The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Well, that getting back in the parade sizzled out after 10 posts. I think it would be freakin' awesome & would make everyone else say, "Why didn't we think of that". What the hell, do you want to talk the talk or actually do it? I like to push the envelope & this idea is exactly what I like. I say we go do it. What are they going to do next year.....put us in the middle of the parade? Seriously, if you want to have fun & BE Colonial Marines, this here Marines is exactly something the bad asses from the U.S.S. Sulaco would do and make Goreman cringe. I'm in. Who else is in?

Although it's a damn funny idea, Mike... It might PO the powers that be. Wouldn't want to see us banned from the parade, huh?

To be honest, I like the idea - never for a moment took ourselves seriously, it'd just be a joke, not an arrogant 'we're better than you!' moment. In my mind, anyway.

BUT, it would ABSOLUTELY require clearing it with the organisers. It's too big an event to mess with it without warning. It's something that disrupts normal traffic along a sizable portion of downtown, and it doesn't just involve the D-Con organisers, it also involves people who live/work along those streets, and the civil authorities who have to sort it all out.
Let's not forget that if we do it, it'll mean a whole bunch of guys in military-looking garb with military-looking weapons double-timing back along the back streets - the ones that AREN'T designated parade territory and where people don't EXPECT to see armed folks. One freaked out little old lady and our communal ass (not to mention D-Con's) is in a sling.

On the other hand, if we talk to the parade organisers and they say yes, we're covered. :delta:

Of course, it doesn't quite fill the 'spontaneous fun' quota if we ask for permission, but the chances of being barred from the parade, from the con, or getting the whole con in trouble with the city are a bit too high if someone gets annoyed at us.

Should we go for it (and with the appropriate clearance, I'm in), I suggest we leave the flags behind. I think it'd look less pretentious if we just march with big goofy grins. :)

I agree. It's with the parade organizers blessing, or not at all.

Lets be realistic. Just imagine the scenario.....We are waking up at about 6-7am (depending on who is doing breakfast), after a looooong night of drinking and partying. Most of us are nearly comatose (including myself) at the start of the parade. Some of us will just oversleep and miss it completely. Then we march the route with all our gear in the 'HOTlanta' sun. When we make it to the end, we're making a beeline to the water bottle table to keep from passing out. Lets remember our poor suffering friends in 'Bug' suits! THEY ARE DYING at this point! I doubt that by the time we make it to the end, any of us will be willing to double time back to the stageing area, AND do it over again. Also, do we have enough time to make it back to the staging area to bring up the rear (at walking pace)? Or, do we have to 'double-time' down the back streets to make it to the rear? I'm sure there are a 'few' hard charging gung-ho marines that might be able to handle it, but to be honest, it would be a huge challenge for me and others. I'm certainly not going to object to anyone wanting to do it. What the hell, we're the USCM, go for it! But good luck on "Operation ReRun".

(Sorry, for playing devils advocate... Army officer habit of mission analysis, back-planning and logistical issues.) and the NCOs would agree.

Oh, don't apologise, Tony, you're absolutely! Discussing the op plan is one thing - but I suppose I should have put in as a caveat: "I'm in... as long as I'm not half dead, leaning on the flagpole for support..." :P It's easier for me in the class C, of course.

Well, I we do it, I'm in. I'm in shitty shape right now but am sure I can walk/shuffle to end of parade to have some more fun.

Here I go again with mission analysis...
According to the current parade roster, we have approx. 55 signed up. Judging by parades in the past, we usually suffer 'Prior Night Alcohol Overload' casualties. I calculate we'll lose approx. 5-15 Marines from the get go. It will be wishful thinking to assume we'll have 100% attendance. Then at the end of the parade, we'll probably suffer AT LEAST 50% attrition due to fatigue. The lack of sleep, hangover effects, and Hotlanta elements will have taken their toll. At best, you will have maybe, MAYBE 25 members that still have juice left to do it again.... and thats being optimistic. My realistic guess is maybe 20 (with or without color guard). If we are to make an impression, we have to try to have a number close to what we started with. I would hope about 40 members will be ready to run (or shuffle, or range walk) back to the staging area. Any fewer than 30 won't be worth it.
Assuming we have good numbers, and make it to the staging area, our next task is to find a D-con Parade Rep. We then should clear it with them, and just say we'd like to take up the rear and finish the parade. A DragonCon first! I think that since we are in good standing wth D-Con, they should have no problem with it. We should however, talk to someone at the start of the parade and give them a 'what if' scenario. They may tell us no friggin way and not to waste our time.

There is no doubt in my mind that Dom (and other gung-ho members) could do it at least 3 times! However, I'd be very surprised if we get most of us motivated to do it again. If we have good numbers at the end of the parade ready to go, count me in!

Oh, one more thing... Doing this stunt would certainly live up to elite military creedo... "FIRST IN, LAST OUT!" HOOORAH!!!

I can touch bases with Jan, our DCon parade rep if need be. I don't know that I'll be wanting to finagle through the crowd to the end of it, in Dress Blues, carrying a flag, but we'll see.

So, is the consensus to contact Jan? We do need to let them know. Can't just surprise them.

We've worked hard to represent the USCM, getting the honor of leading off the parade. Not the 501st, not any other group. Just the USCM. I don't want that to get fouled up.

Agreed Rex, you are the liaison, make it happen. We have faith in you. Just let her know this is a 'maybe' stunt. Its dependant on numbers at the end of the parade.

(PS: You and Joel need to troubleshoot that damn X-Box issue!) lol....

I'll talk to them about this. But, I'd like to know how many Marines are up for this.

Also, Where Are We Meeting? Usually it's the Fan Table, but with that still up in the air (Cpl Tony will do all he can to make it happen, but if 1 group gets ahead of him, and they run out...)

I'll put Meeting Location in First post-

Tony- I know, that damn xbox network has been frustrating!

Post in Off-Topic about it and maybe someone will help? :)

With Xbox Live problems it tends to be one of three things, mostly;

Router not compatible with Live (good ones say they work with it on their box manual and/or have a special setting to enable Live settings correctly),

Security/network traffic settings on router too strict. NAT not set to Open, etc.

Internet connection not fast/stable/noiseless enough.
