The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Is that when you go drinking in a bar that isn't within the D*Con hotels? ;)

I was talking about fighting maneuvers, combat formations, and hand signals. After all, most of the Marines here are infantry so why not use those skills when not under close quarters?

I should point out that D*Con is what you make of it. We're British so live in such a dark cloud of misery that we're rarely sober.

However, there are plenty of things to do at D*C while sober. We do a colony sweep, but it's quite informal and fun; and involves mostly shouting quotes from the film and teabagging, Xenomorph-style ... ;)

I understand the colony sweep, but I guess I can give out a link to what I am actually talking about.

This was what I meant.

13 years in the Army says I do. We've done exterior patrols before and we're never doing it again. Ever. Don't ever talk about it. In fact, nobody read this post.

But to answer your question a little more seriously, it has become impossible to do anything other than single file in most of the convention area. The crowd level would never permit anything closely similar to ack-ack, extended line, delta formation, diamond, nothing. The best you can hope for is all-round defense.

I see where you're coming from Marine... In 2006 when I was new to DCon, I tried to inject some military sauce into this gang of lunatics. It doesn't work. 75% of these folks are civvies... just marching in formation is a pure challenge. I heard excellent reports in last year's parade that the troops were able to keep a 5 meter distance from each other. A triumph!

If you're truly gung-ho, maybe there's room for you in Bravo Squad - Baldwin's Badasses.

FYI to spot the actual military folks on this forum, look for the Multi-Force Decoration in our ribbons.

This was what I meant.

I guess the short answer is that most of us are there as costumers out to have a fun time socializing in costume. We're generally not interested in being re-enactors (though some folks here do that sort of thing separate from USCM).

I guess I still have that infantryman mentality kicking in while I was in the Guard. The old habits stick and they die hard.

I quoted Dom's post just to reiterate Dom's excellent points...we've tried and its hard enough staying just 5 metres apart that early on a Saturday. Come on in, join the fun and we'll go from there!!

I to have never been asked to show a parade ribbon or badge for the parade, but we want to make sure we all have them because a) we want to make sure we're following the rules and b) they may be looking and just clearly see them....I mean they've been pink and white and we're all in dark armor and OD green flightsuits

Just to elaborate about passes and the parade-

In 2009 when I was in charge of our group for the parade, the DCon parade director Jan Price told us all in no uncertain terms that to participate in the parade you had to have a DCon membership.

This arose out of a rumour going around that you didn't need a membership pass to march in the parade. Ribbons alone do not cut it- you need a membership pass.

If I was to guess- it probably would have something to do with liability should anything happen during the parade.

In fact I just read the back of my 2009 pass and it does say that by being a membership pass holder you release Dragon Con from any liability to yourself or your property during the convention. To "armchair" this a little further- if you marched in the parade (without a pass) and were injured, I suppose you could sue DCon. So to prevent being sued they want everyone to have a pass and do not allow anyone to participate without one.

And for the record I've never been asked to produce my membership pass for the parade either- but I've always kept it clearly visible at all times so they really don't need to ask me.

I don't get asked to produce my driver's licence every time I drive either, but I always have it with me "just in case".

Unless if the third squad does the outdoor sweep. You never know if a Pred or three Preds might be hiding out.
