the money I got out of the divorce with it. Next year's tax returns should pay for that part of the property taxes, but the next half? Don't know.

I'll take the time off from work, in case a miracle happens, but for the forseeable future, don't know when I'll be returning to DCon.

yeah the economy sucks .that's part of the reason i booked everything , that way if everything goes to hell i only need a couple hundred to eat . and i would lose more not going,, but i am in the same boat , i have a matsu pr that will be up in the px as soon as i get it .

Yes, as if to reiterate what the other guys have already said, you will be
sorely missed next year, Rex. But you will have a great souvenir in the
Dcon 08 video where your presence is clearly felt!
And your 'Alien on a (sharp?) stick' in the march was truly memorable.

It seems the coming year will be tough for many as the inevitable
world wide recession takes hold.

Not sure what hotel though.

While Cherie is set to attend DC09......I'm not 100% yet.

When 2009 rolls around my wife and I will be in the market for a house and all depending on timing and finances etc.....I'm not sure if I'll be abe to make it.

I plan to keep my reservations however.....but right now I'm neither saving nor budgetting for the trip...house first!
